This year the F.H.S. Student Council along with the stu- dent governments of H.H.S., B.H.H.S., and W.H.H.S. was involved in a new activity, a benefit dance for the Greater Hazleton Diabetic Association. The dance was a success, and each school received a plaque for its participation in this fund-raising project. Dramatic Reading Three Freeland students partici- pated in the Seventeenth Annual Regional High School Interpretive Reading Festival that was held on Friday, April 30, at the Highacres Campus of the Pennsylvania State University. Participants in this con- test, sponsored by the Belles Lettres Society and the Penn State Student Government, were Leanne Bereznak, who read a selection in the poetry competition: Anita Herbener, who read in the drama competitiong and Alice Piazzi, who placed second in the prose category. This was the fourth year that Free- land students, under the direction of Mrs. Evelyn Shulman, have par- ticipated in this event and have won awards. A. Piazzi, A. Herbner, Mrs. Shulman Cadvisorj, L. Bereznak, Newspaper Correspondents The function of the news- paper correspondents is to write a weekly column for the Standard-Speaker. Each week two F.H.S. students, Alice Piazzi and Maureen Yori, under the direction of their new advisor, Miss Louise Lowery, were responsible for meeting a Monday deadline.
