' ' 4 ln four years we came along way from the nervous freshmen huddled under the old campus maples in the crisp air on our hrst moming of high school to the sed assured seniors whose throbbing hearts metered their steps as they mounted the stage for the last time as students of Freeland High School on graduation night. ln between, being an accomplishment conscious group. we struggled with soph- moric pride, survivetl trans-planting in our junior year, and came hurrying into our senior year, as all seniors are, pressed for time, trying to tie up this portion of our lives as a neat package ready for the worlds inspection. Our springtime has fuwlled its promise. Even now summer awaits laden with abundance, warm and golden. A season for the heighth and depth of lifes experience. We will live each moment with the hope that when our harvest is due, it will reveal a comucopia of jewels which cannot be measured monetoril y. I t is toward this goal that we must direct ourhearts, minds, and edorts. This book is a history of growth. lt is the chronicle of transformations. Yet it is only part of ourstory. What we do tomorrow will write the next chapters. Mark .l. Firley '75 ' 31,5 . if 7 ' A 450 'r' 'lp . fi , . .pl ' J ' 3 . ' fa. .fi ae.: I .1 I fditsjva, nl . '- A fr +P' J' in - uf- Q. Not only were they invariably willing to listen to us, but they were always ready to lend a helping hand in organizing our numerous class activities. Their friendship and thoughtfulness will never fade from our memories of high school days, and we hope our dedicating this yearbook to them will be an indication of our deep appreciation. 9 IZACULUH 9 ff X!!! A man is educated who knows how to make a tool ofeveryfaculty, how to open it, how to keep it sharp, and how to apply it to all practical purposes. H W Rppfhpr Administration and School Board The primary goal of education should be to pre- pare youth for life. Without a knowledge of life, no student can expect to graduate from high school and survive in a world that is constantly changing. Because our society is continuously fumishing us with challenging experiences, it is essential that our education prepares us to meet such challenges with vitality, knowledge, and strength. Despite scheduling problems, overcrowded conditions, and halt' sessions, the administrators and educators who have been involved in our education at Free- land High School have striven to serve the best interest ofthe students. Juniors, sophomores, and freshmen enthusiastically participated in all phases of student lU'e. The juniors successfully planned a Christmas candy sale, an Easter candy sale, and a wonderful prom for the Senior Class. The sophomores raised funds for their class by selling sweaters and sweat shirts,'and they achieved high school status when they received their class rings. Loaded down with books, the freshmen busily scurried about leaming the ups and downs of high school life. We, the class of 1975, wish the class of '78 the determination ofthe class of '77, the class of '7 7 the success ofthe class of '76 , and the class of '76 all the fun that we have had as seniors. This was the first year that the band performed at pep rallies, and their partici- pation proved to everyone that the band is always capable of giving student spirit a solid boost. Various fund-raising projects also kept the band busy. Because ofthe efforts ofthe F.H.S. Band Boosters, who sponsor an an- nual Tag Day, the entire band was able to at- tend Camp Greeley in the Poconos. Atten- dance at such band camps over the past three years shows that our band is eager to improve and willing to sacrilice the time and energy required to maintain a iirst-rate band. The band must also be commended on a number of other accomplishments. The float that the band entered in the homecoming parade won tirst prize. The band also participated in the activities at the Blooms- burg Fair and competed with several other bands at Myers High School. Tri-Hi Band, District Orchestra, and Regional Band also benefited from the talents of several F.H.S. bandsmen. ' t l I . ! ' Ecology Club What is the Freeland High School Ecology Club all about? It is more than two television films of its owng more than a feature story in American Youth magazineg more than a metal recycling pro- gram that is growing by almost three hundred percent a yearg more than commendations by the Environmental Protection Agency, the Ecology Council of America, and the Pennsylvania Depart- ment of Environmental Resourcesg more than one of the most advanced amateur photographic facili- ties in the areag it is more than the environmental field studies for Lulac and Syracuse University. It is more than sixty young men and women dedicated to the often unglamorous job of preserving a healthy environment. Under the direction of its advisor, Mr. Lutz, it is a way of getting things done, a way for its members to make a significant contribution to the twin causes of ecological protec- tion and environmental awareness. A great deal remains to be done, but the members of the Class of 1975 are justifiably pmud of their accomplishments. Above: Officers: J. Opert, B. Fairchild, M. Le Cercle Francais enjoyed ex- perimenting with all phases of French life this year. At the Annual F.H.S. Open House, the twelve members of this group created a truly French atmos- phere in room 15 by constructing a cafe, complete with canopy, French pastry, and candles in wine bottles. Throughout the year, the girls prepared various French dishes which delighted everyone who had the opportunity to taste them. Because of a growing decline of interest in foreign languages, these students also attended a forum which stressed the im- portance of language studies. These students are to be com- mended on their interest and their active participation in the French Club because without their fine example F.H.S. runs the risk of losing part of its excellent foreign language curriculum. Throughout the year, the club made and sampled dishes from the Spanish cuisine such as garlic soup and baked bananas. Several students of Spanish had the opportunity to see a play entitled La Celestina at King's College, and thirty-tive students, under the direction of Mrs. Evelyn Shulman, traveled to Bloomsburg State College to see a Spanish ballet. Every year all Spanish classes view a Spanish film, and this year was no exception. The senior mem- bers of the club, along with students from Hazleton High, also went to King's College where they attended an infor- mative forum on the study of foreign languages. 4 I .C ll its ea . .L A g a . Football Although this has only been our second year in league competition, our football team has shown considerable improvement. Special rec- ognition should be given to Ron Matisak, a senior halfback, who was the second leading scorer in the region with 60 points in 10 games, a remarkable fete since last year's team scored only a total of 41 points. Matisak's accomplish- ment shows the vast improvement the team has made in one year and the potential it has for making Freeland a respected foot- ball opponent. 72 X Coach Joe Matulevich .,s ' I N n, wr if S I Q f? if my fx 'Q 1:11 ' 355- OV xg Cf 8? , P' . 3 1 I - ' 's ng, Q rs TI., ,SF ' x -x, gsm, I X I :MV agpf 7: 4 X an ' 7 X l f I - I -5 'Hants ' ' A l ,QM V ,1 + ,TI ' -I. ,- X 3 f ., 1 R HQ, f X X R., X . x - X Q- E I x K W i, . The l974-75 basketball season was filled with many thrilling moments. The mighty Whipets proved that they meant business when they fought their way right through Class C play-offs. Church St., Hazleton, Pa. 18201 Telephone 454-3641 for an appointment In producing the I 975 edition of La Vita, we have made an honest attempt to depict the I 974-75 academic year as realistically as possible. This book represents many hours of endless frustra- tion and our constant determination to produce one of Freelancl High's best yearbooks. At times, this undertaking seemed to be thankless, but we looked to our long lasting reward the finished pmduct. Although we were ohen anxious, we also had a lot of fun. Finally, we wish to thank all those who have assisted us, especially our fellow students around whom we have built this book. my Wwe llallw lf' 3 l v w 'N ' w w 4 w w , 1 r , . X 1
