Dean. 40 Our football squad, under the expert leadership of Mr Harr finished their season with one win, six losses, and one tie Despite a disappointing record, the team played good football and provided many thrills throughout their difficult schedule. Freedom 7 Monaca 7 The Big Red opened their season by traveling to Monaca to play the highly rated Indians. The deter- mined Bulldogs scored first on a long run by Theron Durr. Monaca fought back to tie the score at 7-7. The Big Red put on many thrilling second half mar- ches but were denied near the goal as the game ended Freedom 7 New Brighton 14 Freedom traveled to New Brighton for their third game. The Bulldogs outplayed the Lions throughout almost all of the game and held a 7-O lead in the last quarter when New Brighton struck for two fast touchdowns to again deny the Big Red a victory. Freedom 0 Beaver 21 For their fifth game of the season, the Bulldogs en- tertained the powerful Beaver Bobcats at hilltop sta- dium. The boys showed excellent spirit and managed to play on even terms throughout the first half but Beaver exploded in the second half to chalk up a win in the fierce rivalry. Freedom 44 Mars 19 The Big Red traveled to Mars the next week to re- cord their first victory of the year. Freedom unleashed a devastating attack on the Mars men and had com- plete control throughout. The game was a complete team victory, but particular standouts were our two tackles, Bob Hacker and Green Sykes. Freedom 0 Coraopolis 7 In their second game of the season the Bulldogs lost to a good Coraopolis team. The game was played on even terms throughout. The Big Red unleashed a good passing attack and excellent spirit and looked as though they might come through, but Coraopolis' one touchdown proved to be enough as the Bulldogs were checked when they entered Coraopolis territory. Freedom 0 Hopewell 7 After an open date the week before, the Bulldogs traveled to Aliquippa to play the Hopewell Vikings. Freedom was in control of the ball almost the entire first half but a good Hopewell defense managed to hold and conserve the victory. The Big Red kept in the game throughout on the sensational running of sophomore Ray Bukowski. Freedom 12 Linsley Military Institute 21 Linsley brought a strong football team up from the hills of West Virginia to provide the opposition for the Bulldogs next contest. The Big Red played proba- bly their best game of the season as they outplayed Linsley, who is supposedly one of the stronger teams in the Wheeling area. The annual football queen crowning was held before the game. Freedom 6 Midland 53 Freedom traveled to Midland to finish their season in one of those games where nothing happens right. It was the last game for the Big Red's coach, Mr. Harr, long known as one of the best coaches in the county. Nine seniors also played their last game for the Bulldogs. Chuck Smith and Green Sykes were exceptionally good in this game. -?251!5fff?: S'itW Freedom 58 Rochester 72 The Freedom-Rochester game was the battle for the cellar, Rochester had an extremely hot night and Free- dom played one of its best games of the year. Freedom 49 Midland 48 Freedomls most thrilling and exciting game of the year came when they met Midland. It was a see-saw battle to the last thrilling second when Freedom Hnally emerged as the victors. Freedom's out- standing players for the night were Roger Brown and Green Sykes, both of whom had an exceptionally good night. This game proved to be one of the biggest up- sets of the year. Freedom 41 Hopewell 61 Although after playing a very good first half, the Bulldogs failed to stage a comeback in the last two quarters. From the third quarter on, the Vikings had the upper-hand. 2 ,X if 1 ?,k La gf -gf-.2 f W 2 ' 1 K . . ,g Ii - K 5. ,....,--Mg,,, ' ,, '?i . ,B ,my gl 4 NATIONAL HONKAR SgClETY UW' HW to Swami' LEADERSHIP 2-'P-S scnouxnsmv EAWLS S Oz ' f X X Www 5 ROII' l: N. Publishing a yearbook isn't merely having a lot of fun and getting excused from classes. From September until February, the various staffs were kept busy planning the dummy, writing copy, taking and keeping picture appointments, typ- ing, art work, and countless other duties. Besides all this, there were two other big worries-deadlines and funds. Through the guidance of Mrs. McConnel, and the untiring efforts of the editors, the Shawnee finally went to press. Now you see the results of all this work. We hope you like it. 4 :L E7 'Lv , 44: V '1 . sfo' H. .944 ,- an A W , Y 454415 WT -,big K ' A 5.1124 79 4 MF?
