The Midgets completed a 52 game schedule with 27 victories and only 5 defeats. The squad was honored at dinners and lndlvldualnfeedsn but the crowing event was the Athletic banquet on April 16. Glenn Mar- tin, coach at Southern Normal University, was the principal speaker. Varsity letters were awarded to the following boys: Captain ,Barney Helllgensteln, william Bauer, Don Ketten, Roger Zlpfel, Stanley Agne, Bob Middendorf, Kent Pflasterer, Merlin Hubbard, Harold Daab, and Ed- die Bryan. Minor letters were presented to Pete Schoen, Donald Borger, Joseph Kasper,Bob Nicol, Harold Becker,Bob Becherer,Bernard Koesterer, Burl Buchanan, Jim Calkin, and Gene Gauch. Sparta-Junior Tourament 1 . Immediately after the regional tournament at Belleville, the Mid- gets' Junior team, composed entirely of freshmen and sophomores, began to prepare for the 27th annual Sparta Junior Tournament. Freeburg had won the meet last year and the boys were particularly anxious to an- nex a second leg toward permanent possession of the traveling trophy. Freeburg's first foe was Nashville and superb playing by Bryan, Calkln, Borger, Schoen, and Kasper brought home a vlctory,' 42-55. In the second round, the Blue E White faced a very highly-rated Belleville Township team and trounced them soundly, 42-28. In the semi-finals, our team ran up against a good Plnckneyville team and again came out victorious, 52-25. The Sparta Bulldogs had advanced to the finals ln the other bracket and they were strong favorites to win the champion- ship. However, the determination of the Junior Midgets was not to be denied, and as s result, Sparta was thoroughly and completely 'out- played and outsmarted. The final score was 42-29 with the winners holding a lead all the way. Eddie Bryan and Jim Calkin were offensive 'EIEIEIEIZZIEIEI' ' Ifzi ::::3:g:- and defensive giants that simply controlled things almost all the tune. Pete Schoen, Buck Kasper, Don Borger, and Bob Becherer played a steady calm type of basketball that was deadly to every opponent. So Freeburg won the Sparta Junior Tournament for the second year ln a row. 4 o s :o'96t'o Q 0 0 0, Q o Q Q O 0 O' 0.0, 0 0 Q O.. I . ,gg ' -2 22522221 155555.
