The Cahokia Conference Champs stacked up a 10-1 lead in the first quarter on three deuces and a one-pointer by Bauer, a field basket by Capt. Barney Heiligenstein, and an ace by Don Ketten. At half time the count was 18-4. Bauer having added four fleldersg Ketten three, and Heillgenstein, one, and Kent Pflasterer and Merlin Hubbard a free pitch apiece. Teamwork was perfect and their was no promiscuous shooting. The Midgets constantly fed the man under the basket. Freeburg reserves entered the game with the score 56-7 in the third period, but the regulars were back again for most of the final quarter. ' Freeburg met and defeated New Baden in the semifinals, 57-41. Aim- ing their knockout blow early, Freeburg M1dget's-poured 20 points thr- ough the hoop in a free--scoring first quarter for a nine-point lead. By half-time, with Bill Bauer hitting consistently and his teammates giving him a total of 48 ln two tournament games. Don Ketten caged 13 and Kent Pflasterer and Eddie Bryan, nine each. In the finals of the tournament Freeburg met New Athens who had advanced by defeating Okawville and Marissa. Characteristic of their drive all through district play, the Midgets sped into an early lead, unleashed their power to quickly bury their opnonents,and then cruised to a 55-25 triumph over the New Athens Yellow Jackets. The Midgets salted away the triumph in the opening quarter by plunging a dozen through the hoop, while New Athens counted only a field basket. Then as if that were not enough,Mulkey's charges continues thedr onslaught to lead 28-9 at the half. B1llCFroggyJ Bauer, 5-foot, 9-inch senior forward, increased his tournament point total to 66 by looping seven field baskets and four free throws, a total of 18 tallies, and again all of the Midgets were where they should have been and were passing the ball, where it would do the most good. DonCKatJ Ketten, 6-foot sen- ior forward, and Capt. Barney Heiligenstein, 5-foot, ll-inch senior guard, totaled 10 points apiece, and Kent!KennyP Pflasterer, 5-foot, 8 inch Junior guard, contributed eight. To enter the championship game Freeburg mauled Valmeyer, 54-19, in the opening round and whipped New Baden 57-41, in the semifinals. Thus the Midgets piled up a total of 154 points, as-compared to 85 for their three tournament foes. The championship was the second of the year for Coach Mulkey and his crew.
