Some of these teams wereitrong and therefore played a prominent part in the later development of the Midgets. Of these games our boys won lO---defeating Marissa 68--58 and 49-57, Nashville 50-58 and 42-29, Valmeyer 65-52 and 59-303 Colum- bia 69-19 and 51-20g Carterville 46--35 and Cathedral 78-50. Freeburg was defeated twice by Sparta, 49-58 and 48-40 and by Belleville Town- ship, 41-40. Conference Games - On November 16, the Midgets opened their conquest for thedahokia Conference title by going to New Baden and winning, 24-16. The Blue and White played a cautious game and were satisfied at even a narrow victory over the tall, highly-rated Zebras. Lebanon came to our school and we defeated them, 42-28. New Athens gave us a score by holding an 8-4 lead in the first quarter but we came back with l9 points in the second period and went on to win, 59-28.What was rated to be the flrst real test for the local team toof place on December l4 when the high- flying Dupo Tigers came to Freeburg. However, the game developed into a rout when the Midgets ran away with the contest, 65-46. Bauer,Ketten and Pflasterer lead the offense while Captain Helligenstein, Bryan and Hubbard'obtd1d themselves on defense. A In the final game before the Christmas holidays, Freeburgs hopes for the undefeated conference sea- son went out the window as O'Fallon put on a sensational shooting ex- hibition to win, 55-41. g After a rest over the holidays, the Midgets again open a drive for ward by walloping the Mascoutah Indians, 71-29. Another smashing vic- tory followed when New Baden was routed by the same score, 71-29. Bri- llant teamwork, passing and shooting were features of the Midgets at- tachs. Freeburg next journeyed to Lebanon and again defeated the Grey- hounds, 49-50. New Athens came here and was defeated, 49-29. The re- serve power of the Blue and White became more and more evident in this game as Helligensteln, who suffered a severely wrenched ankle and knee in the Marissa game, was unable to play. Agne, Mlddendorf, and Zipfel were performing expertly in reserve roles. with Helllgenstein still out of the game, Freeburg battled the stubborn Waterloo team into defeat, 50-59, as the conference race came into the home stretch. At this time Freeburg and OfFallon each had lO victories against l defeat: while Dupo was still very much ln the run- ning with 9-2 record. Each of these 5 teams had to play each otherone more in the final week of conference play. A crowd of l?OO people pack ed the Dupo gym on February 8 when the Midgets and their followerswent after that eleventh victory. Both teams were cautious and unwilling to open up and the first quarter ended, 5-5. The second quarter saw both teams gamble a little more and our team had built up a small lead by the end of the half, 12-9. In the third quarter Kent Pflasterer expl- oded 4 field goals, Mergin Hubbard 2 and Eddie Bryan 1 to SXVSDG the lead to 29-17 an the en of the third period. The fourth Quarter Sew the Midgets continue to dominate the play and the final score was, 57- 24. Outstanding on defense was Hubbard who held Dupo s high--scoring forward Amos scoreless. Captain Heiligenstein was able to play mOSu of the game and he also stood out on defense. Bryan, Ketten. Bauerand Pflasterer played superb basketball. If xg, - ' is 1' , . - 1 L' X Y l P '1vHn nnnwn - Y 'V Eg ' ' The stagewss set for the biggest game of the year as Freeburg and O' Fallon remained tied for first place-matching victory with v1otory.Fsns lined up as early as 4 o'clock and stood ln a drizzling rain to assure themselves of a seat for this classic contest, and they were not wrong because even before the preliminary contest started at 7 o'c1ock in the doors were closed and not even standing room remained. The Freeburg boys lost no time, and with Eddie Bryan penperlng the Panthers zone defense for four successive baskets, jumped into a 15-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Midgets defense was specially plannedto stop the sensational Carl Schneider, who had-scored 55 points in the prev- ious meeting of the two teams, and he was so entirely stymied in his efforts to get away from Heiligenstein, and later in the game, Hubbard that he became too aggressive and left the game on fouls in the third quarter.. Schneider was held to but 5 points-his lowest of this season that had given him a 22 point per game average. The final score ended, Freeburg 55 and O'Fallon 54 and while a game with Mascoutah remained on the schedule, this victory actually decided the race and gave the Mid- gets their second Cahokia Conference Championship in four years.
