L+- - 0, ' Fall Baseball s The Cahokia Conference baseball season opened on Fr1day,September 5, when New Baden came to Freeburg to start theafirst round of games. Many of the Midgets had been playing ball all summer and the future looked bright as the season opened. with Barney Heiligenstein hurling no-h1t,no-run,ball for 6 of the 7 innings Freeburg defeated New Baden, 17-2. Pflasterer, Bauer, Borger, and Heillgenstein each had 5 hits to lead the attack on Bann of New Baden. In the second game Freeburg went to Mascoutah and won behind the steady hurling of Eddie Bryan, 5-l. Pflasterer again had 5 hits for the Midgets. O'Fallon,came to Freeburg tied for first place,and the Blue 8 White won this very important game l-O. Bryan and Barth faced each other in a pitchers duel that finally, ended when Barth threw wildly to third base on an attempted f1elder's choice. Lady luck turned her back on Freeburg at New Athens where Schmulbach scored a l-O victory, and as O'Fallon began a new winning streak---the two tsamslwere again tied for first place. New Baden WHS defeated a second time, 16-2 and then Freeburg went to O'Fallon. Barth and Heillgenstein engaged in a hot duel in which Freeburg got 5 hits, O'Fallon only 2, but the game ended 2-l in favor of O'Fallon. Freeburg defeated Waterloo twice, 5-2 and 4-O, and won from New Athens the sec- ond we played them by a score of 2-l. We lost to Mascoutah which gave the championship to O'Fa11on. In addition to the ten conference games, the Midgets played Valmeyer 2 games and won both by scores of 4-5 and 6-O. The pitchers for the team were Co--captain Barney Heilfgenstein, Eddie Bryan and Jim Calkin. Barney and Eddie also alternating in cen- terfield. Co-captain Froggy Bauer did the catching while Zipfel, Daab, Hubbard, and Pflasterer manned the infield positions and Pete Schoen, Bob N1col,Moon Becker, Pete Mueller, Gene Gauch, and Bob Becherer were also on the squad. Basketball The Freeburg Community High School Midgets began preparation for a busy 1945--1945 season on Monday,October l5. A schedule of 14 con- ference games promised to keep the Blue and White cagers moving at a lively pace. An enthusiastic squad of 21 boys answered Coach Austin Mulkey's call for practice and work on fundamentals were started at once. The squad was as follows: Barney Heillgenstein, Don Ketten, william Bauer,Hoger Zlpfel, Bob Middendorf and Stanley Agne-senicrsg Merlin Hubbard, Kent Pflasterer, Harold Daab, and Bob Nicol-Juniors: Eddie Bryan,, Don Berger, Pete Schoen, end Burl Buchanan--sophsgJiM Calkin, Joe Kasper, Gene Gauch, Bob Becherer, Harold Becker, Bernard Koesterer, and Bob Ledbetter--freshmen, Returning varsity lettermen were: Bauer, Ketten, Heiligenstein, Middendorf, Zipfel, Pflastersr, Hubbard, and Bryan.
