al! ' W THF FIRST Gas Wiiri. A crude rock with a small metal plaque on it marks the place of the first gas well in the United States. Natural gas was first used in Fredonia in the early l8ZO's as a means of lighting in honor of General Lafayette's visit. This incident brought fame to Fredonia. and to the Abell house where it was first used. THE B1R'I'HPI.ACli or 'mia W. C. T. U. In the Fredonia Baptist Church on December 15, 1873, 208 Crusaders, against what was called the direct foe of their homes met ,organized, and became the first NVomen's Christian Temperance Union in the World. THE GRANGE Fredonia Grange, number l, organized in 1868. appreciates the enviable honor of having been the first working subordinate grange in the United States. The Grange has always been looked upon as a tower of strength in the community and its organization and development has been very rapid so as to attract many to its membership. The Grange has proven to he one of Fredonias most important historical points of interest. LAFAYIE'I I'li'S Visit 'ro Piuiootvia One of the most famous figures of historical importance to visit Fredonia was l.afayette. Preparations were made by the whole community to receive the distinguished l.afayette in a favorable manner. The event was indeed a gala one, with speeches, music, and military reviews. It was, indeed, a great honor to have a man of such high esteem visit Fredonia. leaving behind him an occasion long to be remembered by the people then, and thus adding another chapter to our heritage. U. S. S. CUSHING II Commander William B. Cushing, Civil War hero who engineered the destruction of the Confederate Albemarle, made his home in Fredonia. Later, a new destroyer was named the Cushing in honor of our distinguished Fredonian.
