MAJ Sale and the yearbook staff have done an excellent job in preparing this edition. Your current review of the book will be of interest, however, in the future you will enjoy it even more as you flip through the pages and reminisce about fellow cadets, events and all that you gained from your experience at FMA. This letter gives me another opportunity to express my apprecia- tion to you and your parents for your part in helping make Frederick an excellent institution to receive an education that prepares you for the present and most importantly, the future. The preparation, I speak of, covers mental, physical, spiritual and social aspects. This LION TERRITORY is a great place for learning to become a productive, caring and able citizen. It's a good feeling to know that no matter where you go or what you do, everyone is watching you and learning from your actions. We feel all programs are necessary — academic, military and athletic — to produce a well-rounded person able to cope in today’s world. The athletic program at FMA 1s designed to provide athletics for all cadets whether in var- sity sports or intramural activities. Participation in sports helps to develop a sense of leadership, cooperation and discipline. A person learns that as a team member he must share equally both in victory and in defeat. I believe Frederick Military Academy's athletic program has developed to a point where we can be competitive with any other school, and we are looked on as a legitimate contender in all sports. As Director of Athletics, it is my sincere hope that each of you will develop a strong sense of good sportsman- ship and fair play while at FMA and that these qualities will prevail throughout your life. Sincerely, Rufus P. Outland Athletic Director Rupaw P Octant 21 22 Frederick Military Academy 1801 Portsmouth Boulevard Portsmouth, Virginia 23704 ADMISSIONS AND COUNSELING OFFICE 804-397-2367 Dear Students, To the seniors who will graduate and move on in higher education I wish you well. Hopefully Frederick has taught you the academic and social skills which will guide you through life. Attending boarding school has provided you with many opportunities to grow physically, mentally and spiritually. At times there have been temporary hardships with living away from home, but the rewards are many. We are all aware that it is a real sacrifice leaving family, friends and the comforts of home. Those of you who hav e made the commitment to graduate from Frederick will have a head start in life by learning to arrange your priorities so that you gain the maximum benefit with the least amount of effort. By the time you are a senior you will have learned to live and work with your peers and adults on a daily basis. You will know how to get along with others, even those who have thoughts and values which differ from you own. It takes a real politician to successfully Survive in a close environment. Frederick offers you the opportunity to develop these skills at an early age. Growth and maturity seem to make you come alive with enthusiasm for life and pride in yourself. When you attain senior status you are an independent, self-sufficient adult. You leave Frederick looking forward with excitement to the challenges beyond this campus and a sense of well-being in that you can meet these challenges head-on and be proud of your accomplishments. HONOK COURT UP-CLOSE JOHN MICHAEL ESPOSITO It seems like only yesterday I was a Freshman saying go od-bye to my family. From the start, | was determined to find the secret of success through FMA. It was not long after I found Frederick does not ask anything more than your best effort and accepts nothing less. This school also proved to be a prime opportunity for a boy to become a man providing he practices the ideas taught here. To the up and coming Corps of Cadets: If there is one thing that you must eliminate from the start, it is the indi- viduality that exists in every group. If people are to live together, they ntust do so as a team and not as a group of individuals. The simple fact is that an individual cares for no one but himself, whereas a cadet should assist his roommate, classmate, or friend as much as possible. This approach to every situation will create a healthier atmosphere and a more productive household for the future Corps of Cadets. Hang in there and good luck to all of you. 135 The past two years at Frederick have been the most challenging time of my life, both academically and in reaching goals I've set for myself. I came here two years ago hoping to improve my grades, but am leaving here with a lot more than that. I’m a senior and will be leaving, however, the day that I leave will be both happy and sad. lam happy that I am graduating and sad that I am leaving this place that holds fond memories of teachers that have taught me well, of the administration and secretaries that have helped me with my problems, of friends that I will never forget, and above all of the tact officers who have guided me, taught me leadership, discipline, who molded my character. To future cadets I leave a bit of advice — Frederick is what you make of it so why not make it good. You may not want to be here but since you are, why not do your best and make the best out of it. Because in the long run, tt will pay off. KENNETH k. DaSILVA as) (= onl A) (Olea } i , | j I've been at Frederick for four years. Frederick has taught me discipline, self-respect and respect for others. The education I received here is invaluable, as well as all of the friendships that I’ve acquired. I will remember Frederick, it’s teachers and administration forev er. (7 138 I came to Frederick Military Academy to get a good education and to prepare my way for the United States Naval Academy. Now that I look back on all the years I attended, I can say that for the most part I set and will accomplish my main reason for coming to a Military Academy. The things that I learned here about people, life, and about myself, I would have never learned about if I had gone to a public institution. The leadership that was gained also will help play a major role in my future. There are a lot of things about Frederick that should be changed, but just like anything else in this world, there is always room for change and improvement. As I prepare myself to attend the United States Naval Academy as a Nuclear Engineering mayor, I can say that I will be prepared for what is ahead of me. The main thing I would tell any person ts that motivation, education, and knowledge ts the key to success, so strive to be the best you can. Through good and bad experiences, I have learned that we need to set goals. The achievement of a goal is one of the best feelings to feel. It shows a person can do anything he desires if he wants to. Through the years, I have set and achieved goals in all three aspects of FMA. Academically my grades have im- proved. Athletics — captain soccer team, captain wrestling team, tennis, all-conference soccer. Military — with my credit we receive for parades and shows, and I am captain of HQ company. During my stay I have found that friends are the most helpful. You learn to work, laugh, study, worry, and cry together. That is why it is called cadets, a bond between each other. If I were asked to give advice to a new cadet, I would say: Play sports, be your own person, speak what you feel at the right times, and do your job as best as possible. I would also like to thank my parents for standing behind me and pushing me through. For the upcoming seniors, I would like to say: Keep a low profile and your sense of humor. KEVIN A CICECO NE UP-CLOSE 140 xs) (= mai ay(@) ESO) | JENNIFER ih, ORANGE When I first came to FMA, I was scared and nervous because I was going to be one of two girls at a pre- dominantly male school. Now that I look back three and a half years later, I realize that FMA has helped me to become a stronger and, I believe, a better person. The teachers here aren't just doing their job, they are also attempting to make us a better person. The academics here are perfect for the college-minded person and also for a person who hopes to excel in anything he or she attempts to do. It was difficult to change from the “free” life of public school, but I believe that I can honestly say that the time was not wasted. Finally, I would like to thank the teachers for the understanding and the help that have aided me in reaching my goals of going to college. 141 142 UP-CLOSE Mellel GlEiribivs Prior to my arrival at Frederick, I was lacking any kind of goals in life. If I had stayed in public schools, I would have been totally unprepared for college. By coming to Frederick, I have fulfilled my desire to be prepared for col- lege. Because my family lived in another state, I have obtained a second family here at Frederick. This family in- cluded the faculty and staff which have helped me to develop into a mature and responsible individual. Asa result of my experiences at Frederick, I have realized that I am capable of doing and being anything that I choose. In closing, I say a very special thanks to Jim Glendening. I will always remember Frederick for the good things tt has given me! An education, self-respect, responsibility, and the desire to achieve and maintain an attitude that I can always do better. All these attributes will undoubtedly help me in reaching goals and performing tasks later in my life. I was lucky enough to have a roommate that really helped me progress during my senior year. It’s been a relationship that ts unique. It is an unspoken affection that ts like that of a brother — and yet more than that. It has probably been one of the most important factors in the understanding of myself. It has been an opportunity that I would not have been able to have outside of Frederick. Thanks Keith. I plan on majoring in business administration in college. My specific goal is in-service oriented industry as I enjoy interactions with people. Yes, I have changed, it’s inevitable. Change is what brought us to this place, change is what will take us away.
