Frederick, Maryland is located in the West central portion of the State, and was first settled by the Germans in 1755. It was named in honor of Frederick Calvert, Third Baron of Baltimore, Propraetor of the Colony of Maryland. USS FREDERICK was built at National Steel and Shipbuilding Company, San Diego, Califomia. Her keel was laid April 15, 1968. Launched on March 8, 1969, she was commissioned April 11, 1970 at Long Beach Naval Shipyard, Califomia. FREDERICK is the sixth of the Class of fast Tank Landing Ships and represents a complete departure from the previous concept of Amphibious Tank Landing Ships. The ships mission is to load and transport cargo, vehicles of all types and troops to a combat area. lt can launch amphibious vehicles via the gate at the stern, land vehicles on a beach or causeway over the bow ramp, operate helicopters from the helicopter deck, handle cargo with two ten-ton booms into boats or on to a pier and carry over 550 combat troops and their equipment. FREDERICK is part of the Naval Surface Force, U. S. Pacific Fleet, and is attached to Amphibious Group Three homeported in San Diego, California. . STATISTICS Length 522 feet Beam Cwidthb ' 70 feet Displacement 8,5500 tons Draft 16 feet Speed ln excess of 20 knots Propulsion Twin screw, six 16-cylinder diesel engines. ' The USS FREDERICK In Operation Desert Strom The USS FREDERICK was part of the 15 ship amphibious armada that departed on 1 December 1990 for the Persian Gulf in support of Operation Desert Shield. Upon arriving in the Gulf of Oman, the FREDERICK along with various am- phibious ships from the east and west coast conducted amphibious exercises in preparation for an amphibious landing, if needed, in Kuwait. Upon commencement of Op- eration Desert Storm, USS FREDERICK and various ele- ments of Comphibgru Two and Comphibgru Three headed to the Persian Crulf and conducted one of the greatest mock amphibious invasions in modem warfare, that pinned down 15 Iraqi Divisions, thus ensuring a quick and decisive victo- ry for the allied forces. The FREDERICK was involved in the only amphibious landing of the Gulf War. i 1 I 5 A I -14 E isxh..
