FREDDIE COMES HOME m 62

Page 65 text:

The following is excerpted from a proposed news article concerning the deployment of Phibron One in 1983: Westpac Deployment: A phrase that conjures many different meanings. To wives, children and family, it is a long, empty period punctuated with letters and packages. To those not familiar with the Navy, a cruise conjures visions of exotic Far Eastern ports. To more knowledgable sailors, it is the realization o f sixteen hour days and a variety of missions. The fact is no deployment is routine and that of Amphibious Squadron One was even more varied and challenging than usual . . . Phibron One ships maintained high levels of operational and material readiness throughout their deployment while participating in internationally im- portant joint exercises from Korea and Thailand in the Pacific to the Horn of Africa in the Indian Ocean. Arg Alfa with 31 Marine Amphibious Unit embarked, participated in a historically significant deployment when on 2 September 1983, just prior to beginning the homeward bound transit from Mombasa, Kenya orders were received to conduct Contingen- cy Operations in the Eastern Mediterranean in support of the U.S. Multinational Peace- keeping Forces in Beirut, Lebanon . . . Arriving off the coast of Beirut 12 September at a critical point in the Lebanese conflict, Arg Alfa made a quick transition to Sixth Fleet operations and for the next thirty days provided invaluable tactical and logistics support to the forces afloat and ashore. On 10 October 1983, Arg Alfa was detached from Eastern Mediteranean Contingency Operations and returned to Seventh Fleet via the Suez Canal. Having spent 78 of 82 days at sea, Arg Alfa made a brief upkeep stop in Subic Bay, R.P. prior to continuing their delayed homeward transit. The Navy-Marine team of Phibron One Arg Alfa can take pride in their accomplishments as the Cutting Edge of The Pacific. 61
