V Q- igx x I . ,y Ee Cfufe enes AMERICAN ECONOMY: INDUSTRIAL GIANT IN LILLIPUT' The third lecture in the series was delivered by Dr. Raymond W. Morgan, Professor of Business Administration and Co-ordinator of the Social Science Division. Dr. Morgan's lecture was entitled American Economy: Industrial Giant in Lilliput . The lecture served as part of the program for Frederick's annual Religious Emphasis Week, which used a theme this year dealing with the role of the Christian and the Church in Business and Commerce in America. Dr. Morgan's lecture was concerned with the economical aspects of America, past, present and future. Dr, Morgan put forth the idea that the America is an industrial giant and Whether or not We have reached our industrial capacity is debatable. Dr. Raymond Morgan POPULAR AMERICAN MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT FRENCH LITERATURE Professor Walter Harris, Associate Professor Modern Languages brought forth a lecture entitled Popular American Misconceptions About French Literature which proved to be an enlightening clarification of some of the ideas Americans have traditionally held concerning the validity of French Literature. Prof. Harris began his lecture with a background into the ethnic origins of the language and traced the progression of the French literary movement from its beginning to the present day existen- tialists. Prof. Harris aroused much controversy within the school by tracing the English literary movement and language to the French, dating with the Norman Conquest in 1066. His statement that most Frenchmen consider Shakespeare's works to be barbaric and uncouth brought some unrest to the audience, particularly those noted Shakespeareans on our faculty. The lecture was concluded with readings in French from the drama, poetry and novel by students. Those participating were Seniors Roberta Gibson and Rodney Johnson g Juniors Liz Anderson and Mary Jo Wimsatt. K Prof. Walter Harris DEMOCRACY AND MARXISM IN LAND OF CONFUCIUS Dr. Margaret Shen The final lecture was presented on April 22 by Dr. Margaret K Shen, Chairman of the History Department. Dr. Shen spoke on Democracy and Marxism in the Land of Confucius. Dr. Shen felt that Marxism would have no far-reaching effects in the Far East. Democracy can prevail in that area depending solely upon the way in which the West exhibits itself to the people in relation to the teachings of Confucius. The modes and traditions of these people must be taken into consideration when we begin spreading the doctrine of Democracy to them, in order to avoid upsetting a way of life which pre-dates ours by hundreds of years. We must remember that the center of life in the Far East is the family and we must gear our teachings toward it. The fact that Communism has not really won in that area, despite its con- stant agression, is adequate encouragement when we look at the free Chinese Republic in Formosa. They are a constant people, set in their ways, and unwilling to move or give up their past overnight for a new ideology which teaches against all that has been inherent in their civilization for centuries.

The program is sponsored by the Special Awards and Events Committee of the Faculty under the direction of Chairman Jerome Blair, Professor of History. The lectures are spaced at monthly intervals, except during vacation periods, and are open to the public. 655468 EX LIBBISHXQ K C if li? .. ll I Q30 , iF., HDATELINE GERMANY 1970 - OUR FIFTY-FIRST STATE Dr. Joseph Stevens, Professor of Political Science and Modern Languages presented a unique lecture concerning the possibility of having Germany as our fifty-first state. The title of the lecture - Dateline Germany 1970 - Our Fifty-first State - was an original idea conceived by Dr. Stevens. He believes that within the next ten years we could make Germany a state of the union. The initiative for the statehood would have to originate with the people of Germany. They would make application for statehood. In his nine trips to Germany this year Dr. Stevens had. the opportunity to interview Germans from all walks of life, and he feels that the Dr. Joseph L. Stevens When and if West Germany becomes a state of the Union, we would automatically inherit East Germany from the Communists, because there is no legality to the separation of the two states. This of course brings about a matter in practicality of just how we would free the East Germans. UARCHEOLOGY IN THE HOLY LAND! PRESENT STATE OF THE ART This past summer Mr. Davis spent much time touring the Holy possibility of them favoring statehood is good. Dr. Stevens contends that the mere fact that every day newer and faster modes of transporta- tion are coming to the forefront is reason enough to suppose that distance would be no barrier. English is taught in schools in Germany as a com- pulsory language and he feels that reciprocal ac- tion in the U.S. would compensate for any lan- guage barrier. Land and retracing the paths of Christ and his Apostles. He recorded vivid scenes on slides and was able to visit the sites of the most recent archaeological discoveries dealing with the Bible. In the presentation of his lecture Mr. Davis showed slides and explained with the use of the slides and artifacts, which he brought back to this country, how these people of the ancient lands are still, to a large degree, living the very way they did during the life of Christ and his Apostles. Mr. 'Davis visited the region in Egypt where the Aswan Dam is being constructed and he pictorially recorded the life of the people who lived for centuries on this land. The new dam will now flood and force these people to flee from their ancient homes. Mr. Norwood Davis
