They de- termined that the best way to get him to co-operate was to expose him to his phobia which is what they do in the photo on the right. Big Brother is omni- present on the screen above. sails' sill 69 Winston's love for Julia, portrayed by Emily Diggs, has led him into a conspiracy to over- throw Big Brother . However, his confidence was betrayed by O'Brien CDavid Williamsonl, and Winston found himself and Julia in the dreaded cellars of Minitruth . Here those who have fought being brainwashed, and following the directions of Big Brother , are thoroughly tortured by the most grotesque means available. In the photo to the left Winston is being taught that two plus two equals five, as Big Brother has said it does. This is to completely break down his thinking processes so that he will be able to follow explicitly the directions of the new regime and be a better worker for Big Brother's government! The torture is over and both Winston and Julia have been thoroughly brainwashed. Here they are considerably older and have met once again in a coffee house. Their ordeal at Mini- truth has been so thorough that they do not recognize each other, even though it was their intense love which brought on their problems from the beginning.

The program is sponsored by the Special Awards and Events Committee of the Faculty under the direction of Chairman Jerome Blair, Professor of History. The lectures are spaced at monthly intervals, except during vacation periods, and are open to the public. 655468 EX LIBBISHXQ K C if li? .. ll I Q30 , iF., HDATELINE GERMANY 1970 - OUR FIFTY-FIRST STATE Dr. Joseph Stevens, Professor of Political Science and Modern Languages presented a unique lecture concerning the possibility of having Germany as our fifty-first state. The title of the lecture - Dateline Germany 1970 - Our Fifty-first State - was an original idea conceived by Dr. Stevens. He believes that within the next ten years we could make Germany a state of the union. The initiative for the statehood would have to originate with the people of Germany. They would make application for statehood. In his nine trips to Germany this year Dr. Stevens had. the opportunity to interview Germans from all walks of life, and he feels that the Dr. Joseph L. Stevens When and if West Germany becomes a state of the Union, we would automatically inherit East Germany from the Communists, because there is no legality to the separation of the two states. This of course brings about a matter in practicality of just how we would free the East Germans. UARCHEOLOGY IN THE HOLY LAND! PRESENT STATE OF THE ART This past summer Mr. Davis spent much time touring the Holy possibility of them favoring statehood is good. In the presentation of his lecture Mr. Davis showed slides and explained with the use of the slides and artifacts, which he brought back to this country, how these people of the ancient lands are still, to a large degree, living the very way they did during the life of Christ and his Apostles. Mr. 'Davis visited the region in Egypt where the Aswan Dam is being constructed and he pictorially recorded the life of the people who lived for centuries on this land.
