This is to completely break down his thinking processes so that he will be able to follow explicitly the directions of the new regime and be a better worker for Big Brother's government! The torture is over and both Winston and Julia have been thoroughly brainwashed. Here they are considerably older and have met once again in a coffee house. Their ordeal at Mini- truth has been so thorough that they do not recognize each other, even though it was their intense love which brought on their problems from the beginning.
