Heraldic symbols, as we know them today, developed with the use of armor in the Middle Ages so that the knights could dis- tinguish friend from foe in battle. Symbolism was a vital force in the thought and action of medieval times. During this period, heraldic symbols were also used in everyday life by persons who could not write, so they had to develop some way of providing the authenticity of various documents. After the suit of armor became obsolete, the symbols more and more became an emblem de- picting the ancestry of particularly distinguished individuals. Today, nearly all organized govern- ments, be they large or small, have' symbols for use on official documents. ,Frederick College is particularly proud of its official seal which is here presented to the public for the first time. The description and interperta- tion of the Coat of Arms is given in simple under- standable language, rather than in technical heraldic terms. At the top center the helmet represents both vision and strength of courage. ln the upper right quarter the ship with furled sails and oars in action stands for progress with steadfastness. This portion of the shield is taken from the Beazley Coat of Arms in which the patee crosses appear. ln the lower right quarter the crowned heart stands for the benevolence of the founder of Frederick Col- lege. ln the lower left quarter the Maltese cross symbolizes the Christian principles upon which the College is founded. The lamp in the upper left quarter is the conventional representation of knowledge. The lions on either side of the shield stand for courage and strength. May each individual connected with the Col- lege always be guided by the salient characteristics emblazoned on our Coat of Arms.
