OH RD We are the Class of 1961. This is our Book. It is our testimonial. We are graduating from twelve years of formal schooling at a time when the signs of the future seem ominous. Our American heritage---full personal development of the individual---every indiv- idual---is threatened. We seem to be drifting away from the ideal which has made citizenship in America the envy of men the world over---the ideal which places the dignity and worth of the individual above all other values. The true greatness of a people lies neither in its vast military might nor in its ability to amass capital and put it to efficient productive use. These are important. But, the high esteem accorded the individual personality is our greatest contribution to men and culture everywhere. This is our greatest asset as a people. It is our secret weapon and the only truly effective weapon in a world that can destroy itself with the push of a button. From the time of Jefferson---down through Lincoln, Wilson, and Roosevelt: we have sought to bestow a sense of dignity on the individual---to recognize his particular potentialities---to free his creative powers---to stimulate his initiative. Yet, in spite of years of cultivation of this basic concept, we seem to be drifting away from our ideal---we seem to be drifting toward impersonal rather than personal solu- tions to our problems. Giant organizations tend to submerge individuality, over-emphasis on material goods and gains, monolithic economic enterprise---all seem to lead us away from our fundamental concept of the dignity and individuality of man. Even our schools seem to be caught in this cultural drift---mass grouping, standard test- ing, Sputnik Standardization of our curricular requirements---all tend to squeeze the individual into a common mold. Yet we must know that each person is dif- ferent---he has the American right to be different---to pursue his own inter- ests, to agree or to disagree, to belong or not to belong to any group or any organization---we must know all these truths because these are the eternal evidences of respect for the worth of the individual ---every individual. This book is a chronology of the past four years of our formal schooling. We are grateful for the opportun- ities that have been ours during this period. But we are apprehensive about the future and our role in it. It is our hope that the class of 1961 across the nation will do its part to stem the drift away from our paramount ideals. lmpersonal solutions to problems in- volving individuals---and all prob- lems involve individuals--will not , ibs . I o be good enough for the sixties. O 9 0 2
