1961 OH RD We are the Class of 1961. This is our Book. It is our testimonial. We are graduating from twelve years of formal schooling at a time when the signs of the future seem ominous. Our American heritage---full personal development of the individual---every indiv- idual---is threatened. We seem to be drifting away from the ideal which has made citizenship in America the envy of men the world over---the ideal which places the dignity and worth of the individual above all other values. The true greatness of a people lies neither in its vast military might nor in its ability to amass capital and put it to efficient productive use. These are important. But, the high esteem accorded the individual personality is our greatest contribution to men and culture everywhere. This is our greatest asset as a people. It is our secret weapon and the only truly effective weapon in a world that can destroy itself with the push of a button. From the time of Jefferson---down through Lincoln, Wilson, and Roosevelt: we have sought to bestow a sense of dignity on the individual---to recognize his particular potentialities---to free his creative powers---to stimulate his initiative. Yet, in spite of years of cultivation of this basic concept, we seem to be drifting away from our ideal---we seem to be drifting toward impersonal rather than personal solu- tions to our problems. Giant organizations tend to submerge individuality, over-emphasis on material goods and gains, monolithic economic enterprise---all seem to lead us away from our fundamental concept of the dignity and individuality of man. Even our schools seem to be caught in this cultural drift---mass grouping, standard test- ing, Sputnik Standardization of our curricular requirements---all tend to squeeze the individual into a common mold. Yet we must know that each person is dif- ferent---he has the American right to be different---to pursue his own inter- ests, to agree or to disagree, to belong or not to belong to any group or any organization---we must know all these truths because these are the eternal evidences of respect for the worth of the individual ---every individual. This book is a chronology of the past four years of our formal schooling. We are grateful for the opportun- ities that have been ours during this period. But we are apprehensive about the future and our role in it. It is our hope that the class of 1961 across the nation will do its part to stem the drift away from our paramount ideals. lmpersonal solutions to problems in- volving individuals---and all prob- lems involve individuals--will not , ibs . For three years, he has faithfully and diligently taught the subjects of U.S. history, social problems, and geography to the students of Frederic High. When he is not busy in the classroom, you will find him encouraging the improvement and advancement of the Golden Nugget. He has served as Coach of the baseball squad and as assistant coach of the football team. With sincere thanks, we the class of 1961 dedicate this Magnet to Mr. Gerald Johnson for his friendly personality and cheerful attitude to the entire student body. I guess we were just as green as the upper classmen said we were. But we all pulled through. Our Fresh- man Class Officers were: President: Tom Fischer: Vice-President: Larry Annett: Sec. -Treas. : Elaine Teigeng Advisors: Mr. Reidasch and Mr. Linehan. Our Class Officers during our Sophomore year were: President: Richard Nelson: Vice-President: Bill Peters: Sec. -Treas. : Jean Englehart. We had a picnic at St. Croix Falls at the end of the school year. All in all our Sophomore year proved to be enjoyable. Our Junior year was the most thrilling of all our years in F. H. S. The first big event was homecoming. We really had a ball working on our float. Well, not really working on the float, but afterwards. Remember those roads, Manny? Girls, remember the haunted houses? I guess it was a good thing that we boys were along. Needless to say we received first prize with our homecoming float. Alan, do you remember homecoming night? No brakes on your car! Our class play was the next big event. The title was, State Fair. Mr. Giles and Mr. Pederson were the di- rectors. We all had a lot of fun and I am sure that we all will remember it, especi ally Mr. Giles and Mr. Pederson, I am sure that they thought we would never get our parts learned. Our next big event was our Junior Prom, its theme was 'Let's take an old fashioned walk. The King was Lowell Teitz, Queen was Karen Thomp- son. Our Junior Class Officers were: President: Janet Clausen: Vice-President: Karen Thompson: Sec. -Treas. : Jim Johnson. Class Officers for our Senior year were: President: Elaine Teigen: Vice-Presi- dent: Brian Freeberg: Sec. -Treas. : Judy Ash. We started off with a bang in our Senior year by taking 4th place in the float contest, but we made up for this loss with our fabulous homecoming decorations. Our homecoming theme was Twilight Time. The homecoming queen was Sharon Hanson escorted by Richard Nelson. The attendants were Rosalie Bearlieu escorted by Bill Utley and Judy Ash escorted by Leif Erickson. The Senior Class Play, Merry Christmas, Mr. Baxter, directed by Mr. Riedasch, was a big success. After the play we all went to the Pizza House in Siren and then a big party at Ardell Johnson'sl Kay Hoover really got her head dunked that night. If you don't believe this, talk to Lief Erickson about it. In a very short time, Christmas was upon us. The Senior Boys took charge of the Christ- mas program which proved to be enjoyed by all. With three and a half years be- hind us, we decided to make the best of the remaining school year. We did this by putting forth all our efforts into one big day consisting of a Carnival, Auction and Dance. This action brought us enough money to pay for our class trip to Lutsen's Resort in Northern Minnesota. The Juniors have our thanks for the good times they showed us at the banquet and the prom which were beautifully decorated.
