His first tour of duty was on board the cruiser USS HELENA, followed by duty on board the destroyer-escort USS SWEARER. This duty was followed by assignment as boat group and salvage officer on the USS OKANOGAN KAPA-2205 and, later,as Division Officer on the USS POCONO QAGC-165. ln September T949, Commander Shrake was assigned as Gunnery Triangulation Officer to the Atlantic Fleet Camera Party, with subsequent assignment as Officer in Charge of the triangulation group at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. After Guantanamo, Commander Shrake served on board the cruiser USS HELENA as Fire Control Officer and, on board the de- stroyer USS JAMES E.. KYES, as Operations Officer. This was followed by assignment as Commanding Officer of the Naval Reserve Training Center at St. Paul. Minnesota in 1955, ln l958, Commander Shrake reported on board the destroyer USS ROBINSON as Executive Officer. This was followed by a tour as Commanding Officer of the ocean mine- sweeper USS FIDELITY. Upon completion of this assignment, Commander Shrake was trans- ferred to the NROTC unit at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as instructor in navigation and engineering followed by assignment as Executive Officer of the unit. While at Rensse- laer, Commander Shrake completed work for a Master of Science degree in management and industrial engineering. He assumed command of the USS FRED T. -'W- ' '5'f-i w5',,,- '-'-,'-f -'3'47l+ f+ - ' P Executive Officer Lieutentant Commander Robert Lee O'Connell was graduated from the Maine Mari time Academy and commissioned in 1954. His first tour of duty was aboard USS ALUDRA CAF-551 where he served as Gunnery Officer and First Lieutentant until November 1956. He then reported to the Newport based destroyer USS HARLAN R. DICKSON KDD-7081 for duty as First Lieutentant and Navigator. ln October 1958, Mr. O'ConneIl left DICKSON for duty as Operations Officer of USS BROWNSON CDD-6805. He became Executive Officer of the USS BROWNSON later in this tour. ln November 1959 Mr. O'Connell began a tour of overseas shore duty with the Naval Support Activity in Naples which lasted until August of 1962. He then assumed the duties of Officer in charge of USS LOESE.RlDE-6801, a reserve training ship. He reported on the USS BERRY in January 1964 and was promoted to Lieutentant Commander in June.
