ln March l96l, the BERRY entered the Boston Naval Shipyard to undergo a seven month FRAM ll overhaul. Leaving FRAM II overhaul, the BERRY returned to serve with the Atlantic Fleet. 'ln May of 1962 the BERRY participated in Proiect Mercury. While on Proiect Mercury she visited Bermuda for several days. Then in June she began another Midshipman Train- ing Cruise spending most of the ensuing six weeks in ASW exercises in the Atlantic. Ar the beginning of fiscal year 62 the FRED T. BERRY was designated a General Purpose Destroyer. ln September l962 she departed for a seven month tour of duty with the SIXTH FLEET. After a visit to Beirut, Lebanon, the BERRY passed through the Suez Canal on 17 .lan- uary and reported to Commander, Middle East Force, for duty. During the following six weeks she visited Massawa, Ethiopia where she participated in ceremonies witnessed by Haile Selassie, Emperor. She also visited the British Protectorate of Aden, Bahreinp Ras Tanura, Saudi Arabia, Bandar 'Abbas, lran, a deserted island in the Persian Gulf, named Sir Abu Nu Air, and Jidda, Saudi Arabia. After being relieved of her Middle East duties, the BERRY once again passed through the Suez Canal and, after an independent cross- ing of the Mediterranean and Atlantic Ocean with stops at Rota, Spain and the Azores, returned to Newport on the lst of April l963. April and May were spent in Newport with the BERRY participating in a number of local operations. On the 4th of June, she embarked 2l Midshipmen and ioined Task Group' 83.4 for seven weeks of ASW operations. During this cruise, the BERRY visited Bermuda and Halifax.. , The latter half of i963 was spent in upkeep and hunter-killer operations. Finally, in April l964, the BERRY departed for the four month Med tour described in this book. His first tour of duty was on board the cruiser USS HELENA, followed by duty on board the destroyer-escort USS SWEARER. This duty was followed by assignment as boat group and salvage officer on the USS OKANOGAN KAPA-2205 and, later,as Division Officer on the USS POCONO QAGC-165. ln September T949, Commander Shrake was assigned as Gunnery Triangulation Officer to the Atlantic Fleet Camera Party, with subsequent assignment as Officer in Charge of the triangulation group at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. After Guantanamo, Commander Shrake served on board the cruiser USS HELENA as Fire Control Officer and, on board the de- stroyer USS JAMES E.. KYES, as Operations Officer. This was followed by assignment as Commanding Officer of the Naval Reserve Training Center at St. Paul. Minnesota in 1955, ln l958, Commander Shrake reported on board the destroyer USS ROBINSON as Executive Officer. This was followed by a tour as Commanding Officer of the ocean mine- sweeper USS FIDELITY. Upon completion of this assignment, Commander Shrake was trans- ferred to the NROTC unit at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as instructor in navigation and engineering followed by assignment as Executive Officer of the unit. While at Rensse- laer, Commander Shrake completed work for a Master of Science degree in management and industrial engineering. He assumed command of the USS FRED T.
