H5 r ,. si YJ A V 4 r 1 4 l 1 l l E 3 fi I 1 I' -f'1 411 may The U.S. S. FRED T. BERRY fDD-8581 was commissioned at Mare Island, Calif- ornia on 12 May 1945. The ship was named for Commander Fred T. Berry, USN, who was killed at sea in the crash of the airship Akron. . The BERRY completed her shakedown training too late to enter World War ll, but served, two tours of duty in the Far East in the years immediately following the conflict. Following her Asiatic duty, the BERRY was converted to an anti-submarine warfare ship and transferred to the Atlantic Fleet. n Shortly after the outbreak of hostilities in Korea, the BERRY departed Newport, Rhode lsland on what was to become an around the World Cruise. While visiting Greece during the course of a routine Mediterranean deployment, she was Lordered to the Far East to participate in the Formosa Patrol. From November, 1950 until February 1951 the ship operated with task force 77 in support of U.N. ground forces. Upon completion of this duty, she was detached from the Seventh Fleet and proceeded to Newport. During 1952, the BERRY participated in routine exercises including the Nato exer- cise MAINBRACE. ln February 1953 the ship left Newport for a tour inthe Mediterranean prior to entering the yards for overhaul. During the first half of 1954 the BERRY participated in another Med cruise. Upon her return she was ordered to COMANTISUBLANT with whom she operated until entering her regular yard period in 1956. During late 1956 and 1957 the BERRY participated in training cruises which took her to Europe and South America. After returning to Newport for a brief operating period, the BERRY began her fourth tour with the Sixth Fleet in August 1957.
