A Word About Captain Foster Captain Foster was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on July 19, 1907 and attended tbe public schools in Tuscaloosa. After attending one term at the University of Alabama and a short preparatory course at the Marion Institute, he entered the U. S. Naval Academy. After gradu- ation in 1930 his first seven years of naval service were spent at sea, serving in the communication, engineering and gunnery departments of various cruisers. During tlie last year he was Engineer Officer of an underwater sound experimental ship. His first tour of shore duty found him at the Postgraduate School at Annapolis, receiving graduate training in naval engineering. He com- pleted his graduate work at the Massachusetts Institute, recei ing a degree of Master of Science ( Naval Engineering ) in 1940. From that time until the end of the war he served at sea in destroyers as engineer officer, executive officer and commanding officer of the U.S.S. MADI- SON, U.S.S. ROE, U.S.S. TARBELL and U.S.S. MOALE, respectivelv. . t the end of the war he was Chief Staff Of- ficer for Commaiuler Task Flotilla Six, which was designated bv Admiral Halsev as the prisoner- of-war rescue group of the Pacific Fleet. This Prisoner-Of-War Res cue Group participated in rescuing the allied prisoners of war held bv the Japanese on the west coast of Honchu and was in. trnmental in the release of some 21,000 allied war prisoners. Subsequent to the war, he helped establish the General Line School at Newport, had dutv as Commanding Officer of the serxice schools in Great Lakes and acted as Chief Staff Officer for the Assistant Comptroller, Director of Budget and Reports, Nav)- Department. His most recent sea duties have been Commander of a destroyer division. Commanding Officer of tlie destrover tender U.S.S. EVERGLADES, and his present assignment. Captain Foster is married to the former f ar- bara Cassidy, the daughter of Captain Richard Edward Cassidy, USN (Ret.), and has one daughter, Barbara Adair Foster, now attending the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence. The Commanding Officer Comtnamlin Officer Commander Lewis E. Davis Jr. United States Navy V s) m Commander Lewis E. Davis Jr., U. S. NAVY was born June 28, 1918 at Clearfield, Pennsyl- vania. In 1940, Cdr. Davis graduated as a Mer- chant Marine Engineer from the Pennsylvania State NauHcal School Ship, U.S.S. ANNAPOLIS, U. S. Naval Shipyard, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and served as an engineer of merchant vessels until September 1941 when he was called to active dutv as Ensign, U. S. Naval Reserve. From 1941 until 1947 Cdr. Davis served as engineer officer of various auxiliary vessels, and the light cruiser WILKES-BARRE. These vessels were in the European and Mediterranean Thea- tre of Operations e.xcept for a short cruise to the western Pacific at the close of World War II. Cdr. Da is transferred to the regular navy in 1946 while attending the General Line School, Other duties that followed were t YO years as E. ecuti e Officer of the destroyer minelayer, U.S.S. THOMAS E. ERASER, two years at the NROTC unit, Miami University, two vears as Commanding Officer of the destroyer escort U.S.S. HOWARD D. CROW and three years as Training Officer, Fleet Sonar School, Key West, Florida prior to reporting to command the FRED T. BERRY. Cdr. Davis is married to the former Harriett E. Flach of Lansdale, Pennsylvania. Thev have four children, Lewis 111, Celinda, Janice, and Harriett. C ' dr. Da is parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis E. Davis are presently residing at Clearfield, Pennsvlvania.
