Text from Pages 1 - 136 of the 1969 volume:

d 1969 Frankton High School Frankton, Indiana Volume XX A FEELING GROWS . . . An almost undefinable feeling grew among F.H.S. students during the 1968-69 school year. It had almost every emotion and a bit of every student's personality. The feeling contained the joys of success and the sorrows of defeat--the hopes of tomorrow and the dreams of yesterday. In this feeling, there was a sense of unity in activities, a sense of pride in academic achievement, a sense of spirit in sports, and a sense of hope for the future of F.H.S. students. Growth at F.H.S. was . . . ... A moment of frantic study and long awaited sectional victory. ... A big thrill as the final curtain descended on the class play. . . . The warmth and fun of friendship and the tears of a big defeat. All this and much more made up the feeling, the atmosphere, the unseeable abstraction of life, at F.H.S. Feelings of friendship grew as F.H.S. students walk hand in hand. The feelings of students varied as the days and weeks went by. They showed patriotism for their country one day, the next, the love for friendships. One night screaming their lungs out for a victory, the next attending Christmas services. Sometimes they were dis- couraged and ready to give up, but at other times they couldn't have been beaten by anything. There are both advantages and disad- vantages to small schools, but the feel- ing of closeness and spirit that developed in '68-'69 at Frankton, would never be possible at a larger school. Students Develop Feelings of Friendship, One of the many duties of hall monitors, is raising the flag each morning. First period monitors Brenda Hutcheson, and Jan Heniser, enjoy the early morning task. Veteran cheerleader, Jan Heniser, with eight years of backing the Eagles, continued to show outstanding spirit throughout her senior year. 4 F.H.S. Pep Club shows feelings of joy, unbe- lief, and determination as the Eagles rolled over the Scots, 93--67, during the Homecoming game. Reverence, Patriotism and Loyalty ... 5 Religion and faith play an important role in the life and the feelings of many Frankton High students. Frankton's first sectional trophy, captured by the base- ball team, was put on display for students and visitors. Frankton senior Debbie Van Briggle, is shown with Senator Birch Bahy, just one of the well known politi- cal figures she met while in Washington. Sen. Bahy Accepts Invitation To Speak For the first time, the Frankton High School band par- ticipated on Band Day at the State Fair. Frankton was proud of the marching members, as they made a good impression with new uniforms and a clever and lively routine. 6 The crowning of the queen highlighted the Homecom- queen with a dozen red roses. Christy's escort was ing ceremonies. This year's queen was Senior Christy Steve McGaheys. Other queen candidates were seniors, Roland, who was crowned by basketball team captain Brenda Hutcheson, Connie McClelland, Roberta Hea- Dallas Canfield, while Mr. Heniser presented the ton, and Vicki Wise. at Commencement, Just One of Many Firsts. During the sum- mer of '68, four FHS students re- ceived top spots in the competition for Miss Madison County. Senior Brenda Hutcheson, far right, led the group by obtaining the title. First runner-up went to Roberta Heaton, Second from left. Debby Davis, far left, and Peggy Flowers, second from right, rounded out the top spots. 7 F.H.S. Teens Value Modern Fads Keeping up with everyone else, Frankton students do a new dance at one of the F.H.S. sock-hops. r Wearing Nehru shirts, turtlenecks, and medalions, K. Singer, R. Conley, C. Hazelbacker, M. Chaffin, and C. Welbom, examine a black beret . Dee Strong, the friendly waitress at a local drive-up Drive-Inn, makes small talk as she makes change. Teens are teens, and those at F.H.S. are no different. They like up to date dances, tuff clothes, and just driving through the local drive-in. Styles and fads come and go, but 1968-69 will be remembered for the African Twist , the Nehru shirts, Turtlenecks, club ties, ruffles, dark hose, suede and leather jackets, and shoes with tassels and buckles. The year will also be remembered for the things that every year is re- membered. All the dates you have; all the special things you did. The Satur- day night slumber parties, and the neat things that happened at the basketball games. Many seniors realize that after they graduate, things won't be the same. For now they must enter an adult world. 8 and After School Activities One of the major changes in clothes this year, took place on the feet. Well dressed girls donned shoes with tassels, buckles and square toes. Happiness is an ice cream cone ... says Joan Staley and Greg Hobbs. Graduation Day brings many and varied feelings. Senior Vicki Wise realizes the ap- prehensions of leaving school and family, but the pride of comple- tion, and a job well done. Roberts Hotel, Brass Sound, Provide Lovely After having been crowned and presented with their gifts Barb makes a lovely queen, and Will, a handsome king, as they take a ride on the carousel. The Brass Sound, a popular Muncie group, provided excellent The banquet, served before the dancing began, music for both slow and fast dancing. was enjoyed by students and faculty alike. Setting for Prom Night on a Carousel King and Queen candidates were: FRONT ROW, Brenda Hutcheson, Jan Heniser, Pattie Faulstick, Becky Horn, and Connie McClelland. BACK ROW, Dallas Night On A Carousel provided a memorable evening for the Faculty, Juniors, Seniors and their guests. For the first time, the class of '69 broke tradition and crowned both a King and a Queen, to add more atmosphere to the prom. The Robert's Hotel in Muncie provided the setting for the carnival-style prom presented in honor of the class of '68. Pat McGinnis served as Master of Ceremonies for the evening, and Junior class Vice President, Patti Faulstich, read the class will. Serving punch to the many who attended were sopho- mores Brenda Vice, Cindy Richwine, and Donna Lucas. B Canfield, Steve Hobbs, Mark Wiggs, Phil Webb, and Scott Miner. King Wilford Alexander, and Queen Barb Dellinger, are on the carousel. Talented Students Present Comedy ... During a more ’’dramatic moment of The Other You , Mark Wiggs tries to persuade Doug Holder to get off the box containing his alter ego . Feeling one of his sick spells coming on Doug Holder is helped to the couch by his aunt, Roberta Heaton, as Jan Heniser and Dallas Canfield look on. Cast of The Other You included: FRONT, Dallas Can- field. FIRST ROW, Debby Davis, Joan Staley, Brenda Hut- cheson, Jan Heniser, Judy Litsey, and Doug Holder. SECOND ROW, Scott Miner, Sheela Whitten, Mark Wiggs, Roberta Hea- ton, and Candy Rob- inson. Director for the play was Sterret L. Nash. 12 and Musical on Frankton's Stage ... Lots of hard work and diligent prac- tice went into the 1968 musical The BackSeat of Bus 29 . From the audience- eye-view everything appeared precise and in place, but behind the scenes there was much that needed to be done--scenes to be painted, tables to be moved, and most important of all, the making of the bus around which the musical revolved. As the final curtain went down on that long- awaited night, all those involved felt sad, and just a little bit closer. Spirit, and the stamina for hard work went into the Jr. Drama Club play, The Other You . The use of fluorescent cos- tumes and eerie music gave the play the effect of your alter ego , the Other You . As the cast discussed the play at a party held later, all agreed that the play had been a real success. Before the big pep rally, Linda Davis sells football star Roger Ashby a hot dog, to satisfy his large appetite . The Men Four , composed of Roger Ashby, Dan Smith, Rick Pike, and Joe Merrit liven up the produc- tion with one of their special arrangements. 13 The feminine lead for the Back Seat of Bus 29 , was Connie McCleland, pictured here singing Who Needs You . Cl Beatriz Arrives in America ... To Become Miss Beatriz Gonzalez, from Guate- mala, became Frankton’s first Foreign Exchange student. She arrived at Indi- anapolis, and was met by several Stu- dent Council members, Mr. Nash, and her American family, the Kimmerlings. During her stay in Frankton, Beatriz also lived with the Marvin Shuters, so that she could become acquainted with both city and rural life. Besides the regular activities of a student, Beatrize became an honorary member of several clubs, and an active participant in all the phases of school life. Arriving at 2:00 A.M. on Oct. 14, at Weir Cook Airport, Beatriz looked tired and just a little scared. Introducing Beatrize to her American sister Nan Kimmerling, is Mr. Sterrett Nash. Having met many new friends in a very short time, Beatrize is es- corted out of the air- port by St. Council members of her Family . F.H.S.'s First Foreign Exchange Student. Being Frankton’s first foreign Exchange student, Beatrize is warmly welcomed to FHS by Principal, Mr. Gene Heniser. A Welcome Party was held at the home of Donna Lucas shortly after Beatriz arrived. Twist was a new game to Beatriz. Seated between her adopted sisters, Beatriz had op- portunity to get better acquainted with other members of her Indiana parents. FRONT ROW: Emily Shuter, Beatriz Gonzolez, Nan Kimmerling. STANDING: Mr. and Mrs. Mervin Shuter, Mike Shuter, Mrs. and Mr. Victor Kimmerling. Two members of the family were not photographed, Ben and Jeff Kimmerling. 15 ACADEMICS They know enough . . . who know how to learn . . . Much learning went on at F.H.S. in 1969 . . . Gaining membership in Na- tional Honor Society, receiving recogni- tion on National Merit, and S.A.T.tests, and excelling in individual subjects gave students at F.H.S. a feeling of pride in themselves, as well as their school. Students learned basic skills in the Social Sciences, languages, math and science, and vocational subjects that will aid them as future citizens in our compli- cated society. After a challenging test or group dis- cussion, F.H.S. students feel the pres- sures of a growing and more complicated educational system. With this feeling, students are aware of their opportunities, and their enlarging responsibility. F.H.S. Students Realize Importance of Algebra II teacher Mr. Emmert, points out the cor- rect procedure to his students, Dennis Trice and Sam McNammee. Drawing circles is a big part of Geometry. Larry Marcrum, under the helpful eye of Mrs. Hasecuster, adds one to his triangle. With the help of an overhead projector, Mrs. Sigler explains the steps of an Algebra equation. 18 Studying Math and Science in Our World Being closely related, the Math and Science Departments prepare college bound students to reason and to develop logic. With up to date materials, the Math Department offers General Math, Algebra I and II, Geometry, and Trig- onometry. Equation solving in Math helps stu- dents to deal with the sciences. F.H.S. offers Biology, Chemistry, and Physics The laboratories, with new and varied equipment, aided students in searching out the answers to sometimes difficult problems. Watching the activities of different types of bacteria, are Lisa Allen, and Kathy Barker. Setting up equipment for their next Physics experiment are Seniors Dave Dinsmore and Tom Masters. 19 Senior English stu- dent, Belinda Ice, gives a report on one of the ancient Greek Gods. Better Communication Is the Goal of The English, and foreign language department at Frankton strive for bet- ter communication, through better use of languages. English teachers stress to their stu- dents the importance of knowing their language so they might better communi- cate with their fellow man. The Latin Department presents an excellent background for English and Spanish. Spanish gives students a taste of a foreign country. English Nine student demonstrates the technique of making a Christmas wreath as a part of her require- ments for oral work. Junior English student Gary Hosier, gives a speech for Mr. Hubbartt and fellow students. 20 Concentration is the key to preparing Spanish food, At their Spanish Fiesta Beatriz Gonzalez, far left, helps the as Mrs. Spurgeon and Brad Duncan find out. other Spanish II students in preparing their tacos. English, Spanish and Latin Classes Instructing her small class, Mrs. Owens teaches the more advanced skills of Latin II. Conjugation of verbs is a very important part of Latin, as Marcie Starr and others found out. 21 Learning to care for, and understand children is something each girl should know. Home Ec. girls Marilyn Ander- son and Jeanie Griz- zell learn how to entertain these youngsters. Future Homemakers Receive Training ... Knowing how to thread a machine is an important first step in sewing. Lora Freeman does this quickly, as she pre- pares to make her next garment. 22 Pointing at the rating system in judging to senior Mark Wiggs, is Agriculture instructor Mr. Kerkhoff. Frankton students enrolled in Agri- culture learned many useful things that they will be able to use in the near fu- ture. Current methods and trends in crop production, and up-to-date meth- ods of handling and rearing livestock were the major things the classes studied. The Frankton Ag department was honored for all its hard work, when the sheep judging team placed first at the State Fair. Homemaking eventually comes to most girls, and the F.H.S. Home Economics classes help to ready a girl for this de- manding career. The courses, taught girls the art of cooking, sewing, and of being a gracious hostess. The girls also were involved in Child Care classes, and Home Nursing courses, all of which are important in the running of an efficient household. Ag Team Places First at State Fair... Capturing a first in sheep judging for Frankton at the State Fair in August, were Ag boys, Vic Murrah, Ronnie Sigler, Dallas Canfield and instructor, Mr. Gordon Kerkhoff. The techniques of Volleyball were again taught to the P.E. boys. Intra-class tourneys were also held to create extra interest. P.E. Classes Stress Fitness and Balance Native dances were enjoyed by Girl's P.E. Classes. Here the 3rd period Sophomores better their co-ordination, as they enjoy the dances. 24 Pointing out the stomach to Sopho- more boys, during a discussion of the Digestive System, is instructor Mr. Harbit. Health Classes Prepare Strong Minds Getting all sweaty , taking showers and everything that goes with it, become a familar routine to the Freshman and Sophomore gym classes . This year the P.E. classes participated in many activi- ties. The boys played basketball, volley- ball, dodge ball and also under went phys- ical fitness tests. The girls learned dances from various foreign countries, played scoot scoccer, volleyball and executed tumbling stunts. At F.H.S., students and teachers both agree that keeping physically fit is an important part of a good mental outlook. Closely watching as Mrs. Hover grades tests in Girl's Health, are Terry Edwards and Vicki Satterfield. 25 Shop Classes Build Concession Stand Larry Norris and Mike Caldwell get first hand experi- ence cutting patterns with the band saw. They are also demonstrating that safety glasses are a 'must' in FHS shop classes. -- Knowing how to use the hands never comes a miss. F.H.S. students have an opportunity to learn practical arts in the many shop classes and art classes. One learns best by doing. Shop projects include simple wood projects, metals, motors, electricity, upholstering, molding, etc. Students in the art classes get practical experience making useful articles for the home. Using an acetylene torch in shop classes may come in handy for Tom Pruitsy when he receives his diploma and gets out in the world. Tom may have to weld the world back to- gether. A major project of Mr. Kratevil's advanced shop class was to plan and construct a building which is used as a concession stand at the summer baseball and fall foot- ball games. The 1968 Class donated the funds for The Eagles Nest. Art Students Learn Useful Skills During Art II class, Senorita Connie poses for Gary Baldwin, in typical South of the Border Attire. Business Department Prepares Students Showing Bookkeeping student Jerry Ehman, the differ- ence between net increase and net loss is student teacher Mr. Bannon. Business Math students listen intently as they learn about future vocations in business from an Indiana Business Col- lege representative. First period typing one students, work diligently on their sheets to increase speed and accuracy. Typing classes were instructed by Mr. Bartlow and Mr. Harbit. 28 for Business Leaders Judi Litsey and Roberta Heaton show shorthand skills as they practice symbols on the board. Many F.H.S. Students were on the Business Course during the 1968-69 school year. The courses offered in- cluded Typing I and II, shorthand, Busi- ness English, Business Math and General Business. The useful materials taught in these classes will help prepare both students planning to attend a business college and those going directly from graduation into some line of work. Students looking for- ward to challenging experiences and high paying jobs seek the field of business. Business English teacher Mrs. Sigler, helps Senior Terry McCord with a puzzling problem on a Business Letter, during Business English Class. The adding machine is an important device in any business course. Pointing out the winning party in Indiana's election to Judi Litsey, is Senior Government student, Jerry Williams. The Social Sciences Breed Understanding World History students David Walker, Nancy Voss, and Dennis Church plan their group's presentation to the class. Through the study of the Social Sci- ences, F.H.S. students became more aware of their responsibilities as citizens of a democracy. They learned about the achievements of their forefathers in United States and World History, and of their significance in today's world. They learned about the topagraphy of the U.S. in Geography, and through a Sociology class, students became aware of major U.S. problems. Government classes held a little extra for this year's seniors, as the National and State elections were focused upon, and mock elections were conducted by the classes . Government students also acted out a week in Con- gress, and were kept abreast on current events and world trouble spots, along with all the other Social Studies courses. Government students act out a day in Congress as Speaker of the House Mc- Clelland recognizes rep- resentative Crawford. in a Big Election Year... The U.S. History students listen intently to Mrs. Barker's explanation of the different sections of the Constitution. ORGANIZATIONS Organization is essential to the accomplishment of any purpose ... A sense of unity grew throughout the year at F.H.S., as Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors worked together to make their club's best. Organizations ex- panded at F.H.S. in membership, activity, and service. A more aggressive Pep Club helped to spark the basketball team's spirit. The Student Council came to life as they acquired Frankton's first Foreign Exchange Student, and gave Homecoming a new slant, by having float competition between classes and clubs. Tri-Hi-Y had an enthusiastic drive for gifts to send to the men in Viet Nam, and for the first time, the Frankton music de- partment sent the high school band, in new uniforms, to Band Day at the Indiana State Fair. Clubs joined students together through a common interest, and they served many different purposes. But most of all they gave extra encouragement and initiative to Frankton students. Young Artists Achieve Goals Through Ideas The Art Club, open to any student previously, or presently enrolled in one of the art classes, is becoming one of Frankton's more active clubs. Under the leadership of President Willford Alex- ander, the club had the main attraction at this years open-house. The club had sev- eral interesting projects on display, as well as their very successful auction. At the auction they sold their drawing and painting to the public. Be- sides helping the school librarian, Miss Alspaugh, check in books, and search for material for term papers, and book reports, the twelve girls help keep the library in top condition, by putting up clever displays and eye-catching posters. Each girl gives up her study hall each day to do this interesting job. Checking out books is just one of the daily task of Roberta Heaton, as she aids senior Mary Murray. Identification on page 124. Glee Clubs Prepare Students for Choir The Choral Department expanded dur- ing the '68-'69 school year, to include two new groups besides the Boys' and Girls' Glee Clubs and the Concert Choir. These two groups were the Mellodells, a girl's sextet, and the Mixed Group, made of sixteen choir members. These groups sang at school programs, the annual Christmas program, and several outside engagements. The Glee Clubs, practicing only dur- ing homeroom periods, are mostly in Identification on page 124. preparation for the robed choir. They participated in the County Choral Festi- val and school programs. The Concert Choir, made up of 64 students, sang at several programs throughout the year, and were the main part of the Christmas program, along with the High School Band. Band Participates at State Fair Band Day It was a year of firsts at Frankton and one of the most important came from the Music Department. For the first time the Frankton High School band participated against other Hoosier bands on Band Day at the Indiana State Fair. Much hard work went into this, as the band practiced several times a week and attended a week-long camp. The Band's other big project was the purchasing of new band uniforms. This year's drum major was Randy Thomas and the head majorette was Sheela Whitten. 47 After one of the band many long trips, Head Majorette, Sheela Whitten, is all tuckered out . With the aid of a fellow band member's class jacket, she is able to take a sleep . Talon Club Project Boosts Pride in Sports TALON CLUB--FRONT ROW--C. McClelland, W. Frankton High School finally got the center of the gym floor painted, and the Talon Club gets the credit. The boys all lettermen, know the importance of keep- ing the pride of students high, so at the beginning of the year they got their proj- ect going. The club asked Miss Loretta Richardson to do the actual painting. The circle is painted with a red F behind an eagle. One of the club's outings this year, was their annual swimming party held at the Tipton swimming pool. Talon Club member, Steve Hobbs receives his third letter, and a trophy for having been voted the most valuable player on the baseball team. 48 Pep Club Girls Back Eagles All the Way Members of Pep Club are: ROW ONE: B. The many girls sparked much enthusiasm and spirit throughout the student body. They have had the reputation over past years for having notoriously loud voices, and this year has been no exception. They gave our team the backing every good team needs. Presiding over the club was Connie McClelland with Cindy Richwine serving as Vice-President. Taking care of the business matters was Secretary- Treasurer Cassie Beeman. Patti Faul- stich kept the girls in order while serving as Sergeant-at-Arms. Mrs. Mary Ann Sisson served as sponsor for the group. 49 Deadline Pressures Spur Staff Members Section editors for the 1969 EAGLITE, are FRONT ROW, S. Whitten, B. Hutche- son, W. Bradburn, C. Never enter anything without the will to win . This is what all F.H.S. athletes have in mind, whether they are running track until their lungs ache, getting into shape for basketball season, or tackling the sled . In early spring, on a stroll past the baseball practice field, one could catch a glimpse of Mr. Davis batting fly-balls giving the team a chance to practice their catching techniques. Practice makes per- fect; the team won the first sectional title in the history of F.H.S. This was the second year for football at Frankton. The teams have been undefeated both years. In the fall of '69, Frankton will have a varsity football squad. Wrestling was incorporated at Frank- ton, this year for the first time. A new wrestling mat was purchased with Athletic Department funds. Spirit and sports go together at F.H.S. One cannot help but have school spirit, whether participating in a sport, or just observing. By attending a football or basketball game, watching a track meet, or yelling at a baseball game, 'the feeling grows'. The F.H.S. Talon Club project for the year was to floor. Hopefully, this will add team and school spirit have an Eagle painted on the center circle of the gym to all sports at Frankton High School. Two School Records Broken ... Team Places Randy Hobbs and Jim Cobble take a big leap, in order to place high in the high-hurdles, during a reserve meet at Frankton. 54 Pole vaulter Larry Davis clears the height easily for a high finish. Fifth in Conference Track at Frankton High marked the end of the 1967-1968 White-River All- Sports Conference slate. F.H.S. teams placed fourth for the year. This year our cindermen placed fifth in conference meets. Ashby, Holt, Sigler and Alexander composed a winning Mile Relay Team sprinting the distance in a record time of 3:43.7. Last year’s junior Doug Holder cleared a new height of 12 ft. and 1 inch to set a new Pole Vault record for the school. Another big event for the F.H.S. track team was participating in the Pendelton Invitational Meet held at Denny Field in Anderson. They placed second in this competition. Baseball Team and Coach Paul Davis were victorious 8--6 over the Anderson Indians, in the final game of the 1968 Anderson Baseball Sectional, played at Memorial Field. This victory was the first sectional title in any sport at Frankton. Previous to the final game Frankton defeated the Lapel Bulldogs and the El- wood Panthers. The Eagles went on to the regional where they were defeated by a more experienced Carmel team. This year’s team also had an out- standing record, and placed second in White River Conference play. We all hope for another outstanding team in 1969. Senior Doug Holder steals home after Coach Davis gave him the signal. « 7 CROSS COUNTRY TEAM--ROW ONE--Sam McNamee, Clint McClelland, Dallas Canfield, and Dave Bright. ROW TWO--Coach Ted Harbit, Bud Clark, Larry Davis, Doug Holder, Dave Benefiel, Will Alexander, Terry Harrison. Cross Country Team Captures Unexpected The cross country team began practic- ing August 19. Cross Country is not one of the most glorious sports as there are not a great number of spectators at most meets and not many boys relish the idea of running two to four miles in practice each day in preparing to run a two mile race in meet competition. You have to give credit to these boys as some of them are strictly basketball players and come out to help the team out and did a very commendable job. The team placed fourth in the White River Conference meet, third in the Yorktown Invitational meet and eleventh in the sectional. The team ran a total of 54 other schools beating 34 of them. The team selected Will Alexander as captain and Dave Benefiel as most valuable. Warming-Up is an essential factor in running a good race. 58 Dallas Canfield shows exhaustion near the end of 2 mile. The varsity receives last minute instructions from starter Mr. Ray Pavy. Gene Clevenger catches a pass for a gain in yardage. Leading scorer, Bobby Brown is stopped just past the line of scrimmage. Football Team marked another undefeated season this year as reserves, under the direction of Coaches Dave Meek and Scott Kratovil. At the Awards program, it was an- nounced that the team had selected Jim Cobble as Captain and Gene Clevenger as the teams Most Valuable Player. One other award was also presented at this time. The star chart was presented to Jim Epperly for receiving the most stars during the season. Next year's Football team will move on up the ladder to Varsity status. A feeling of pride grew in the Frankton community this year, not just among the students, but also among the merchants, as they showed their pride by going all out in a remodeling program with new interi- ors and many new store fronts. The town board came to the rescue and started a street resurfacing program, getting rid of many of the man-sized chuck holes. Since Frankton cannot supply all of the needs and wants of the Frankton people, our townspeople patronize surrounding cities. All of these have shown their ap- preciation by supporting our 1969 Eaglite. CERDEN SON FRANKTON MACHINE TOOL, INC.
