Nash P0903 ADMINISTIQATICDN ADMIN ISTIQATICD Principal, Robert Ed Lee He holds the reins from behind his clut- tered desk to the crowded table of the bio- logy laboratory, yet no matter how crowd- ed his calendar, he takw an active interest in every student problem. Frankton Public School has been his chief interest since 1930. Clerk, Marguerite Miller Mrs. Miller assumed the position of office secretary and clerk shortly after the open- ing of the present school term. Her duties are many and she is at the beck and call of each and every faculty member for typing assignments, tests, menus, etc. Page 5 ADMINISTIQATIO ADVISORY COUNCIL Seated: Joe Wright, Charles Wells, Lester Sigler. Standing: Glenn Hadley, Millicent Canaday. The advisory board serves our township in many ways not recognized by the great ma- jority. The board sits in council with our trustee in making decisions of great weight. Any major improvement of the school is con- sidered first by this board before the trustee makes a final decision. One of the large assignments of this group the past year was the improvement of our school property through the purchase of adjoining land and the development of our new athletic field and play ground. A full time attorney is available to give advice on matters where the law is required. Trustee, Millicent Canaday Mrs. Canaday has completed the first year of her four year term as trustee, after having served in the capacity of clerk for seven years. Mrs. Canaday and her husband, Waldo Canaday, who served as trustee before her, have made an invaluable contribution to Frankton School, and each patron and student feels deeply his appreciation for the interest shown by the trustee's office in the develop- ments made during their tenure. To us as prospective graduates our mind will return to by-gone school days. In the fall of 1939 a group of eager young children enrolled in Frankton School for the purpose of preparing themselves to meet the obligations of life. Our teacher was Mrs. Kimmerling, who through her patience and kindness got us off to a very good start on our school career. It was in this grade that we got our first taste of school life, when we were taught to read and write. We were pleasantly surprised, upon receiving our report cards at the end of the school year, to find that we had been promoted to the second grade. . In the second grade we had Miss Adams as our teacher. This year was uneventful except for the com- ing and going of new students and old chums. The third grade teacher was Mrs. Hughes. VVhen we were in the third, the third and fourth were in the same room. This proved to be very confusing but we managed to advance to the fourth. In the fourth we initiated a new room with the aid of one of our former teachers, Miss Adams. Mis- ch1ef.was in abundance during this year and a few unfortunate persons were reprimanded for taking part in it, but never-the-less we managed to escape the perils of the paddle. In the fifth grade we had two teachers, Mrs. Morris, who was here at the beginning of the year but had to leave because of illness, and Mrs. Nash who took her place. VVe were very glad to have her help us through the rest of the year. Then came the sixth grade. Many of us took our turns at sitting under the teacher's desk for punish- ment. It had its effect. From that time we have been a well behaved group. We went upstairs for the seventh grade and we were all very happy for this new experience, because it was so different. We had so many new teachers. Mrs. Sharp was our sponsor and she helped us through this year. In our second year of junior high we started selling pencils to make money for our senior trip. Mrs. Sharp, who was our sponsor, helped us very much. At the close of school we eighth graders soon real- ized that our grade school days were over. In our freshmen year, the 1949 seniors started it out with a bang for us. We had initiation the second week of school. Being green freshmen we really shined plenty of shoes. Mrs. Sharp who was still our sponsor helped us in our Christmas card campaigning. This year we elected officers. They are as follows: Pres. Dick Davis, Vice Pres. Leo Conwellg Secretary and Treasurer, Kay Friend, Business Manager, Dick Meredith. During our Sophomore year we gained a new sponsor, Mr. Nash. We sold potato chips, pop corn, and booster buttons. We were able to have an all-school skating party at the Anderson rink. We purchased our class rings from Mr. Green of the Balfour Co. WVe were surely busy our Junior year. Mr Nash, our sponsor, directed our Class Play entitled, Family Tree, an all girl cast with Dana Heflin in the leading roll. The play was presented on Oct. 20, 1950 in the high school gym. We had our second all- school skating party at the Elwood rink. We chose maroon and white for our class sweaters. Miss Alspaugh came in as co-sponsor with Mr. Nash. It was also during this year that we entertained the senior class with a buffet supper at the Elwood Country Club and attended a movie, Father's Little Dividend. following. We helped the looks of our school by purchasing shrubbery for the front. Mr. Nash assumed the res- ponsibility for planting it. We made a large profit this year from selling pop. As seniors we realized that this would be our last year at good old Frankton High. We started the year out right by selling ice cream the first week of school. We had the first all school skating party on Sept. 18, at the Elwood rink and made the most anyone had ever made. On Oct. 5, we presented a three act comedy entitled Here Come the Brides, directed by Mr. Nash. Kay Friend and Angie Welborn took the leading roles. The Halloween Festival was held in the Gym on Oct. 30. Our class had the cake walk with Dick Mere- dith as master of ceremonies. We sold ice cream and had a food booth. We financed the building of the fireplace and also bought a light for the park. Mr. Green from Balfour came and we chose our name cards and invitations for graduation. Unlike the other classes we chose white for the girls caps and gowns and maroon for the boys to carry out the class colors. We decided to take our senior trip on May 8 to 17. Baccalalaurate was on May 18. On May 23 we had our commencement and were officially graduated. 'w fv 'L TT is ' Q! w nl PM1' lf Ai THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT One of the most active and most popular groups around Frank- ton High School is the music department under the direction of Doris Shawhan. This department provides us with music at a moments notice for any and every occasion. The band has been a source of in- spiration to the public many times this year. The oontribution of the band at basketball games cannot go without notice. The chorus composed of 48 voices sang on numerous occasions. Special groups picked from this larger group sang for P.T.A. meetings etc. Larry Sumner has served us well for the past two years at the piano. Marina Harper has shown her ability in leading the marching band and on occasion has taken charge of rehearsals of the band. Home Ee girls find that cooking is a pleasure with Keever at the helm. Twiford's Latonians This is the Latin U class under the direction of Mr. Twiford. There are eight members in this class and they find latin a most in- teresting subject. Mechanical Drawing This is the freshman mechanical drawing class which consists of fourteen boys. They learn such things as how to read and make blueprints, etc. Page 43 4-H Aclivilies one Unlimiled The 4-H clubs in Frankton school are not limited as far as activities are concerned. The past year there were approximately 160 boys and girls' enrolled in the various projects provided for 4-H participation in boys and girls divisions. Miss Keever, home economics teacher, and Mr. Kerkhoff, vocational agriculture teacher, were the leaders in charge of the clubs. They were ably assisted by a crop of junior leaders who assisted materially in bearing much of the load. Pictured on this page are fabovej Kaye Etch- ison and Jane Skillman with the United Nations flag which they made under the supervision of Miss Keever. This flag was presented to thc state 4-H leader at the Purdue Round-up. The flag has since been flown with the 4-H flag on various occasions, showing that the Indiana manbers of the 4-H clubs are doing their part to promote world peace. Pictured second are Virginia Miller, Barbara Baker, and Mary Io Smock with the ribbon they won in their respective divisions of 4-H demon- stration work. Virginia and Mary jo won the county Grand Champion ribbon in the senior division which enabled them to compete with their demonstra- vtions in the district contest. Barbara. a junior division girl, won the champion ribbon in her division but was not permitted to enter the dis- trict contest. Work of this kind cannot go with- out recognition from the Eaglite staff. This is not the only work done by the clubs but was typical of the good record they made. Pictured center is the float prepared by thc boys and girls of the Frankton clubs for thc parade at the annual 4-H fair. This float pic- tures the various fields of work covered by both clubs. Bill Lemon proudly, and rightly so, displays his Guernsey heifer. Barbara Baker shows that she is capable not only with the kitchen demon- strations but also has a prize winner in the sheep division. Kenneth Hosier demonstrates his abil- ity as a showman with his spotted-Poland China guilt. Teddy Harbit cannot only play a good game on the basket-ball court but has proven that he knows a good Chester-white when he sees one. Ken Hosier has proven his versatility when he branches out and takes in a shorthorn steer to give himself some additional experience in the field of 4-H work to say nothing of add- ing a neat sum to his growing bank account. They showed a lot of fight and were feared by every team they played. They showed a lot of scoring power in winning their first three games before dropping a hard fought contest to Summitville. In a display of power they cut down their next two opponents. The following week in the Summitville Tournament the Eagles won their opening game but dropped a close one to the host team in the final game. F rankton rebounded and defeat- ed a scrappy Fishers team by a large margin. The Eagles then went into a slump and lost their next seven games in a row before snapping their losing streak with a decisive win over Carmel. The team did not loose heart even though they did lose their game with Alexandria. This loss only fired them with the zest needed for a win over VVindfall and a final victory over Northwestern on the Wendell Wilkie hardwood. The Eagles ended the winter campaign with a 10-win and 10-loss mark including the Summit- ville tourney. just before the deadline for this copy the sectional drawing was made and the Eagles were scheduled to play Markleville at 6:30 on the opening evening of the tourney. Page 50 ECISQIJCIH This year's edition of the Frankton High School baseball team proved to be one of the best in sev- eral seasons. We are very proud of our team and are happy that they were able to initiate our new dia- mond with a winning season. The team showed great improvement each game and looked fine at the end of the season. Many improvement have been made on the field and it is hoped that there will be an expansion in the baseball program. With the proper handling, Frankton could have one of the best baseball diamonds in the country. We played five games this year, all of them at home against county opposition. The Eagles played fine ball in all of their games and won three of them. Several of the players had good batting averages and displayed many fielding gems during the games. There were only three seniors on the year's nine, which leads one to believe that with the returning lettermen and the experience they have, next year will be another winning season for Frankton.
