Class History In September, 1949, we, the class of 1953, made our first appearance in high school. We were shy and somewhat frightened by our new surroundings, After the first few weeks of excitement had subsided, we began to get into the swing of high school life, under the watchful guidance of Mr. E. S. Thomas, Jr. We selected our class officers with Jimmie Pack as president, and then settled down to work. Our year as a whole was very fruitful. Several of the girls and boys took an active part in sports, Other outside activities were a couple of weinner roasts, a halloween party, and a very successful magazine campaign. We entered the ninth grade with forty-nine pupils. During the year we lost J. W. Smith, Jimmie Pack, Jane Fagg, Robert Durham, Shirley Cross, Tommy Smith, and Christine Luck, We gained Kenneth Wilson. The marshals chosen from our class were Phoebe Williams and Shirley Presnell. Almost before we knew it, the year was completed and we were Sophomores, Our confidence had become a little more substantial. Wechose as ourclass president Dwain Hare and Mrs, James Chrismon became our home room teacher, Our class activities were a bit more numerous this year, including parties, weinner roasts, class meetings, and other enjoyable get-togethers. The marshals from our room were Edith Ausley, Peggy Horner, Peggy Hopkins, Phoebe Williams, Frank Burke and Clinton Hoover. We returned to Franklinville High the following fallas Juniors. There were many great responsibilities which fell tous. There were our ringsto beordered and plans for the Junior-Senior Banquet to be made. We againchose class officers with Richard Pugh as president and Mr. E. S. Thomas, Jr. as class advisor, Our Junior year was filled with enjoyable, unforgettable activities such as class meetings, Beta and Monogram initiations, a wonderful New Year's Eve party and numerous football, basketball, and baseball activities. The marshals were Phoebe Williams--Chief, Edith Ausley, Shirley Presnell, Peggy Hopkins, Laristine Callicutt, and Peggy Horner. In May came graduation, We assisted in the commencement ceremonies by presenting our daisy chain to the departing Seniors. Returning in September, 1952, for the last leg of our High School journey, we were fully aware of the tasks new before us. We shall forever be grateful to Miss Mary Holladay for the kind supervision she gave us as class advisor, Our officers were chosen as follows: President, Lloyd Benner; Vice President, Gracie Saunders; Secretary, Eloise Navy; and Treasurer, Johnny Marley. As Seniors our chief ac- complishments were the class play, the publication of our annual ''Memories of '53 '! and preparations for graduation, The Junior-Senior Banquet was an unforgettable event. We were deeply grateful to the Junior class for such a wonderful tribute. Graduation was soon at hand leaving us with never-to-be-forgotten memories of High School life. Thus concluding our history we say goodby to Franklinville High and turn, as individuals, toward new horizons, for which each of us must write our own history. Shirley Ann Presnell Historian
