I ' WV ■07 is . ' Dedication wa With devotion and the tirelessness of Trojans, they have served our school for many years. They have become more than our teachers; they are our friends . . . eager to help in any way they can. We feel that our lives have been en¬ riched by working with them. As we pass on to new horizons, we shall always remember the Stephens for the understanding and guidance they have shown us. Thus with sincere gratitude and love, we dedicate this 1967 Franoca to Mr. and Mrs. Tommie Stephens. ' ’A Friend to the Human Race. We, the annual staff of 1967, think that this annual is the BEST, but it would not have been possible without the laboring toil of our wonderful sponsor, Mrs. Betty Timberlake. Freshmen No Limit but the Sky” At last our class has made it to high school. Our officers are Cliff Williams, Pres.; Wendy Gupton, Vice-Pres.; Karen Colbert, Sec.; and Glenn Phelps, Treas. Spirits rise during ball games and pep rallies, and all the players dream of making the one winning touchdown. Yet after the first six weeks you realize that safety lies midway. tittMtoa Autumn Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness Rip ’em up! Tear ’em up! August 15 marked the beginning of the Franklinton Rams ' ' 66 football season. This was to be a long season turning the sweat-drenched bodies of late August into cold, numb figures by early November. Some of the football turn¬ outs soon became turn-ins, causing the Rams to be a small ball club. Since the team wasn ' t large, injuries plagued it all season. To say the least, the Rams didn ' t do too well during 1966, but with many veterans returning, things should look better in ' 67. Look out! Here comes A1! Get Ready! . . . Get Set! Go! Cheers rang out through the halls of F.H.S. during the Homecoming pep rally. With the full support of the student body, the Rams charged onto the field to endure the bruising ordeal of football. After the battle had ended and the dust settled, the Rams looked to the next game. Freshman On September 30 a large crowd assembled at the F.H. S. gym for the crowning of the Homecoming Queen. Vicki Cash ' made school history by being the first freshman ever crowned. Everyone was pleased and surprised by this unusual turn of events. Co-Captains were Tim Leonard and Glenn Phelps; Jerry Simmons was manager. The cheerleaders, led by Joan Blackley and Frances Kannon, backed the team with their cries for victory. • • ' i Monogram Club The Monogram Club, sponsored by Hiram Guedalia, is made up of students who have received a let¬ ter for participating in Varsity sports. Pumpkins, Trick-or-Treaters, and anticipation filled the Saturday of Halloween for parents and children alike. The money made in the carni¬ val is used to buy school supplies and audio-visual aids. Mrs. Marjorie Johnson was the Chairman of our carnival this year. The officers of the P. Each year we are re¬ sponsible for open house during American Education Week. In the spring our club sponsors a supper for the Lion ' s Club. With this money we pay our expenses for the coming year. We take an active part in the County Beta Convention. This year we are proud to have Barry Mangum, the County Beta President, in our club. We strive to live up to our motto, Let us lead by serv¬ ing others. Future Teachers of America F. T. A. is a club for the students who express a desire to be¬ come teachers. We help the teachers by grading papers, reading stories to the children, and helping them with art work. By working in this club, one finds out whether or not he has an aptitude for teaching. Sop Our Sophomore year has started out rather shakily grade wise, but we hope to have them back-up to par soon. We are looking forward to making the Beta Club, but ge¬ ometry is a pain. Of course with teams as good as ours, basketball is the main at¬ traction. Both the Rams and Ramettes played the season with skill and an unfaltering determination to win. They also did a wonderful job of represent¬ ing F. H. S. with fair play and good sportsmanship. And those driving dribbles and high-flying lay-ups of the Rams ' star player, Tommy Cooke, shall not soon be forgotten. See, Winter Comes Winter To Rule the Varied Year. f - • - • ; •_ _ ■ Dudley Whitaker and Nancy Currin, Statisticians 38 We Shall We have had many close and exciting games. Our won- lost record for the first eleven games is 7-4, and we are only thirteen points from being undefeated. Our boys lost to the state ' s second-ranked 1-A boys ' team, Youngsville, by six points in the last quarter after lead¬ ing them most of the game. Coach Hiram Guedalia terms our defeating Zeb Vance on our home court as the best game the boys have played. We have good players who enter games expecting to win; we believe that our good record will be even better in the second half of the season. KNEELING: Harold Woodlief, Dennis Carter, Eddie Tommy Gulley, Mike Collins, David Secor, Tommy Brooks Bennett, Manager Captain Tommy Cooke states: Our boys ' basketball team is greatly improved this year. We have good team spirit and we all give 100 per cent when playing. The addition of our sophomores has helped us greatly. Another help is the enthusiastic student support we get at the games. Our pep section is truly the best in the county. We think we have the best coach in the confei ence, and we are all looking forward to the county tournament. f Not Be Beat! lmes, Spencer Eakes, Mac Beckham. STANDING: ooke (Captain), Charles Goswick, Lewis Edwards. The Ramettes of Franklinton start¬ ed off the season with a real thrill¬ er. Dabney defeated us in two overtimes. Out for revenge, the girls whipped Dabney in the next game. Although we have lost many games, we are letting teams know that we have been there. Perhaps we will be more victorious as time goes on. The cheerleaders of the 1 66 — 1 67 basket¬ ball season have exhibited the spirit of Franklinton High School. The fine re¬ sponse of the crowds to the cheerleaders ' efforts has added vigor and spice to the games. These gals have contributed to our athletic program in a worthwhile way. Betty Ann Wilder, Kay Pergerson, Ruthie Pearce, Susan Johnson (Chief), Mary East, Carolyn Bracknell, Pam Radford. £ ' e : , 43 i J.V. Basketball and Cheerleaders i i The J.V. basketball team, led by co¬ captains Gary Dement and Cliff Wil¬ liams, is composed of five 9th graders, six 8th graders, and four 7th graders. Coach Wes Jackson works the team in the fundamentals of basketball, preparing them for Varsity ball. All the 66-67 Varsity Rams have played J.V. ball. As Coach Jackson says, The sooner you start a sport, the better your chances are of playing good Varsity ball. Cheerleaders are led by Joan Blackley and Frances Kannon. In the Air There’s a Feeling of Dazzling floats, marching bands, and Santa Claus-- all added to the magic of the Franklinton Christmas parade. F. H. S. was well represented with floats from her various activi¬ ties, including athletics, Miss Franoc ' a, and cheer¬ leaders. The parade ' s success was evident in smiling faces, the laugh¬ ter of excited children, and the feeling of good cheer shared by all. Future Farmers of America The F. F.A. will participate in many contests this year. Our Ag I boys won first place in a tool identification contest, and later the F. F. A. will enter teams in livestock judging, parliamentary procedure, and public speaking. The Seniors spearheaded the paint¬ ing of the Ag Building with every¬ one helping. Officers of F.F. A. are Don Morton, Pres. ; Donnie Hayes, Vice-Pres. ; Terry Turner, Sec. ; Charles Goswick, Treas. ; Brooks Bennett, Reporter; and Steve Leonard, Sentinel. 46 Future Homemakers of America The F. H. A. is a very active orga¬ nization with over 40 members. Some of our program topics for this year are Good Health--A Valuable Asset, Leisure Time-- Constructive Time, Your Neigh¬ bors Near and Far, and Citizenship Challenges You. These topics are taken from the National Program of Work, which is to serve as a guide so that chapters across the country can work toward common objectives. Each year at Christmas, the F. H. A. tries to carry out the true meaning of Christmas by do¬ ing something for someone else. Usually we go to the Pines Rest Home or to Murdoch School and carry gifts and refreshments. In March of each year, we honor our mothers with a Mother-Daughter Banquet. This year marks the twenty-first birthday of F. H. A. , and our birthday wi-sh to you is May you have Friendship and Happiness Always. SECOND ROW: Don Morton, David Deal, Brooks Bennett, John Wheelous, Coach Becton Corbin, Donnie Gilleland, Danny Reid, Harold Woodlief, Donnie Hayes. Our ’66 baseball season was not very successful, but we anticipate a big year in ' 67. Larry Kearney was our team ' s leading batter. Of wins, we especially gloated over beating Louisburg. Since we lost only three Seniors, the ' 67team will probably have few newcomers. May our season be the best yet! You can ' t steal that! It ' s mine ! I ' m afraid of heights. And away it goes. 53 The Rams ' ' 66 track season was a successful one. In a win over South Granville, our boys took first place in every event except the mile relay. The team also took part in the Duke relays. We were victorious in a four-way meet with South Granville, Helena, and Whitley. Three new school records were set: Charles Goswick ran the half mile in 1:59; Don Morton went to 10 ' 6 in the pole vault; and Larry Kearney made a high jump of 5 ' 6 , a jump tied by Mike Goswick. Freddie Coats broke the school freshman record in the quarter mile, running it in 57 seconds. The entire school is proud of the track team ' s fine record against larger schools. My turn, already? Up and over! Alley oop! 54 I The Monogram Banquet Our annual Mono¬ gram Banquet was one of the letter dates at F. H. S. The highlight of the evening came after supper when the awards and trophies were presented. Afterwards, every¬ one enjoyed dancing and conversing as the old clock ticked the night away. 55 Night of Nights! A Night in Buddha ' s Temple Gardens was one that the Juniors and Seniors of 1966 will never forget. We entered an Oriental garden filled with soft lights from dozens of colored lanterns. A scene of Japanese cherry trees, pagodas, pictures of Buddha, and a small bridge comprised the focal point of the garden. At the sound of the gong, we gathered at a table of deli¬ cious refreshments. Although we used finger chopsticks, it did not detract from our hearty appetites. The Nomads of Chapel Hill kept honored guests and velly happy hosts on their feet from 8 to 12. . i . The Junior Class Presents Going Places ! How ' s Frank, Aunt Mary? 1 I think she ' ll swallow a fly. You and who else? 1 Here lies the corpse of Cliff the cat. I ' m a nervous man The Juniors thoroughly enjoyed pre¬ senting Donald Payton ' s comedy, GOING PLACES. Although some mem¬ bers of the cast had to work very hard in learning lines, these wrinkles were finally ironed out. On the other hand, some of our Grandpas turned out to be amateur actors and really enjoyed hamming up their parts. Our audience was seated by eight o ' clock on the night of April 22, and the vacation that made Franoca history began. The all-star cast 58 Sounds and Voices of F.H.S. Although our Choral Group is not half as large as our Glee Club used to be, our voices still ring out loud and strong. We may be a small group, but we present programs in a big way and have entertained the P.T.A. and the student body. Practice, learn your notes, and count as you play is all we music students hear from Mrs. Honeycutt. We listen reluctantly, but we know she tells us for our own good. In the cluttered dressing rooms twenty girls rushed madly around trying to change clothes doubly quick, ex¬ claiming, Zip my dress, Who has some pins?, Button my gloves, Somebody help me find my shoes. Scared and ner¬ vous, each stood in the shadows behind the curtain to wait for the Master of Cere¬ monies to call her number. Although Rachel Hedgepeth was crowned Miss Franoca of 1967, each girl had gained something valuable through the experience. Poem We are nearing the end of a journey; The day is not far away When we shall put our school days behind us, And depart on our separate ways. Though in life our paths may not cross again, We still can never forget All the things that our school has meant to us, Or the teachers who have helped us so much . Yes, our hearts are filled with fond memories Of our school and all those within, And these shall bring us increasing joy As the years swiftly pass away. 64 Officers Kay Watson President Barry Mangum Margaret Weston Margie Johnson Mascots Amy Ball and Tommy Freddy Colors Red and White Motto The past is to be learned from not lived in.
