Though of this school We won ' t be a part, We ' ll still have you Deep in our hearts. Now we each must go Our separate way. But the memory of Each Happy day. Will Seem to keep our Schooldays near; As years go by we ' ll Hold them dear. DOLORES HARRIS Lyric Composer Pootn For many years we ' ve been together Dear Senior class of ' 62; And now we take our separate ways And bravely meet our due. We ' ve had our joys and sorrows. We ' ve had dark days and bright; But onward, nothing daunted, At last we ' ve won our fight. Classmates, for years we ' ve labored here Now each must fare alone. We leave familiar scenes today For hidden goals and parts unknown. These dear old halls have sheltered us Through many happy years. They ' ve never seemed one-half so dear Till seen through parting tears. And to our teachers one and all. We owe to you today A lasting debt of gratitude We never can repay. BETSY BLOUNT Class Poetess Chss Hisfoty As we come to the close of one door of our life, we need to pause a moment and look back on the events that have molded us into the people who fill our caps and gowns today. We, now Seniors, can only recall grade school as one big blur of years which led to the glorious realm of High School. Ushering us across that big gap were two kind souls in the form of Mrs. Margaret Pruette and Mr. Bill Vick, freshman sponsors for our class. There is nothing like freshman enthusiasm, which we had in abundance. We joined F.H.A., F.F.A., Glee Club, Football squad. Cheerleaders, Bas¬ ketball, Band, Annual Staff, Track, and Student Council; yes, we joined everything possible and we really worked hard, too. We recall with a smile the initiations and the verbal beatings we, like all freshmen, received. Somehow, with all the other activities, we did, however, manage to get some studying done that year. By our sophomore year we were beginning to take places of leadership in sports and club activities. Again We were under the leadership of Mrs. Margaret Pruette and Mr. Bill Vick, who were always there to help us over the rough spots of school life. Our sophomore year opened other areas of service for our active group. Eight of our classmates earned membership in Beta Club, and many received invitations to join the Future Teachers organization. Many won places of honor in athletics, also. It was a busy, fun-filled year that passed much too quickly. We never lacked any class spirit and by the time we were juniors, no one could hold a candle to us in any field. Mrs. Pruette and Mr. Vick were our sponsors during that year of many activities and problems. We plowed through our magazine sale and came out with enough money to sponsor the Junior-Senior Banquet. After much discussion and just as much work, everything was ready for the big night . The banquet which centered around the Southern Plantation theme ( was a smashing success. Another event which added to our class spirit was that of receiving those all important class rings. How we did flash those beautiful rings about. There was never a prouder class. An event which demanded as much time as our banquet was the Junior Play. Aunt Samanthy Rules the Roost. The hilarious antics ofSamanthy will never be forgotten. In spite of our good times our junior year was the hardest yet. Then came the year of years; we were seniors! It seemed impossible for us to sit in the seat that we had been reaching for since grade school. It would seem that all our questions had been answered, but the first half of the year found seniors wondering in a daze, thinking, What will I do next year? Once these matters had been settled, we re¬ turned to the business of learning. There was an air of sentiment which lay over every event of the year. Everything we did was done in a manner that we knew it would be our last time to do it as a class. We presented another play, Whom Shall He Marry, which was indeed another success. Eagerly we planned the class trip to Washington; after taking the trip in April, we realized that no amount of planning could equal that of experiencing it. It could not be our class that would be marching down the aisle in robes. It could not be, yet it was. Our graduation day came on May 29, 1962, and with mixed emotions we parted our separate ways. Franklinton thrashed them 19-0. .. Franklinton 14—Northern High 0 The next Thursday an improved team, the Red Rams defeated a good team from Northern Durham High School 14-0. It was a team victory with vicious tackling and blocking prevailing... Wendell 19—Franklinton 13 After scoring and h o 1 d i n g Wendell easily before a large Homecoming crowd, no one could believe that the White Rams had come to life to score twice in the last two minutes to defeat Franklinton. This de¬ feat seemed to take more out of the Red Rams than the score indicated Aefien Shefs Franklinton 18-Bethel Hill 6 The longest journey of the year proved to be the shortest return trip, after the Red Rams came to life in the second half, and ran over a hard-hitting crew from Bethel Hill. . .Franklinton 0—Weldon 25 There should be a law against a high school team averaging 215 lbs. per man in high school. It is hard for a donkey to compete in strength with an elephant. The Red Rams battled gallantly but to no avail against those giants. . . Norlina 21—Franklinton 0 A high-spirited team from Franklinton made atrip to Norlina to seek a victory, but again to no avail. The loss of a team member was felt heavily in this game, and through¬ out the season. The Rams played hard but were just outrun by a more experienced team. It ' s really rough in there. Warrenton 28—Franklinton 6 The next Friday night the Rams returned home and fought probably one of the best class A teams in the state. The Warrenton Yellow Jackets. Again the Rams came out on the short end of the score, but the Warren County rivals knew they had been in a ball game... Louisburg 26—Franklinton 0 Then came the battle of the year, Franklinton Red Rams vs. Louisburg Bull Dogs. The records were similar; however, the Rams and the Bull Dogs butted and growled all night long before Louisburg trotted off the field with a victory. Bring ' em down big ram! Aurelian Springs Forfeits to Franklinton The Rams took the field in the final game of the season, regrouped and ready to go. Getting beat was monotonous so the young men were de¬ termined to end the season the right way and in a blaze of glory. The Rams received the kickoff and marched to a touchdown. Then they held the Aurelian Springs Indians on fourth down, marched to the goal line again. Then the shocking event took place. The players will have a hard time convincing their grandchildren, or anyone else for that matter, of the situation that actually took place. The coach and three of his buddies came into the game to stop the Rams cold. After all is said and done the Rams were the true winners of the game in more ways than one. Twenty-two young men of Franklinton High School inspired by a motto of Sacrifice, Fair Play, and Determination always win! compiled a 4-5 season against tough opposition. The Junior Rams were host to the junior varsity from Wake Forest, and after getting over the nervousness and excitement of the first game won on a determined run by Tommy Kearney. The score was 12 to 7. The next week the team traveled to Louisburg for a scrimmage game and showed the home team no mercy. The Rams won by a score of 13-6. The winning touchdown came on a 43-yard pass run from Tommy Kearney to Larry Kearney. In a return game with Wake Forest the Junior Rams were soundly beaten by a score of 21-0. Wake Forest returned to Franklinton for another contest and won 9-0. The last game of the season was played before a large crowd with rival Louisburg. The Junior Rams showed the Bull Pups how football should be played. Behind the blocking of Tommy Cooke,Dickie Parham, Danny Reid, Walter Woodlief, Donnie Gilleland, Henry Matthews, J. B. Paschall, and Donald Hicks, rurming was no problem. Carl Hall, Wayne Harris, and Tommy Kearney all scored touchdowns. The final score was 20-0, and all the boys are eagerly looking to next year. MR. Several newcomers to the team played well. Then on December 6, 1961, Creedmoor visited Franklinton and was soundly trounced by the Rams. Betsy Blount with 18 points, Gloria Holmes with 15 points, and Sondra Cash with 13 points were not to be denied a victory. Then the next game was at Townsville and the ball would not drop for the determined Rams. Townsville won 47-21. Now look, that ' s my ball! A rainy night trip to Zeb Vance proved a disappointment, as the Rams were beaten soundly by their Lassies 49-21. Next came a powerful team from Bunn to visit Franklinton; they were just too much for the inexperienced Rams and went home with a 43-19 victory. But the Ramettes just don ' t give up. They traveled to Creedmoor for the last game before the Christmas holiday season to defeat a Creedmoor team who was determined to win. The Franklinton girls went home happy with a 37-34 victory and two new stars were found, Jackie Pendleton and Donna House. The future looks very bright with the team being made up of 1 senior, 4 juniors, 5 sophomores, and 8 freshmen. Get that rebound! The Rams opened the season playing host to Townsville and came out on the short end of a 43-39 score. Numerous mistakes accounted for this loss. Visiting Creedmoor found the going rough as the Rams breezed to a 53-49 victory. In the return game with Townsville the Rams gained re¬ venge by easily winning. The score was 61-47. Invading Vance County again the Rams defeated Zeb Vance by a 51-45 score. Conference Champion Bunn was swamped as Rayford, Ben, Wayne, and Vance hit double figures to lead the Rams, to an 86-39 victory. This victory vaulted the Rams into the top position in the conference. Go, Ben, Go! Traveling to Creedmoor the Rams lost their second game by a 58-49 score. The Rams hit only 29% of their field goal attempts for the game. Following the holiday break Zeb Vance visited the Rams and lost 48-40. Preseason pick Louisburg invaded the Rams home court and were defeated by a score of 59-40. Complete control of the rebounding and a strong 2-3 zone defense proved too much for the visiting Bulldogs. Snow brought a postponement but after rescheduling pro¬ cedure the outcome was pleasing as the Rams traveled to Edward Best and won their 3rd conference victory without a loss. Scoring leaders for Franklinton are: Rayford 17. 9, Ben 15.0, Wayne 13.6, Vance 4.3, Parks 3.9. JIM HENDERSON Coach 61 PtophBCU FUTUREVILLE Class of 1962 August 1, 1972 Dear Diary: Today I happened to be cleaning out the attic. I ran across an old annual, and did the kids laugh at my picture! It reminded me of all the great times the class of ' 62 had. I had a brainstorm and called up several of my old classmates who live nearby. ZELDA FIAMMjWho married a rich man and now has her own chain of fashionable dress shops, MARSHA ROSS, dean of women at the local college, and VICTOR ADAMS, business tycoon, all agreed that a class reunion was a great idea. With the kids away at camp, and another month before my private school opens, I ' ve decided to spend my vacation visiting all my old classmates. August 2, 1972 Dear Diary: I ' m on my way to Futureville with LEWIS CATLETTE as pilot. I was lucky to get a seat on the plane. BETTY JANE KEARNEY and BARBARA KEARNEY happened to be secretaries to the owner of the air lines, BILL CHELATHAM. I feel safe knowing that HOWARD PARHAM serviced my plane. I certainly hope my husband remembers to pay the ticket I got on the way to the airport. It looks as if patrolman FRED CALLIHAN could have let me by this once. Later same day Dear Diary: I checked into the Parks Woodlief Hotel which BEN NALL, car dealer, recommended highly. I was beginning to look a little bedraggled so I looked for a beauty shop. I was lucky to find one near the hotel ' . It was run by TILLIE JOYNER and ANNETTE KEARNEY. I talked to PHOEBE OVERTON, LINDA GUPTON, and JEAN STRICKLAND, all happily married. They were getting ready for the big engagement party. BETTY MATTHEWS, successful secretary, has finally hooked her boss. I stopped by the new hospital to see the head technician, BETSY BLOUNT. CAROL ANN WALSER stopped by to get the records on famous MICHAEL MORTON. She is nursing him back to recovery after his recent stock car crash. As I was leaving the hospital, I noticed two very neat looking nurses, EDNA ILAY and JEIANETTE KEARNEY, going on duty. I stopped by the Futureville High School to find Superintendent RAYFORD BOBBITT laying down the law to JOHNNY HOLMES ' twin sons. Just because your father is chairman of the board doesn ' t mean that you can get by with murder! I heard a terrible fuss down the hall. FURMAN PEACE was reprimanding a tardy French pupil. His wife is a very cute French girl. Down in the gym. Coach VANCE MENDENHALL was instructing BETTIE STROTHER ' S eighth grade in basketball. I love Chinese food so I dropped into Woodlief ' s Wang Chang Chinese restaurant owned and operated by THOMAS WOODLIEF. I talked to the famous astronaut, WILLIAM PERRY, during lunch. He told me all about his recent trip to Mars. After lunch I stopped by BEN WILLIAMSON ' S Round-Edge Paper Company to find his moccasined feet propped up on the desk. As I was leaving the famous architect, GERALD RAMEY, came in with contracts for the new building. He dropped new White House plans on the floor in his rush. August 3, 1972 Dear Diary: This morning I took in JERRY POPE ' S Circus whichhappened to be in town. I was surprised to see JAMES BRACKNELL with his son taking in all the side shows. He is a prosperous real estate agent. CHARLES ETHERIDGE was doing a fine job as ring master of this multi-million dollar circus. I stopped in at WAYNE HOBGOOD ' S Dancing Studio, where I found BILL PARHAM learning the twitch. His bank was recently robbed by a member of the class of ' 63. On my way to the airport I stopped by JOE WRENN ' S prosperous farm. Sitting next to me on the plane was DOLORES HARRIS. She was taking a vacation from her family to have her new book. Did Shakespeare Really Write Those Plays? published. Before I knew it, I was home again. I enjoyed my visits, but I ' m glad to be home with the family. I ' m looking forward to that class reunion in September.
