Under the sponsorship of Miss Edith Jackson and Mrs. laleen Mode, we began our high school years with a burst of enthusiasm. Our class was the largest in high school then, having approximately seventy members. We were seen and heard everywhere! It was really fun—pretending to know it all—when actually we didn ' t even know all about the process of changing classes, and we often found ourselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. During our first year in high school, we were very proud that several of our classmates found positions on the athletic teams. These people were no less than heroes to us. We remember well the antics that occurred with initiation, too. We did look hilarious, but it was fun. Somehow we managed to come through it all, and soon we felt as if we really belonged. Then came our sophomore year. We were in, and did we give those new freshmen a fit! Our sophomore sponsors were Miss Edith Jackson again and Mr. James Henderson, a new-comer to the high school faculty. We found these two teachers very capable of handling a lively group such as we were then. Our class began to earn recognition. Again we had many participants in the various sports. Also three of our classmates were inducted into the Beta Club, and many received invitations to join the Future Teachers of America organization. It was a year filled with hard work and much fun as our class seemed to grow stronger and closer. We could never forget our year together as a junior class. Miss Jackson and Mrs. Mode were again our sponsors. Both of these brave ladies deserved medals for guiding us so well through a year so filled with activities and problems. One of our big projects was our magazine sale. We made enough money to sponsor the Junior-Senior Banquet, and we con¬ sidered the sale a real success. The real highlight of the year came when we received our class rings. There has never been a more excited class; we were so proud of those beautiful rings! During that wonderful year we presented a play, Saved by the Belle, which we considered a smashing success. It was, too! After the play came the Junior-Senior Banquet. Our class had always excelled in the art of breaking tradition; therefore, we had the banquet at Scandia Village near Raleigh. It had always been held at home before, but everyone present seemed to enjoy the festivities centering around our Cinderella theme. We were indeed proud of that banquet. In fact, we were indeed proud of that entire year. It was truly a year to remember. At last our senior year arrived! It seemed impossible that our class had already reached that longed-for destination. We were no longer that happy-go-lucky group that entered high school as freshmen four years before. That business of getting an education seemed serious then. It was our last year together as a class. Yes, we had changed considerably. Our number had decreased by half, and there were thirty-six potential graduates seated in the senior homeroom. Our sponsor was once again Miss Edith Jackson, whom we had grown to love dearly during our high school years. Needless to say, this year, too, was filled with activities. We presented another play, Lovely Ladies, with an all-girl cast— another success. We excitedly dreamed about and planned our class trip to Washington, and after taking the trip in April, we realized what a meaningful experience the trip had been to our class. Of course, the whole year was filled with plans for graduation. Again we broke tradition and decided to graduate in black caps and gowns. Before, they had always been white. It was so strange. Was our class actually discussing graduation plans. It seemed that only yesterday we were that hustling group of freshmen who entered high school to drive the upperclassmen and teachers insane. It was we, however. Many of us tried to pretend we were happy to be leaving, but were the truth known, most of us felt saddened at the thoughts of having to leave. Our graduation day came on May 29, 1961, and the Class of 1961 left high school to step out into an unsteady future. We felt prepared, however, and we were proud to be called graduates of Franklinton High School. NANCY BEST Historian Class 19 Motto Colors NOT MERELY TO EXIST, BUT TO AMOUNT TO SOMETHING IN LIFE. GOLD AND WHITE Flower DAISY Poem The time has come for us to part And tell our classmates good-by. Wherever we are, our thoughts will turn To memories of Franklinton High. The happiest times of our lives Have been the days of our youth Where we have enjoyed many pleasures And learned the value of truth. Our departure is the beginning. For new adventures will start. But our friendship will continue. And nothing will keep us apart. To our parents, teachers, and friends We owe our gratitude For their careful guidance. Just and friendly attitude. As we leave our beloved school. May God be with us. For He is our constant guide And in Him we shall place our trust. ELIZABETH CROW Class Poetess Song THROUGH OUR TEARS Now ' s the time that we must say good-by; Smiling through our tears. Through the years we ' ve shared our dreams together; Looking to this year. Now ' s the time, graduation is here, Remember what we ' ve had we ' ll always share. Through the years, our God will always guide us To things right though doubts may come and hide us. Through the years till time is gone and youth disappears, We ' ll remember smiling through our tears. Our Season in Review September 2: The Rams opened the season like a world on fire to club and slaughter a hapless Rolesville eleven into submission by a score of 64 to 0.. . A new star was born as Sophomore Vance Mendenhall scored five times to take individual scoring honors for the night. September 9: Franklinton vs. Helena. .. The Rams continued their high scoring ways as they jumped into a fast lead and continued to score at will ' while holding the Blue Devils at bay. Senior James Moss kept the touch¬ down barage going as he contributed four touchdowns to the scoring column, and gaining 264 yards rushing to his credit. September 16: Franklinton vs. Gaston. . .The Rams ran into a determined bunch of boys from Gaston who were not to be denied, with overconfi¬ dence playing a big part as a result of their first two easy wins. The Rams went down to their first defeat of the season by a score of 7 to 0. September 23: Franklinton vs. Wendell. .. The Rams making their first appearance on the road came back like true champions to take a hard¬ hitting game from the Wendell eleven by a 26 to 6 score. James Moss continued to pile up the yardage while scoring three touchdowns to pace the scoring, while the passing and ball handling of diminutive Bill Little Gabe Parham delighted the spectators as he gave notice a new star was born. September 30: Franklinton vs. W. R. David. .. The Rams returned home in their Homecoming appearance, playing host to the W. R. Davie eleven. This game ended in a 6 to 6 tie. The play of James Moss and big Larry Senter was outstanding as it had been all year. October 7: Franklinton vs. Weldon. . .The Rams journeyed to the Tar River resort town as they met Weldon in their first conference test. They took a sound thrashing by a score of 25 to 0. October 14: Franklinton vs. Norlina. . .The midseason blues continued to haunt the Rams as they lost to Norlina by a score of 39 to 6, with the second team playing the entire last half. The Rams scored first and continued to play good ball until shortly before the half time. Then the roof fell in as Coach Henderson substituted for his first imit. October 21: Franklinton vs. W a r re nt o n. . . The Rams ventured into Warren County for their next engagement. In a game in which the Rams were to be trounced thoroughly, they came back like a veteran club against all predictions. They rose to the occasion to stop cold the highly geared attack of the Yellow Jackets and missed the winning extra point to give Warrenton a chance to ' tie up the score. Jim Moss teamed upearlyto burst the game wide open on the first seven plays from scrimmage. Larry Senter opened a gaping hole and Moss broke away for a nice 48-yard run to open the scoring for the night. In a beautifully-played defensive struggle Larry Senter, Center; Bob White, and the rest of the interior line did a magni¬ ficent job keeping the Warrenton backs at bay. Final score: 6-6 tie. October 28: Franklinton vs. Mills. . .In their next encounter the Rams hooked up in a scoring duel as defense gave way to offense. The Rams lost a thriller to Mills by a score of 28 to 18. November 4: Franklinton vs. Aurelian Springs. .. In their last game of the season the Rams rose to the occasion by clubbing the Aure lian Springs eleven to a tune of 38 to 18 score. James Moss finished his high school career in a blaze of glory as he scored 6 touchdowns to pace the attack, rounding out his year by scoring 114points andgaining 1453yards rushing, shattering all conference records. Jim ' s success is due partially to Big Larry Senter and Bill Ragland for excellent blocking on their part. SEASON RECORD.. . Won 4. . . Lost 4. . . The Ramettes showed that they have the potential, but experience was lacking and they lost to Zeb Vance by a 47-29 score. The Rams gave notice of strong outside shooting plus good defense and height. They won 46-34. In the role of host again, the Ramettes and Rams showed little hospitality to Creedmoor as both teams won—the girls, 42-46, and Ore boys, 47-41. Traveling to Zeb Vance for their return game, the Ramettes again showed lack of experience — losing by a score of 29-24. The Rams continued their rampage by swamping Zeb Vance by a 49- 38 score. In the fourth game of the season, arch rivals. Mills High of Louisburg, were visitors to Franklinton gymnasium. Showing a strong defense and amazing offense the visiting girls won 55-32. However, the boys, seeking their first win over Louisburg in two years in any sport, poured on the steam and were always ahead in winning 55-50. In summary, the following players have contributed much to the team: for the Girls at forward are Betty Faye Cole, Jackie Wynne, Betsy Blount, and Gloria Holmes; at guard positions are Lou Ellen Wheeler, Jean Miller, Dolores Harris, Jean Watson, Rosa Lee Freddy, and Andelia Pearce. The Boys are led by Graham Stroud, who has an average of 18.2 points per game. Rayford Bobbitt has an average of 12.2 per game. Ben Williamson, Bill Ragland, Wayne Hobgood, James Moss, and Larry Senter have played outstanding defense and all have worked hard fortheir 4-0 record. Betsy lays it up. Two more for Betsy. . . Cary: The Rams put on a good display of power to hand the Cary track team its first defeat ©f the season by a close score of 61 to 56. Oxford, Oxford Orphanage, and Franklinton Triangular Meet: Oxford Orphanage proved too much for both Oxford and Franklinton, but the Rams managed to take second place in the meet by defeating Oxford High School handily.
