Benjamin Franklin was the first, and remains the greatest, genius horn in the New VVorld. Like Leonardo da Vinci, genius of the Old Wiorld, Frankfin had an inquiring mind, truly majestic in scope, that gave the world a wealth of practical ideas which in very great measure advanced civilization. He was America's first great world figure. Franklin was the Godfather of tl1e United States, having written the Albany Plan of Union in 1754. As elder statesman his advice was constantly heing sought hy Wiash- ington, Jefferson, Adams, Madison and others in the United States. His judgement was sound and prevailed i11 many crises. Every year of his life was fruitful with accomplishments. Publisher, scholar, educator, citizen, soldier, inventor, scientist, phi- losopher, business man, diplomat and politician, statesman, super-sales- man, patriot, man of God and niclnhcr of the human race who loved his fellow man. All of these were areas in which the author of f'Poor Richard's Almanacw excelled. 1n the words of Philip Freneau, an early American printer-poet: W'hen monarchs tumble to the ground, successors are easily found: But, matchless Franklin! what a few can hope to rival such as you, Wfho seizld from kings their sccptered pride, And turned the 1ightning's darts asidef' On this 250th anniversary of the birth of Benjamin Franklin, we, the class of 1956 would like to dedicate our yearbook to this great American, after whom our school is named. 3
