Text from Pages 1 - 128 of the 1961 volume:

As we board our plane that is to carry us beyond our small world of Murrysville, the places we are to visit flash through our minds. We are at the outset of what will be a wealth of fascinating experiences. New faces and cultures in many strange and exotic lands await us, and you, as we take you . . . GRATEFULLY WE ACKNOWLEDGE MR. RICHARD E. For his continual work in improving the Frank- lin Round-up and for his invaluable assistance and encouragement throughout our school years, we, the graduating class of 1961, are honored to dedicate this yearbook to our teacher and sponsor, Mr. Richard E. Flickinger. 4 The ParliYnenf , up of ■iWc Hou.se of LorAs he Hou.se of Co mwsonS, s 1he highest UuwaVVr boAc ' v he UvuteA. knnculovn. TERRI CHEGWIDDEN Fellow Students, When the creator made Finland, He relaxed, wrote Hudson Strode. He took water and earth and trees and spread them about casually . . . in wooded hills and rocky fells, rivers, marshes, archipelagoes, and still blue lakes dotted with verdant islands.” I saw the result of this last summer, and I saw also the effect this had on the Finnish people. A people, who having lived in this casual beauty for so long, have become a natural, friendly, beauty-loving race, willing to fight at any cost for tbeir most precious possession—freedom. Living as one of the family I stayed with, I was able to share with them ideas, fun, and their love of life. I was also able to watch the basic unit of Finnish society—the family—operate. As a result of having been so near the Finns in their familiar surroundings, I see now that the only way that understanding between nations shall come about, is through the wiping out of ignorance as to other's ideas, cultures, and idiosyncrasies. When, and only when, this understanding comes about can the heads of state then fruitfully discuss a world at peace—at peace through understanding. I thank all of you for making my realization of this fact possible, and I am most appreciative for the opportunity to disclose my findings. Gratefully, Terri Chegwidden A.F.S. Retournee, Finland, I960 74 ALELI ROSALES To the Student Body: This one year in America is my most wonderful dream come true. Since I was a little girl, I have always had my face turned toward America. As I grew older, this desire developed into a goal and an ambition. I wanted to serve my country, gain more experience towards maturity, and see the world. Today, the world rests on the rim of a glass. Cold war freezes people everywhere. I wanted to ease the cold and bring warmth from my country. I want to display a part of my country—our culture, our i- deals, and our capacities. I also wanted to see the real American life. We’ve been exposed to the American community called Peyton Place,” to American colleges in College Confidential,” and to the rough sailing of American families in A Summer Pface. These were distorted pictures and I wanted to see the truth. I came from a very sheltered childhood. I have been protected like a crystal ball. I’ve never known overnight parties, or going home alone after six or seven in the evening. I had to grow up, and taste both ends of life—success and disappointment—if I were to become a well-adjusted, matured woman. America is making me grow up fast. In America, I was able to recapture the glorious past that I’ve read so much about—the Pilgrims, Indians, Confederates, etc., and I was able to see the future too—planetariums, science projects, museums. Here nature is at its best. Back home we had just two seasons, the hot and the wet. America has every- thing—heat, cold, deserts, and new life. The A. F. S., Franklin Area Joint High School, the Caplans, Browns, Donelsons, and everyone else have been so good and so wonderful to me. It is beyond my capacity for words to express how grateful I am and how my parents feel about this. When I go back home, I will miss America. It is my second home. I would want to come back, and I will—this time to recapture fond memories of Franklin and Murrysville of 1960-61. Sincerely, Aleli Rosales A. F. S. Philippine 75 GREECE ...
