MR BATT'S TRIP TO Tl-IE MOVIES Mr. BaTT is sTilI complaining abouT The number oT sTudenTs who play hookey To go To The ParamounT and ThereTore decides To invesTigaTe. As he rounds The corner, he discovers a crowd around The sTage door. Among Them are William and Harold Guyon Trying To geT picTures of Bob BarneTT's orchesTra, which includes Bob SbrigaTa, Tamous Tor his arrangemenT of Two TurTledoves on The TrumpeT , and MilTon Shapiro wiTh his Swing on The Sax . When Mr. BaTT sees ThaT The TeaTure picTure, The Cannibals , was wriTTen by ThaT mosT unique oT auThors, James Sullivan, he decides To sTay. Jeanne Kofier, acTing as cashier, Takes Mr. BaTT's money Tor Two seaTs, and Then he is shown To his seaTs by The ever courTeous usher, AnThony Venezia. Looking over The crowd, waiTing Tor The enTerTainmenT To begin, he discovers such celebriTies as Lorraine RichTer and RuTh Bolbach, escorTed by l-lerberT BrusT and MaTThew Anderson. Mr. BaTT seTTles comTorTably back in his seaT and Turns his aTTenTion To The screen, buT his view is obsTrucTed by The couple in TronT. Upon TurTher invesTigaTion, he Tinds They are Elsie Lashow and MarTin Cohen. The Tormer's hair seems To be sTanding on end, buT aTTer careTul observaTion one sees ThaT iT is merely her haT, which resembles a porcupine, ThaT gives This impression. Loud applause Tells Mr. BaTT ThaT he has missed parT oT The newsreel, and when he can see once more, alThough he never did find ouT who The winner was, he gaThered ThaT Elaine PeTers was compeTing againsT Claire Gropper in The Cross CounTry Race Tor AmaTeurs-Women Only . The winner received a craTe oT Burns' TooT soap. He dozes oTl7 only To be awakened when The newsreel porTrays Lucille Berman being presenTed wiTh The Nobel Prize Tor her play, Animal Crackers and Why? . She is given The prize by our Tamous poliTical Tigure, Shirley Cohen. The TeaTure picTure opens in The African jungle where Peggy Jaquiss is aTTempT- ing To converT The cannibals, Beansy Campbell and Bill Meyer, or vice versa. Peggy is on The poinT of being boiled in an immense poT oT bubbling waTer To The accompanimenT of a furious TaTToo being beaTen on a peculiar, sTringed insTru- menT by no less Than MilTon Fink. The cannibals are dancing wildly around The Tire led by The Tamous cannibalisTic iiTTerbug, DoTTy l-lyams. Peggy is led To The Tire, buT aT This crucial momenT, a whiTe cloud envelopes her and she is whisked away by an unseen Torce which proves To be noT Superman buT Sal Ambrosino. Sal has been experimenTing again wiTh a sTrange iungle disease and using as his vicTim Claire Gallin whom he hopes evenTually To cure. However, Peggy is rescued, leaves Tor her home on The TirsT boaT, marries The college aThleTe, John Sandman, and lives happily ever aTTer. Mr. BaTT leaves The ParamounT, eaTs a hearTy meal, and goes home. Now he knows why LaneiTes of I95I play hookey. Doris Marcellus BeTTy Jean PoTTs A A A 26

TI-IE JOLLY LETTERS I INTEND TO WRITE During The pasT few years in English classes, I have wriTTen various Types of IeTTers. AIThough To friends and reIaTives I wroTe deIighTfuI and amusing IeTTers, in business IeTTers I used The required formal sTyIe. In The fuTure, I hope To change my sTyIe of wriTing, and I am going To wriTe To new and differenf people. NOT only will I wriTe To Tell The Mayor of my criTicism and saTisfacTion as To ciTy affairs, buf I will wriTe To Tell The Governor of sTaTe affairs and The PresidenT of naTionaI maTTers. AfTer I have wriTTen To Tyrone Power, The young, dark, handsome acTor, To inform him of my admiraTion for him, I shall Then com- municaTe wiTh Errol Flynn To Tell him how very much impressed I am wiTh his good looks and charming manner. When Those IeTTers are signed, sealed and delivered, I shall be conTenTed and will anTicipaTe answers To Them. Unquesfionably, I shall wriTe To ask Eleanor Holm if she can give me a few poinTers on swimming. NOT only am I fascinafed and inTrigued by her diving and swimming, buT also by her form, grace, and beauTy. I can easily say ThaT I am going To wriTe To I-Iarold Gray and Tell him how he could accommodaTe his readers beTTer by having LiTTIe Orphan Annie grow up and maTure. Since Skeezix of The Gasoline Alley Comic seems To be geTTing older and more inTeresTing, I am cerTain ThaT LiTTIe Orphan Annie would also be of more inTeresT and enioymenf To her readers. On The oTher hand, I will IeT Jerry Siegel and Joe ShusTer know how much pleasure and conTenTmenT I geT from reading Superman . For a long Time now I have been having an inward debafe wiTh myself as To wheTher or noT I should wriTe To Doris Blake. Since she is capable of giving advice, I am cerfain I shall correspond wiTh her soon. AfTer reading Ellery Oueen's mysTery sfories. I am sure ThaT he musT receive a greaT deal of fan mail. Some day in The Tufure my IeTTer will be among The many oThers. MosT girls are inTeresTed in cIoThesg Therefore, I imagine I would enioy wriTing To Adrian, The famous Hollywood dress designer. Crifically, I will inform MarTin Block of The Make Believe Ballroom on The radio ThaT he spends Too much Time acIverTising and noT suTTicienT Time playing music. Scarcely a person wiTh whom I am acquainTed has never heard Bob I-Iope's program. Because of iTs comedy, humor, and casT, This program becomes a musT on our radio IisT. The Iiveliness and wiT of Bob I-Iope and his casT should be exfended To some of The dry and slow moving programs now on The air. When Brenda and Cobina are noT on, I, like numerous oTher people, will wriTe To Tell of my disapproval and disap- poinTmenT. I-Iave you ever heard Ezra STone as I-Ienry Aldrich? This program is heard by high school boys and girls because of iTs chief adoIescenT characfer, who is mischievous, humorous, and admirable. I would sincerely enioy wriTing a compli- menTary IeTTer To Ezra STone. WiTh warm esTeem and wiTh a friendly and confidenf aTTiTude, I shall correspond wiTh my former school Teachers To break The news To Them of my success or failure in The business world. Perhaps I mighT even wriTe To The Board of EducaTion To ask Them if somefhing cannoT be done abouT' The presenT sysfem, since many sTudenTs are bored of educaTion and Tail To aTTend school, be They inTeIIigenT and wise or sTupid and dumb. IT is a misfake for one To imagine ThaT The amiable, loyal, and quieT pupils do noT someTimes Tire of Their Alma Mafer. I am puzzled as To wheTher I will have enough nerve and courage To send These 27
