Q-'I MIL- . ,ffs 41 f A To change her mind. I was going To be a nurse! Why! Suppose he goT hurT. WhaT would he do wiThouT me. WaiT! Perhaps an air hosTess would be beTTer. AT IeasT I'd see him every day. I can'T sTand The sighf oT blood, anyway. ATTer This Tinal decision, my Teacher asked me abouT my ambiTion. I Told her I wanTed To be an air hosTess. She asked me why. BeTore I could answer, one oT my rivals said ThaT I wanTed To be an air hosTess, because he was going To be a piIoT. OT course, The Teacher laughed. and so did The whole class, including him , buT my Tace was so red wiTh embarrassmenT ThaT I kepT my mouTh shuT unTiI noon ThaT day. When I goT back before one o'cIock, I had TorgoTTen The whole incidenT, and was all smiles Tor him . I had a jelly bar, and gave haIT To him , when The Teacher wasn'T looking. WhaT a specimen he remained in my mind, unTiI I saw him Three weeks ago. He is now sevenTeen, buT looks TiTTeen. Could ThaT be The boy I liked so much in elemen- Tary school? I'-Ie is so shorT, and he has a German haircuT. His eyes are no longer innocenT-looking. They give all The girls The eye , OT course, I didn'T gxpecT To see him again. Now, I'm sorry I did, because I haven'T one, single, IiTTIe memory oT The Ii++Ie boy I liked so much in elemenTary school. Norma Berman A MY FIRST DATE I was TourTeen aT The Time and he was a lad oT sixTeen. Oh iT was so exciTingI How- ever, I've never TorgoTTen one deTail. Guess I'lI always remember my TirsT daTe. We were boTh in The same English class. I musT admiT ThaT The major parT oT my lessons was spenT in admiring his beauTiTuI blond hair. I-Ie seemed so unconcerned and always so engrossed in his English. No maTTer how hard I Tried To gain his aTTen- Tion, I always Tailed. Why I remember The Time ThaT I accidenTalIy dropped my books near his desk. BuT iT wasn'T he who helped me pick Them up. Oh, no, iT had To be The girl who saT behind him! Because he was so aloof and indiTTerenT I never expecTed him so much as To speak To me: much less ask me ouT. BuT iT happened. I Ie came over To me and blushing shyly, sTuTTered ouT his inviTaTion. Well, I was so dumbfounded ThaT The besT I could do was sTuTTer back my reply-yes. And Then The big day came. OT course The occasion was imporTanT enough To warranT a new dress and so I had a new dress. IT was green and The salesgirl said iT did show up The green oT my eyes. I was so nervous and iiTTery ThaT my moTher had To assisT me in my dressing. ATTer Tussing wiTh my hair, combing iT TirsT This way and Then ThaT way, I Tinally was saTisTied. IT was a quarTer To eighT, and he had said he would come aT eighT, Those TiTTeen minuTes were The worsT I have ever lived Through. ThoughTs kepT racing Through my mind. WhaT if he geTs IosT: or worse sTill whaT iT he gives me a sTandup ! Oh, how awful iT would be, a sTandup on my TirsT daTe! Why he couIdn'T: no, he couIdn'+ do a Thing like ThaT To me. BuT he could and maybe he would. Oh, if he dared, why, why I'd never speak To him again. And Tear kepT raising sTeadiIy in my hearT. BuT Then The bell rang, and all The Tear vanished. IT was he aT IasT. Oh, he looked so nice. A new blue suiT replaced The dirTy sweaTer and slacks I was so used To seeing him in. And Then he said, Shall we be going? And my hearT beaT ouT loudly, my TirsT daTe, my TirsT daTe. JeaneTTe Leshinsky L A L 24
