The Senior buTTons, on whose size we voTed, are The larger oT The Two sizes we had To choose Trom and are very ouTsTanding. We had our picTures Taken, and are now waiTing Tor The prooTs To know The worsT. AT our Senior meeTing, we eIecTed class oTTicers, and voTed on measures such as The wearing oT gowns Tor graduaTion and The amounT oT dues we were To pay. VoIunTeers Tor The Dues, Class NighT, and Prom CommiTTees were called Tor and This broughT home To me The TacT ThaT I've no one in mind To Take To The Prom. SomeThing had beTTer happen in connecTion wiTh This problem soon. OCTOBER:- The prooTs came back and mine are aTrocious. I iusT won'T believe ThaT I look ThaT way. Everyone eIse's looks decenT excepT mine. MoTher says ThaT I have To order some. Oh well! I've sTarTed To pay Tor my iewelry. We've had some com- miTTee and sTaTT meeTings and everyThing seems To be running smooThIy. We received our reporT cards and Trom all indicaTions I'II graduaTe. IAS Though I didn'T know ThaT.l Diary, I sTiII haven'T decided which man To Take To The Prom. I don'T know whaT To do. I iusT can'T decide, and don'T really wanT To Take any one whom I know righT now. I wish I could meeT someone new To ask. Well, some people say ThaT wishTul Thinking someTimes brings resulTs, and I sure am Thinking. NOVEMBER:- Our picTures came back, and They're worse Than The prooTs. Oh why, oh why, did I Ie+ moTher persuade me To geT Them? Class Day has come and gone. IT was all righT, buT noT as much Tun as iT used To be, Tor we couIdn'T wear cosTumes and suck Iollipops, buT had To behave. Class NighT is nexT monTh and I Think ThaT I've Tound someone To Take To Class NighT and To The Prom. His name is Ted. l Ie's Tall lsix TeeTl, dark and nice looking, noT handsome buT nice looking. I'Ie's a Junior aT ST. John's UniversiTy, and I'm going To ask him The nighT he comes To Lane To see Three Cornered Moon. DECEMBER:- Class NighT was swell, and Ted liked iT an awTuI IoT. I was glad ThaT I had asked him. He looked so nice, and I was so proud of him. We didn'T go ouT very oTTen during ChrisTmas vacaTion as Ted's saving Tor The Prom. MoTher has boughT me a cloudlike blue neT dress. IT's lovely. Ted's going To wear a Tux, and his TaTher is IeTTing him have The car Tor ThaT nighT. The way we're planning iT, we should have a perTecTIy marvelous Time. The Prom is aImosT here, and aTTer ThaT comes RegenTs week, and Then, why Then, There's GraduaTion, and I won'T be going To Lane anymore. Gee, I'II miss iT, and everyThing ThaT goes wiTh iT. JANUARY:- The Prom was marvelous. My gown TiTTed beauTiTuIIy, and AunT Fran lenT me her new Tur iackeT. Ted looked posiTiveIy like a Greek God, and MoTher said ThaT we looked simply eleganT TogeTher. When we sTepped inTo The gym, I couIdn'T quiTe recognize iT as The place where we so duTiTuIIy and uninspiringly had done our seTTing I6

up exercises each day Tor Tour whole years. There were muTed muITi-colored lighTs, and The band sounded swell. We didn'T sTay aT The school long, buT wenT To Green- wich Village. IT was wonderful. The minuTe Prom exciTemenT died down, we all sTarTed To sTudy diIigenTly Tor The RegenTs. Those oT us who passed had a solemnly impressive and slighTIy pompous GraduaTion. As my diploma was handed To-me, I realized ThaT wiTh This cerTiTicaTe my lasT oTTiciaI Ties wiTh Lane were cuT oTT. So help me, There was a lump in my ThroaT as I vowed To come back To see Lane as oTTen as possible. Miriam Gordon A A A Are you ready yeT, Joan? Sure I am, lv1oTher. I'II be ouT in a couple oT minuTes. AbouT halT an hour IaTer, a young girl in an evening gown walked inTo The room. She was a cuTe Thing, wiTh her hair plied high on her head. She had a beauTiTul com- plexion and wore a very ioyTul air oT expecTancy. Her moTher gazed aT her wiTh approval. ThaT dress TiTs you like a glove, ancl she wenT on wiTh her kniTTing. ATTer a considerable pause Joan asked, WhaT Time is iT, Mom? No,- noT so IaTe already! Why I'll never geT To The dance. She 'began pacing The Tloor. The door creaked--she paused- Oh, iT's only you, Dad. I ThoughT ThaT maybe- Jack noT here yeT? asked her TaTher in a surprised Tone oT voice. Joan Turned To look aT him. I-le was a man in his early TorTies, s+iII as handsome as ever. Gosh, he was good To her. Always did whaT she wanTed him To do. BuT she couldn'T Think abouT ThaT now. She was becoming worried, Tor iT was growing IaTe. Dear, please siT down. You'lI be Tired beTore you geT There. Joan conTinued To pace The Tloor nervously. lk :Il if fi' il! Time crepT slowly on. Carelessly, she ran her Tingers Through her hair in ThaT old nervous gesTure which was so habiTual. The new hair-do became messy, buT Joan didn'T care. NoThing maTTered any more. I-Ier TeeT began To hurT. Peevishly she kicked oTT her new shoes and sank inTo The reading chair. Why, oh why doesn'T he come? she repeaTed again and again. For Three weeks she'd been eagerly anTici- paTing This momenT, buT now . . . She'd been so happy, so carefree-everyone won- dered whaT had happened-why she so oTTen smiled when There was really no reason To do so-why she answered each quesTion wiTh a blank look-why she shopped al- mosT every weekend. They didn'T know ThaT Jack had asked her To his Prom. They didn'T know she had goTTen a gown especially Tor The occasion. They didn'T know The happy buT anxious ThoughTs ThaT kepT running Through her mind. Now SaTurday nighT had come, and she was all dressed and waiTing-waiTing To be Taken To The big aTFair. BuT where was Jack? lk ik ik FF lk IT was Two o'clock. Joan lay on her bed. her eyes red and swollen Trom crying. The new evening gown was crumpled in a heap on The chair. I-ler hair was all mussed up. I-ler high heeled shoes had been Thrown on The Tloor. And Joan was sTiII crying. In her imaginaTion, she heard The happy voices oT couples coming home Trom The dance. She would have been among Them, buT-Jack had noT comel Joan conTinued crying. RuTh Lucille Lebowsky A A L I7 ANXIETY .' E1 QI I I L fl ,I I I JL-n
