.LH The Prom WhaT one Thing occupies The mind oT The Senior more Than any oTher, wiTh The pos- sible excepTion oT holidays? ls iT RegenTs, The Tinal sTruggle To graduaTe, or whaT he will do upon leaving high school? No, iT is noT any oT These, buT a much more im- porTanT problem ThaT holds him. Upon enTering The eighTh Term, The sTudenT is obsessed by The idea of The Prom . Now some oT you may ask, WhaT is The Prom? , buT To mosT, There is no need oT explanaTion Tor They know ThaT iT is The social highlighT oT graduaTion, The Senior Dance. From The momenT The Prom is menTioned, The normal sTudenT becomes pensive and develops a scruTinizing naTure. Perhaps The mosT suiTable way in which To il- lusTraTe This reacTion is To convey The idea by means oT a play lalThough a play in diTTerenT Torm, in which no characTer speaksl. The scene opens wiTh Bill, our hero, planning The Type oT girl he would be proud To Take To The Prom, making sure oT all qualiTies she musT possess To measure up To his expecTaTions. The Prom is The iniTial incidenT in our play: The anTecedenT acTion is in The dim, dark pasT beTore BiII's enlighTenmenT. ATTer his model is compleTed, a Trial period OT abouT six monThs musT be lived Through, during which Bill is searching, waTching, waiTing, ever TesTing The gualiTies oT This or ThaT girl To Tind The acme oT perTecTion. All This is The rising acTion or involuTion in our play. The Torces ThaT are pulling againsT one anoTher are The Torces oT naTure, which declare Bill will eiTher go To The Prom wiTh The model girl , or sTay aT home. Time passes, disappoinTmenTs come and go, and Tinally The seemingly righT girl appears on The scene, in The person oT Mary. BuT alack and alas, she isn'T perTecT aTTer all, Tor iT doesn'T Take Bill long To discover ThaT she cannoT Lindy . This a hearTbreaking discovery, and liTe is cerTainly noT whaT iT should be, nor is anyone perTecT . The nexT Thoughr oT sagacious Bill is ThaT he should be a liTTle less par- Ticular and Try To Teach Mary To Lindy in Time Tor The big evenT. So back he goes, buT all Too laTe, Tor Mary has promised To aTTend The big evenT wiTh some oTher boyf, and Bill is The unTorTunaTe one. This brings us To The climax OT our play, and we Tincl Bill very, very downhearTed and discouraged. BuT suddenly, he remembers The girl who siTs nexT To him in hisTory class: she was raTher nice, come To Think oT iT. He had never parTicularly noTiced her beToreq buT since he has been so busy, how could he? Now, abouT The girl: She mighT be classiTied as The esTheTic Type, and while noT beauTiTul, cerTainly, very charm- ing. She is noT exacTly Bill's ideal girl : buT well, The Prom is drawing near, and one cannoT conTinue The search Tor The perTecT liT There is The perTecT T. Bill goes home exciTedp prepares TirsT This speech and Then ThaT, Trying all The Time noT To be or seem presumpTuous. The wrong speech mighT be TaTal To The desired resulTs, and ThaT would be Terrible. Finally his speech being leTTer 'perTecT, he approaches The girl aT The proper momenT, only To Tind he has TorgoTTen all The planned phrases and is speaking exTemporaneouslyl IT is here ThaT we have our Talling acTion or evoluTion, Tor The girl is very sweeT and gracious, making cerTain ThaT she is sympaTheTic, buT neverTheless, iT is a reTusal. Our hero, compleTely deiecTed, decides ThaT he doesn'T wanT To go aTTer all: ThaT he will sTay aT home and read a good book The nighT oT The Prom . This is our de- nouemenT or end. Bill resembles a greaT many sTudenTs, perhaps even ourselves, and so l mighT appropriaTely end wiTh The saying WhaT Price Prom? . Frances Georgens , A .A A I4 .

MONTHLY DIARY OE MY SENIOR TERM IEV5 -s .IU F' SEPTEMBER:- AII summer long I've looked Torward To being a Senior, and now I'm iT , OuT- wardly noThing has happened buT inside I Teel like shouTing, I'm a Senior , all oT The Time. The Senior buTTons, on whose size we voTed, are The larger oT The Two sizes we had To choose Trom and are very ouTsTanding. We had our picTures Taken, and are now waiTing Tor The prooTs To know The worsT. AT our Senior meeTing, we eIecTed class oTTicers, and voTed on measures such as The wearing oT gowns Tor graduaTion and The amounT oT dues we were To pay. VoIunTeers Tor The Dues, Class NighT, and Prom CommiTTees were called Tor and This broughT home To me The TacT ThaT I've no one in mind To Take To The Prom. SomeThing had beTTer happen in connecTion wiTh This problem soon. OCTOBER:- The prooTs came back and mine are aTrocious. I iusT won'T believe ThaT I look ThaT way. Everyone eIse's looks decenT excepT mine. MoTher says ThaT I have To order some. Oh well! I've sTarTed To pay Tor my iewelry. We've had some com- miTTee and sTaTT meeTings and everyThing seems To be running smooThIy. We received our reporT cards and Trom all indicaTions I'II graduaTe. IAS Though I didn'T know ThaT.l Diary, I sTiII haven'T decided which man To Take To The Prom. I don'T know whaT To do. I iusT can'T decide, and don'T really wanT To Take any one whom I know righT now. I wish I could meeT someone new To ask. Well, some people say ThaT wishTul Thinking someTimes brings resulTs, and I sure am Thinking. NOVEMBER:- Our picTures came back, and They're worse Than The prooTs. Oh why, oh why, did I Ie+ moTher persuade me To geT Them? Class Day has come and gone. IT was all righT, buT noT as much Tun as iT used To be, Tor we couIdn'T wear cosTumes and suck Iollipops, buT had To behave. Class NighT is nexT monTh and I Think ThaT I've Tound someone To Take To Class NighT and To The Prom. His name is Ted. l Ie's Tall lsix TeeTl, dark and nice looking, noT handsome buT nice looking. I'Ie's a Junior aT ST. John's UniversiTy, and I'm going To ask him The nighT he comes To Lane To see Three Cornered Moon. DECEMBER:- Class NighT was swell, and Ted liked iT an awTuI IoT. I was glad ThaT I had asked him. He looked so nice, and I was so proud of him. We didn'T go ouT very oTTen during ChrisTmas vacaTion as Ted's saving Tor The Prom. MoTher has boughT me a cloudlike blue neT dress. IT's lovely. Ted's going To wear a Tux, and his TaTher is IeTTing him have The car Tor ThaT nighT. The way we're planning iT, we should have a perTecTIy marvelous Time. The Prom is aImosT here, and aTTer ThaT comes RegenTs week, and Then, why Then, There's GraduaTion, and I won'T be going To Lane anymore. Gee, I'II miss iT, and everyThing ThaT goes wiTh iT. JANUARY:- The Prom was marvelous. My gown TiTTed beauTiTuIIy, and AunT Fran lenT me her new Tur iackeT. Ted looked posiTiveIy like a Greek God, and MoTher said ThaT we looked simply eleganT TogeTher. When we sTepped inTo The gym, I couIdn'T quiTe recognize iT as The place where we so duTiTuIIy and uninspiringly had done our seTTing I6
