FOREWORD Once again graduaTion has come: once more Franklin K. Lane has waTched her Seniors pass Through her porTals inTo The world. We, The GraduaTion Class oT January I94I, pass inTo a chaoTic world, a world oT inTernaTional anarchism, virulence. and avaricious ToTaliTarian sTaTes. We pass inTo a world ThaT is endeavoring To eTFace Trom The surface oT The earTh The democraTic way of liTe. We musT bear many responsibiliTies Tor ourselves, our counTry, and The world. We musT TighT our way To success, guide our naTion, and bring peace To The world. The TuTure of The world, noT only oT America, depends on us. Our paThs now will separaTeg some will secure iobs, oThers will go on and enhance Their learning. Regardless of The choice, long hours oT hard work awaiT us. ln any evenT Thrills oT independence and ambiTion surge Through us. We see our paTh obscure and dim before us. We musT make iT clear wiTh The lighT oT knowledge and a spiriT oT confidence and assiduiTy. IT is a prodigious, arduous baTTle ThaT awaiTs us. We are inspired by The challenge, and wiTh The ideals OT Tolerance and democracy ever before us, may we aTTack This Task wiTh The TaiTh, courage, and zeal ThaT Lane has insTilled wiThin us. These will be our weapons wiTh which we shall Torge ahead and desTroy our barriers. Lane has exerTed a Tremendous inTluence on our lives. She has moulded our characTers and given us a mode of ThoughT. She shall always be parT of us, and we shall remember her. We shall always remember The dances, clubs, our close Triend- ships, and The encouragemenT and inspiraTion gained Trom our TavoriTe Teachers. When you reminisce wiTh proud swelling hearTs oT The Tun you had in Lane, open This book. IT is The enTrance To The dreams oT your Alma MaTer days. She was sTanding on The porch ready To go down and she looked as if she had iusT sTepped ouT of a book. Her lovely black hair bordered her perTecTIy TeaTured Tace and The whole picTure was Tramed in a big yellow haT To maTch The yellow gown. She was laughing when I passed-she waved To me-and she looked so happy one would have ThoughT she was The bride .... l'Iow can iT be possible ThaT on This happy occasion she should conTracT This horrible Thing ThaT Took her beauTy, Took her ioy,-Took her life .... No-Jo isn'T dead. There is someone lying There in The long whiTe gown and veil, buf iT's someone else,-someone I don'T know.
