Sports Activities In BOYS INTRAMURALS boys played in games, such as soccer, football, volleyball, and basketball against each other. The Physical Education STUDENT LEADERS assisted Mr. Riley, Mr. Petroff, Miss Smith, and Mrs. Schone. They helped these teachers in taking attendance, leading in exercises and doing various duties assigned to them. ENGLISH offers students op- portunities to learn to com- municate. English units in- clude spelling, language, liter- ature, speech and composi- tion. At Mr. Bishop ' s desk are Dave McKinnis, Becky Drew. Charlie Zurbrugg. DEVELOPMENTAL READ- ING offers seventh graders a chance to become effi- cient readers. Reading speed and comprehension skills are developed through use of novels, newspapers, and S.R.A. lab units. While Dave Hartup ' s work is being corrected by Mrs. Dick. Rick Davis, Mike Borton and Tara Eddy wait their turns. SCIENCE does not just mean leaf and insect collections. Ninth graders may take biology or special biology, which emphasizes the study of the life process. Eighth graders study na- tural science. A quarter year of gen- eral science is required of seventh graders. logy. Mr. Lange hands parts Burke, Karen Gifford, and MATH =2+2+lots of work. Seventh and eighth graders take modern math. Ninth graders can take Algebra, Fundamentals of Algebra or General Math. Fred Marquardt and Pam Dolson work with fractions in Mr. Reib ' s Math 8. SOCIAL STUDIES opens the world to Franklin students. Seventh graders study foreign history; eighth, American his- tory. Ninth graders who take citizenship become aware of the privileges and responsibili- ties of American citizenship. Kim Arnold and Jack Jarboe locating states in Mr. Ault ' s 8th grade social studies class. 47 Warming up before a physical education basketball game are Tim Moulin. Steve Goldsmith, Tom Wendling, John Junk, Rick Hunley. The Beauty of Working PHYSICAL EDUCATION builds body strength through activities like volleyball, tumb- ling, folk and square dancing, exercises and wrestling. Many students participate in varsity sports and extracurricular activities. ART covers the skills of wood blocks, ceramics, clay molds, paper art, various types of paints and drawing. Art students usually create the program covers for chorus concerts. Ninth graders may take art as an elective. Sandra Minich gets advice from Mr. Converse in Art. 48 HOME ECONOMICS — for fun, for a career — teaches cooking and sewing skills especially to ninth graders. Seventh and eighth graders also learn babysitting skills, grooming and etiquette. Mrs. Heaston (AT LEFT) is involved in teaching cooking skills at one kitch- en station. Hands and Head Together Mark Grahovac is guided by Mr. McKibben in shop. INDUSTRIAL ARTS teachers share with trie boys the basics of metal and wood working and of drafting. The proper use of tools in the art of building is also taught. TYPING (LEFT) is taken for many reasons, for example, to prepare for fu- ture secretarial jobs, for typing of college papers, for preparation of neat reports or letters. Whatever the motive, speed and accuracy are emphasized after the basic skills are mastered. Rose Bonnif turns in a typing assignment while others are completing theirs. Paul Haugan, Jeff Warner and Ted Murray demonstrated how factories create pollution. HEALTH AND SAFETY classes study pollution, drug abuse, first aid, and driver education. Chiefs — Aware of Their Worlds Kim Trammel and Miss Begun with helpers. Sheila Manus and Tammy Watson, observe art in action. While Dave McKinnis tutors Steve Hollen, several girls assist Nancy Payton with phy- sical therapy. In SPECIAL EDUCATION, students are concerned with the basic knowledge in many areas — including Engiish, math, science, art, physical skills. ACTIVITIES -rjA «i ' r ;i4sw rr ' 7th Grade Band 7th Grade Chorus Sweet Melody From Franklin CONCERT ORCHESTRA (below) and CONCERT BAND (bottom) members worked hard to increase their skills as musicians and to present concerts to parents and students. SEVENTH GRADE BAND (center, left) played at pep sessions and varsity games. EIGHTH AND NINTH GRADE CHORUS (left) practiced to perform at concerts and assemblies. SEVENTH GRADE CHORUS members are working toward being members of the ad- vanced chorus group. Concert Orchestra Concert Band 53 ADVANCED GYMNASTS worked hard to participate in meets.
