SCIENCE and MATHEMATICS are two areas of study every Franklin student in all three grades encounters. Ninth graders may take biology or general science. Biology emphasizes study of the life process through lec- tures and experiments. General science, taken by ninth and eighth, encompasses the study of natural science. Seventh graders take a quarter year of general science. Algebra or general mathematics is taken by ninth graders. In algebra, students analyze equations. General mathematics broadens fundamentals previously learned. Eighth and seventh graders take modern math; some seventh graders take traditional math. v xo C,0V o f. . Holding parts of an eye did not seem to annoy John Bollinger or Vicki Cattin, in Mr. Overmyer ' s ninth-grade biology class. Corelli Hughes, Krnie Federspiel, and Mr. Ginder work together on the tough problems in seventh grade. : A s. fr o r. •r «% Terry Smith works out during physical education while Tom Smead (left) and Malcolm Jackson (right) supervise. Robin Cotham, Dan Grone, and Dennis Bridgewater kept busy during Mr. Converse ' s seventh-grade art class. ART is a required subject for seventh and eighth graders. Art is an elective for ninth graders. Students learn to make pottery, paint, block print, and learn paper a rt. Art students often decorate bulletin boards and make advertising posters. At right, Mr. Lambert ' s homeroom 112 won a trophy during Student Council Spirit Week. Several home- rooms did good jobs making posters to boost school spirit but homeroom 112 excelled. Bob Busian, Student Coun- cil president, awarded the trophy during a pep assembly. PHYSICAL EDUCATION is taken by all Franklin students. Strong bodies are built through activities, such as, tumbling, exercises, folk dancing, volleyball, basketball, and wres- tling. Many students also participated in extra- curricular sports programs, such as, G.A.A., in- tramurals, and Tumbling Club. A sense of sportsmanship is developed through the re- quired classes and elected activities. In one unit of English, Mrs. Wiggs, Jim Carboni, Chris McHenry, and George Serres and the class discussed Charles Dickens and his works. English or French and Sometimes Kent tools Ferguson and Connie Zakrajsek used books, machines and maps as growth in Developmental Reading. Miss Minsel guided them. All seventh graders took DEVELOP- MENTAL READING, an opportunity to become a more efficient reader. Read- ing skills were developed by use of the S.R.A., newspaper studies, and book reading. Students worked to increase their reading speed and to improve their comprehension ability. Efficient reading helped students in subjects such as social studies. SOCIAL STUDIES makes Franklin students aware of community civics, the historical development of the United States, the geography of foreign coun- tries. Some ninth graders studied the practical privileges and responsibilities of being an American citizen. Eighth graders studied American history, such as, early colonies, the Revolution, and the Depression. Seventh graders stud- ied land formation, locations of coun- tries, and customs of foreign people. ENGLISH is a required subject for junior high grades. Language, spell- ing, literature, and speech are units of learning one experiences in Eng- lish. All of these skills taught students how to communicate more effectively in their worlds SPANISH, FRENCH, and LATIN are foreign language electives for ninth graders. They learn the gram- mar of a language. Films, filmstrips, records, skits, and periodical litera- ture are used to facilitate learning. The customs of the people who speak the foreign language are also studied. — It ' s Language Makes History In Mrs. Hess ' French class, Cathy Cowan, Denise Hall, and Larry Hill assemble the Eiffel Tower. Citizenship, a ninth-grade class taught by Mrs. Potter, discussed the asset of being an American. Industrial Arts is a required subject for seventh and eighth grade boys — an elective subject for ninth-grade boys. The students learn the basics of draft- ing and of wood and metal working. The art of building and the proper use of tools and machinery is also learned. Mr. Krueckeburg, Mr. Mitschelen, and Mr. Lambert are industrial arts teachers. At left, Mr. Krueckeburg discusses work plans with (l.-r.) Larry Martin, Steve Heim, Ed Markowski, and Monty Patrick. Varied Skills of Future Value Are Taught The Audio-Visual room is the home base for not only a club but also for a vital service organization. From here, students supply classrooms with the A- V equipment requested for the school day. John Davis, pictured, is getting one order ready for delivery. Mr. Weaver is the A-V specialist. Home economics — a class, a career. Home economics is an elective course for ninth grade girls; a required course for seventh and eighth-grade girls. Students learn the basics of sewing and cooking. Units are also taught in grooming, man- ners, child care, and human relationships. didcwitic Y-Teens Gymnastics Post, Kite ' N ' Key Extracurricular Chiefs Fun — Wow! Sandy Walker, Peggy Moore, Tobe Partridge alphabetized, created lay-outs for, and typed the student section of the yearbook. These three students also wrote and typed copy for other year- book sections. Others who wrote copy were Ken Rarick, Jenni- fer Jones, Mark Golf, and members of the KITE ' N ' KEY club, which met on Tuesdays. Steve Ryan drew most of the artwork for the yearbook. The KITE ' N ' KEY staff was spon- sored by Mrs. Shoemaker. Kite ' n Key Constantly Met During October 1970, KITE ' N KEYS were sold. Each homeroom selected a salesman and an alternate to help with this sale. The salesmen were responsible for making out receipts, col- lecting money, balancing money with receipts, and turning these receipts in to KITE ' N ' KEY editors. Some of these responsible agents are pictured on the left. Page editors were responsible for compiling a list of potential news stories and assigning stories to writers. The editors, with the help of the publications class and publications club, typed and proofread the stories before sending them to the press. Galleys, stories set in type and proofs of pictures, were then returned to the editors who pasted them up and sent them to the printer for the actual newspaper printing. The TYPING CLUB (right) met on Thursdays to learn and to improve various skills of typing: location of letters on the keyboard, spacing, and how to set the margins.
