On February 6, 1939, the first Scholarship Meeting of the year was held in Room 212. Marguerite Secord, the new President, presided. With quivering knees and palpatating hearts, the new Junior Civic League appeared before the Student Body and presented their plans for the semester, in the Installation Assembly on February 7, 1939. On February 10, 1939, a very touching assembly was held in commemoration of Abraham Lincoln. Teachers and some stu- dents unashamedly wept. On February 16, the first Cabinet meeting of the semester was held in Room 122. Our newly-elected President, Bill R. Smith, presided in a very dignified fashion. February 21 and 22. ffThe Devills Stone? An amusing, but terrifying mystery play was presented by Miss Walkerls speech classes. In case you are still wondering what happened to the dignified girls on this date tFebruary 2+, 1939ieit was the initiation of the new members of the Officials and Coaches Club. On February 27, 1939, three of our most brilliant students won high honors in the Americanism Essay contest. They were Laura Paull, Albert Fish and Donald Fellows. On March 2, 1939, an interesting and educational motion picture, ffBoulder Dam? was shown to the Student Body. A J.C.L. Representative Meeting was held in Room 122, on March 9, 1939. Heated discussion was carried on about the current affairs of our school. On March 10, 1939, Mr. Dick Moores, a commercial cartoon- ist, appeared at Franklin Hall and gave an interesting talk on the life of a cartoonist. He also sketched his comic strip for our Art Department. Our healthy girls attended their first Honor Health Club Meeting on March 13, 1939. There are whispered rumors that they plan to furnish our patio. We were thrilled beyond words todayeMarch 17, 1939. We used our new movie equipment for the first time. The picture was uThe History of the Motion Pictures? showing all the movies from the ffPlease remove your hatll days up to the present age. Mr..Walton delivered a lecture on March 4, 1939, called Smolung, a Bad Habit. He illustrated his lecture by several experiments. nThe Ramparts We Watchfl Mr. Corey, head of the Board of Public Relations of the California State Teachers Associa- tion, delivered a challenging lecture on patriotism. The Scholar- Sl'llp Society sponsored this assembly, March 2+, 1939. On March 28 and 29, 1939, a hilarious comedy, ffElmer, was presented by Miss Walker, Inc. April 3, 1939, Easter Vacation tsigh of relaxation in behalf of the Student Bodyi. Saved by a weekls vacation, just before we all had nervous breakdowns. Miss Fullwood gave a fascinating talk on her trip to England and Scotland at the Scholarship Meeting, April 11, 1939. Qn the same day, for once seriously thinking, the 9Ays can't tlectde what should be their major in their next school. Shall it be Phys: Ed. or ditching? Dr. Adams talked to future Poly1tes whlle Mr. Mangold spoke to prospective VVilsonites. Franklin art students score again! The Junior Chamber of Commerce gave certificates of Merit to the winning safety poster Art students, on April 14, 1939. 9 L ,, a Sunday afternoon, April 15, 1939, Miss Burns and her ffPer- feet Tributely cast presented a very impressive program before the Lincoln Club. The poverty of the victims of the Mississippi Riverls floods was clearly shown to the Student Body in the motion picture, HThe River? presented on April 20, 1939. Back to School Night, April 25, 1939. Poppa, Mamma, and teacher conversed in low tones. Next morning, the result of that conversation $ Welre proud, pleased, and puffed with pride. over our new patio furnishings, April 25, 1939. Thank you, Honor Health Club!!! Brawny muscles, broad shoulders, and a deep, pleasant voice. The Physical Education Department sponsored an assembly on May 1, 1939. Captain Roy Miller was the honored speaker. We hope the girls worft take any unnecessary chances while in swimming. The musical members of the Achievement Society gave an interesting program for the organization on the third day of May. Flashes of color, Spangled costumes, and dancing feet, marked the date of our Mexican FiestaeffEl ,Cinco de Mayou ffifth day of Mayi. What H0! Who goes there? We hear the rustle of skirts and slow measured steps keeping time to the music. We see a train of beautiful girls, parading up the aisle. Trumpeters announce the royal party and a lovely girl is crowned our Queen. Youlve already guessed it; this brilliant pagentry occured May 10, 1939, at our May Fete. fth! Mrs. Townsend? Where have I heard that before? Oh yes, it was a comedy given by Miss Walkerls speech classes on May 23 and 24, 1939. Franklinls Art Department was very proud of Wanda Roberts. Her poster, nStopeSave a Life, was exhibited on all Lang Busses on March 23, 1939. How some of us students envy these talented art people; they are always in the spotlight. We were honored on May 26, 1939, for it was perhaps the biggest day in the year for Franklin Junior High School. In a beautiful ceremony, the Womenls Auxiliary of the Foreign Legion presented the American Hag to our school; and at the same assembly a new banner was given as a gift to Franklin from the Parent-Teachers Association. They came and got it on May 25, 1939. All the Official and Coach Club members got ham and eggSeif they got up 1n time for the breakfast they had in the patio. Scholarship Society held their semester Banquet, May 26, 1939, at the Robinson Hotel. Because of the food and program we all feel that this was the best Scholarship Banquet ever held. Depression is still with us. This time, we catch a glimpse of it at Franklin, June 1, 1939. It is the Achievement Socxetyls Hard Time Party. Fun was had by all on June 2, 1939-Franklinls first Fathersy and Sons' Banquet. Reason? Why it was the first real VlSlt the boys and dads had had for a long time. I couldn't think of anything for the Nomination Assembly. On June 15, 1939, the P.-T. A. gave the departing 9Als a lovely party at Franklin School. With stiHed sobs for is to crys 0f joyM the graduates turned their backs on the school, never again to be called Franklinites. Hurray! !! June 15 is the last day of school. We thought we were happy, but look at the teachers!
