uaker Spirit It is within us-Qznzkvr Sjririf, Here, within us. Values of love, companionship, and freedom- And democracyg loyalties to our school, our beliefs, our dreams, A feeling of accomplishment- It is within us--this Q1llIkl'l' Sjzirif. As We walk the halls and climb the stairs We realize the impact of its driveg For it is more than you or I, the individual, More than the glamor of footlights or the football held, Rather, it is the union of many views and hopes And pride of what we have within LlSlQllt1l1l'l' Sflirif. lt is but an instant of time since We built our school on old Ben's idealsg We have lived and learned and had faith in his words of democracy- Ifor he was there when our fathers first put it in words. And now we use his principles in realizing youth's ambitions, In achieving a spirit of greatness, For it's not in us that we are great But in those who think so-- All this is Quaker Spirit. Preseverance and courage help meet the challenge of life and life's ambitions And a complete understanding of the challenge And of the drive within us Make it worthwhile - this Qllllkfl' Sjiiril. Loyalty to ourselves and to our school Cannot be taught in lecture halls or learned from books, But from others who have gone before: lt is an enthusiastic devotion Projected by those who feel it Given to those who follow, It is proud we are to be ii fragment Of four years of this ardor: Acknowledge and respect it Encourage and most of all To feel it within Reflect it- For lt is within us-this Qnaferr Sjlirif. ic.iLORIl:'I l'.'X M.ANI ss

'l'0l0 THIS is the fortieth anniversary of Tolo. Our school, named for a pioneer American statesman, was opened in September, 1906, in what is now Washington Junior High. Until the present building was erected and the name transferred to it, Franklin was a two- year high school, whose pupils finished at Broadway for Washing- ton High School as it was then calledj. The new school early showed its independence by selecting its own colors-green and black-and by starting its own paper, for which the Indian name Tolo was selected. The Hrst number of the new publication ,was issued in October, 1909. It was published as a monthly magazine. When the high school moved into the present building and became a four-year high school, the final monthly or senior number was expanded into an annual. From 1913 until 1919, Tolo existed as both a monthly and an annual. On September 30, the first Tolo Weekly was published, since then the annual and the weekly have continued as companion publications. What does Tolo mean? For an explanation of its significance we are indebted to Ronald Todd, Curator of the Pacific Northwest Collection of the University of Washington Library: According to Edward Harpers Thomas' Chinook: A History and Dictionary of Ihr' Nartlazvr-st Cons! Trade jargon the word tulo is of Kalapuya origin and means 'to earn, to gain, to win, prevail, control, convince, overcome, subdue, subject, defeat, triumph, manage, succeed, Examples: Kumib dollu nika lolo spose niku mumook? How many dollars will I earn if I work? Wawa pe tolo, to persuade. Nika tolo yaka: I prevailed over him, I beat him, won over him. TOTEM POLE COVER DESIGN FOR THIS ISSUE BY KEITH AMES
