QQ During the years I've been in advertising art I've come to recognize how valuable it is to get proper instruction from the very beginning. 'l'0l0 THIS is the fortieth anniversary of Tolo. Our school, named for a pioneer American statesman, was opened in September, 1906, in what is now Washington Junior High. Until the present building was erected and the name transferred to it, Franklin was a two- year high school, whose pupils finished at Broadway for Washing- ton High School as it was then calledj. The new school early showed its independence by selecting its own colors-green and black-and by starting its own paper, for which the Indian name Tolo was selected. The Hrst number of the new publication ,was issued in October, 1909. It was published as a monthly magazine. When the high school moved into the present building and became a four-year high school, the final monthly or senior number was expanded into an annual. From 1913 until 1919, Tolo existed as both a monthly and an annual. On September 30, the first Tolo Weekly was published, since then the annual and the weekly have continued as companion publications. What does Tolo mean? For an explanation of its significance we are indebted to Ronald Todd, Curator of the Pacific Northwest Collection of the University of Washington Library: According to Edward Harpers Thomas' Chinook: A History and Dictionary of Ihr' Nartlazvr-st Cons! Trade jargon the word tulo is of Kalapuya origin and means 'to earn, to gain, to win, prevail, control, convince, overcome, subdue, subject, defeat, triumph, manage, succeed, Examples: Kumib dollu nika lolo spose niku mumook? How many dollars will I earn if I work? Wawa pe tolo, to persuade. Nika tolo yaka: I prevailed over him, I beat him, won over him. TOTEM POLE COVER DESIGN FOR THIS ISSUE BY KEITH AMES
