Malay Siaies, Siamj fPbi1ipj1i11a'x, I11151111, China, l'IlIlUllillllI, Fijian, uml Sanlwlu lxlundxj The days when Kublai Khan's hordes swept across Asia, and Marco Polo ventured out of the West into ancient China saw the birth of the great era during which the East and the West drew closer together. Today., however, we are at the threshold of the most momentous epoch in all history -A-THE ATOMIC AGE-YEAR THREE. We in the Pacific Northwest look out to far horizons, to islands and continents peo- pled by half of the world's population- to islands and continents forming an untapped reservoir of wealth out of which can come, if we will it, a better way of life for all men. If we will it-that means the courage and wisdom to control Atomic Energy and use it to develop the earth,s resources, to raise the technological 'level of all countries, to conquer disease. If we will it-that means active sympathy and understanding for all people every- where. On our Pacific Horizon are people, like ourselves, caught in the confusion and chaos accompanying the influx of new ideas, of new patterns of living. We who have achieved freedom through bitter struggle must recognize these people as brothers bravely striving toward the same goal. Great new leaders will come out of Asia. Wealth, prosperity, and American know how are not enough to inspire them. To make FREE- DOM and DEMOCRACY live, each one of us must carry the flaming torch of Idealism. . . . Believe in the basic goodness of men .... Determine to' build for Peace and Security through NVorld Crganization and a richer, more abundant way of life for all men .... Batter down, through education, communication, and the free exchange of ideas, the existing barriers of Ignorance, Fear, and Hatred. If we will it-Yes, we can realize a glorious Era of Prosperity, Peace, and Spiritual Awakening, not alone for ourselves, but for our neighbors on the PACIFIC HORIZON.
