UUH VIUEJW HCIPHL The Art Department is to be com- mended on its original work and in- terpretation of the Pacific Area in this year,s Annual. The Pacific Northwest has always had an active part in the development of our na- tional culture but only recently has the full significance of its strategic role in international affairs been brought so directly to our attention. From a hinterland of opportunity and frontier development it has rap- idly emerged into a section of first line importance in all our national relationships wich the countries across the Pacific. Our young people are now faced with the necessity of understanding more thoroughly than ever before the ideologies, aspirations and general thinking of the people who live on the other side. This deeper understanding will undoubt- edly be gradual at first, but if it is developed thoroughly it will be the instrument through which our many differences of opinion can be settled in a friendly way.
