UUH VIUEJW HCIPHL The Art Department is to be com- mended on its original work and in- terpretation of the Pacific Area in this year,s Annual. The Pacific Northwest has always had an active part in the development of our na- tional culture but only recently has the full significance of its strategic role in international affairs been brought so directly to our attention. From a hinterland of opportunity and frontier development it has rap- idly emerged into a section of first line importance in all our national relationships wich the countries across the Pacific. Our young people are now faced with the necessity of understanding more thoroughly than ever before the ideologies, aspirations and general thinking of the people who live on the other side. This deeper understanding will undoubt- edly be gradual at first, but if it is developed thoroughly it will be the instrument through which our many differences of opinion can be settled in a friendly way. UUH PHIHCIPHL SPEHHS Seattle is rapidly approaching world stature. Here we are, the American city, nearest the teeming millions of the Orient. Our location throws us directly into the paths of conflicting world activities. Ideas and world influence are shifting from the east to our western shores. The po- tentially powerful nations of the world border on the Pacific. Have you ever seen a Seattle sun-- rise? The rugged mountainous hori- zon describes a beauty and bigness that is tremendous. It foretells the greatness of communications and trade relations about to come. l Trained minds and courageous lead- ership will be required to meet the challenge. We at Franklin have the new lookfj Ours is a cosmopolitan school where the descendants of many races attend. Our spacious halls and class rooms teach us that no race has a corner on courtesy, courage, valor, and the things that are good. Situated as we are we get a world understanding and a first glimpse of Pacific Horizons. XVALTER J. RESEBURG
