LANGUAGE ARTS All literature teachers are book-lovers and many are book collectors, but our language arts teachers have many interests besides. A RUTH A. BAILEY is a cook at heart. She formerly taught foreign languages and has travelled in Europe, Hawaii, Alaska, and all the national parks of the West, Her pet peeve is checking papers. A Camping and tramping appeal to LUCY R. BARNES when she is not following scholarly pursuits or keeping up with current history and literature. She, too, likes to cook and to travel by car or by boat. A ROBERT J. HANDY is manager of the Seattle Teachers' Credit Union. Among his varied interests are his woodworking shop, his summer home on Vashon Island, boats and cruising on the Sound, target shooting, and Coast Guard activities. A LILA A. HUNTER says she does not have time for a hobby with housekeeping and a puppy to keep her busy: but she spends much time working for beneficial school legislation. A Although JESSE R. HURLEY'S chief interests are his two young daughters, he collects and sings, to his own piano accompaniment, songs that are different, and is an amateur chef, specializing in unusual dishes. A NAN T. JARDINE is an amateur movie photographer, with color pictures her specialty. She has made three trips to Hawaii and hopes to go there again. A HELMA E. KUEHN'S main interests are her home and garden. Reading is her favorite pastime. A LYDIA LINDBERG likes to travel by auto, to play bridge, to cook and entertain friends, to play golf and knit. She also likes to listen to war commentators. A ARISTELLE MAC- DONALD spent last summer as stage manager of the Repertory Theater, her ambition is to be a professional director. She writes sketches and plays the piano. Badminton and swimming are her favorite sports. A DOR- OTHY PERCIVAL'S pride and joy are her springer spaniel and black Persian cat. A lover of the North- west, she is content to stay here but aspires to a place in the commercial world. Pet peeve: people who Hy false colors. A LOUISE J. STRONG has no real hobbies but she enjoys listening to comedy programs and news Hashes. A EDITH VAN KLEECK likes books, music, children, horses and rain on the roof. House- keeping occupies much of her time. Her ambition is to sleep late on dark, rainy mornings. GEORGE B. JACKSON has travelled extensively both at home and abroad studying political and foreign affairs. He likes to garden and raises both flowers and vegetables. He is a lover of both art and music. A EDITH PAGE BENNETT is also a gardener and world traveler, although traveling at home and abroad rates first with her, she says she Finds gardening less expensive as a hobby. A MARGUERITE DU VAL has many hobbies including reading and gardening. Her favorite pastime is taking long walks, especially in windy weather. A AGNES QUIGLEY loves the out-of-doors and is a mountain climber, having ascended Mt. Rainier and Mt. Adams. Like other foreign language teachers, she has traveled aboard, especially in Spain, Mexico, and South America.

TRATHEN, whose chief interests are music and gardening, has heard about twenty-four of the nation's foremost musicians, He also likes good movies. His pet peeve is the ten o'clock scholar or tardy student. A WALTER RESEBURG'S hobby is Franklin athletics and his great pleasure is seeing a boy give all he has in any struggle. His pet peeve is students with run-away legs -who run out on their obliga- tions. A GWEN HOSKING worked in the library for two and a half years before working in the ofhce as secretary. Her interests are photography, books, and sewing. Her secret ambition is to play the piano. A MARY HERMAN has been working in the office since graduation last June and her interests are books. skiing, collecting souvenirs, and also all kinds of music. In charge of boys' and girls' club activities are RALPH KNAPP and MARGARET MCCARNEY. Both are lovers of the out-of-doors. Mr. Knapp has a four-acre farm on Vashon Island which is both enjoyable and profitable. His pet peeve is irresponsible boys, but he wouldn't change jobs for another. A MISS MCCARNEY likes to garden and hike. Her hobby is birds. She has traveled extensively, She thinks life too short to have a pet peeveg her chief desire is to do better the work she is already doing. LOIS CAUGHEY. librarian. is naturally interested in books. but motoring around the country is her chief hobby. She enjoys cooking and stamp collecting. She is a lover and student of birds. In the library she is assisted by PAT HAYTON, senior. MARY DUGAN and RUTH MITCHELL are in charge of study halls. Mrs. Dugan's interests center mainly around her two sons, eight and twelve: between keeping house and being a den-mother in Cub Scouts, her time is rather well spent. Pet peeve: students who don't sign out of study. A Mrs. Mitchell likes the outdoors and enjoys camping, fishing. and swimming. She has two sons six and eight years old. ALEX MCCOLM is building custodian. I-Ie likes to hx things at home as well as at school. He spends most of his time in his victory garden. His pet peeve is students who forget their locker keys. A LLOYD WILSON, engineer. also likes to Fix things. I-Ie is interested in all sports and his hobby is hunting wild game. sf

A LILLIAN C, FOWLER'S favorite pastime is trying out new recipes. She knits for the Red Cross. Automobile trips, the theater, and reading are among her interests. A LOLA HALL'S main interest is music. She likes to sing. She also enjoys collecting recipes, Her pet peeve is the chewing of gum during her typing classes. A MARGUERITE SORENSON. known to her friends as Maggie, likes to garden but hates weeds. Horseback riding and sawing wood are among her activities. She likes to travel and spent several months abroad. She likes moron jokes. A His friends all call DAVID A. STAEGER Doc, Like Izaak Walton, he is an ardent Fisherman. All outdoor sports attract him, including hunting and hiking. A MAE TOOMEY, new this year to Franklin, like Miss Percival of the English Department, came to us from Broadway. She is interested in outdoor sports, She likes to drive and has been across this country many times. A LELA WALTER'S favorite hobby is woodcarving, with gardening a close second. She is especially interested in books dealing with current problems andworld affairs. In her next life she would like to play the violin or cello. GERTRUDE L. RINEHART is an air-raid warden and the proud owner of a victory garden. She spends her spare time walking. traveling, and reading: she enjoys books of non-fiction, especially biography. A GENE- VIEVE WARNER'S special joy is her garden at her apartment. She likes to read historical novels and travel books. Until gas rationing her favorite winter sport was skiing. A LENA WlLSON'S chief interests are furnishing her new home and Fixing up her victory garden. She is especially interested in textiles and weaving: during her travels she has collected many samples of handweaving, blankets, and baskets. BARRIE S. RICE'S family, two boys and a baby daughter, take much of his time, His hobbies are his shop at home and gardening. He likes most sports, especially fishing. At the present time he devotes all his spare time to war work. A The bookroom. stage construction, and school air-raid precautions keep GEORGE O. SCOTT busy, but he finds time for his hobbies. stamps and golf-when it doesn't rain. His pet peeve is people who eat popcorn during a good movie. A ANTON SULAK has owned several airplanes and operated a flying school. His hobby is inventing and he has several U. S. patents. He also enjoys growing fruit trees and gardening. ll
