BENIAMIN FRANKLIN BENJAMIN FRANKLIN, born in Boston, Massachusetts, january 17, 1706, was one of America's heroes, diplomats, and statesmen. His father, intending that Benjamin become a minister, sent him to school, but he received only one year of formal education. Fortunately the boy liked nothing better than to read, and often sat up most of the night so that he could return the books which he had borrowed the day before. Thus through self-training and self-mastery, Ben- jamin Franklin grew to greatness. At the age of 12, he became an apprentice in the printing shop of his half- brother, james. However, it wasn't long before his dissatisfaction made him run away to Philadelphia. There he obtained employment and later started a printing shop where he published The Pennsylvania Gazette, which limped along at first but finally became the leading newspaper in the colonies. It was customary for printers at that time to issue an almanac, so Franklin published one called Poor Richard's Almanac. Scattered throughout the colo- nies, it preached the gospel of thrift and frugality, enjoying great popularity for twenty-live years. In 1757 he was sent to London and spent fifteen years as agent for the colony of Pennsylvania, and it was while on this mission that his ability as a diplomat was recognized. At the time when most men retire from public life, Dr. Franklin, in 1775, began a second great career of usefulness to his country. He was in his sev- entieth year when he became a member of the Continental Congress and worked tirelessly day and night for the cause of independence. He lived to see the completion of the first year of the United States under the Constitution he had helped to formulate. THE ART UF PRINTING PRINTING is an art that dates back to the year 175 A. D., when the Chinese discovered that by carving figures and characters in wood, inking them, and applying them to paper or parchment, lasting impressions could be obtained. From that early beginning, printing has advanced to the stage where today, modern newspaper presses turn out sixty-four page newspapers at the rate of 100,000 copies an hourg and other presses print books, magazines and pamphlets at a tremendous rate of speed. Printing, it can safely be said, has made the greatest single contribution to the cause of education. During the fifteenth century, there was a revival of learning in Europe, and the desire for knowledge was widespread. The develop- ment of mechanical printing under such leaders as Johann Gutenberg and his fellow craftsmen, made possible the production of books cheaply and quickly. More people began to learn how to read, and printing came to displace hand- writing as a method of preparing books and documents to spread ideas. Today, printing is more than ever a means of educating people. To show its educational value: the daily newspapers give us news of current happenings all over the world a few hours after their occurrenceg magazines and books present a wide range of topics of educational value clearing up the mysteries of science, art, and literature. For that matter, books are the chief means of educating school children today. So before criticism is cast at the evils of the machine age, it should be remembered that the development of the printing press is one machine- invention that has worked only for the benefit of mankind.
