AN APPRECIATIUN AS A MEMBER of the Mathematics department and a friend of Miss Johnson, I wish to express my sincere regrets at her retirement from the faculty. The thoughtfulness and friendly cooperation which she evidenced to me during my :first days of teaching at Franklin have continued to be a help and inspiration throughout our association. Her many fine qualities have won the lasting respect and affection of the faculty and student body. HELEN KUEBLER. Books fostered the tyranny of the privileged few over the ignorant many. Then about 1440, Johann Gutenberg and his contemporaries, first made books available to the common man, unlocking the mys- teries of the past, disseminating knowledge and opening to man's mind, vistas of increased knowl- edge and power. The story is told that Dr. Faus- tus, a contemporary of Gutenberg's, appearing in Paris with a parcel of printed bibles to sell was seized by the authorities and accused of witchcraft. Certainly it seemed like witchcraft and some faint aura of magic still attends the production of books and newspapers. You can sense it as you watch the huge presses thundering out miles of newspaper or thousands of books that man may read and know. European development of by moveable type made millions of books for the has spread information and . infill .-'. , ki-'E -. .G -23.2 T I 0 'fees ,mi I 9 40 opinion through magazines and newspapers. It has made possible the dream of universal educationg it has maintained freedom of the press and public opinion. Printing is the basic tool in the maintenance of our democratic way of life. It is no accident of history that the mechanical reproduction of man's ideas by books and the con- sequent spread of knowledge, close- ly parallels the rise of the common man to a fuller share in his own destiny. Among these pioneers of thought, Benjamin Franklin stands out as both an original thinker, and a craftsman in the art of printing. So it is with double homage we pay tribute to this anniversary to the art of printing and Benjamin Franklin. We pay tribute to those illustrious leaders who lit the torch of greater understanding among men-to those whose facility preserving the accumulated dom of the ages makes it for us to learn-and learning on the torch to you who May you keep the Hame clear and true. THE ART UF PRINTING PRINTING is an art that dates back to the year 175 A. D., when the Chinese discovered that by carving figures and characters in wood, inking them, and applying them to paper or parchment, lasting impressions could be obtained. From that early beginning, printing has advanced to the stage where today, modern newspaper presses turn out sixty-four page newspapers at the rate of 100,000 copies an hourg and other presses print books, magazines and pamphlets at a tremendous rate of speed. Printing, it can safely be said, has made the greatest single contribution to the cause of education. During the fifteenth century, there was a revival of learning in Europe, and the desire for knowledge was widespread. The develop- ment of mechanical printing under such leaders as Johann Gutenberg and his fellow craftsmen, made possible the production of books cheaply and quickly. More people began to learn how to read, and printing came to displace hand- writing as a method of preparing books and documents to spread ideas. Today, printing is more than ever a means of educating people. To show its educational value: the daily newspapers give us news of current happenings all over the world a few hours after their occurrenceg magazines and books present a wide range of topics of educational value clearing up the mysteries of science, art, and literature. For that matter, books are the chief means of educating school children today. So before criticism is cast at the evils of the machine age, it should be remembered that the development of the printing press is one machine- invention that has worked only for the benefit of mankind. His father, intending that Benjamin become a minister, sent him to school, but he received only one year of formal education. Fortunately the boy liked nothing better than to read, and often sat up most of the night so that he could return the books which he had borrowed the day before. Thus through self-training and self-mastery, Ben- jamin Franklin grew to greatness. At the age of 12, he became an apprentice in the printing shop of his half- brother, james. However, it wasn't long before his dissatisfaction made him run away to Philadelphia. There he obtained employment and later started a printing shop where he published The Pennsylvania Gazette, which limped along at first but finally became the leading newspaper in the colonies. It was customary for printers at that time to issue an almanac, so Franklin published one called Poor Richard's Almanac. Scattered throughout the colo- nies, it preached the gospel of thrift and frugality, enjoying great popularity for twenty-live years. In 1757 he was sent to London and spent fifteen years as agent for the colony of Pennsylvania, and it was while on this mission that his ability as a diplomat was recognized. At the time when most men retire from public life, Dr. Franklin, in 1775, began a second great career of usefulness to his country. He was in his sev- entieth year when he became a member of the Continental Congress and worked tirelessly day and night for the cause of independence. He lived to see the completion of the first year of the United States under the Constitution he had helped to formulate. After a long and fruitful life, death came to Franklin in 1790, one hundred 1 and fifty years ago today. CLARA KING. -ISV 13.7 'l-, . ' -,.- fait ' . - 5. ,f y Ls .. . ' 4 ww 4 - -1 1 . Industry, integrity and brilliancy of mind marked him as a man of unusual caliber. Rising from humble circumstances and over- coming difficulties at times seemingly insurmountable he attained positions of the greatest importance to his time. Though lacking in school opportunities he became highly educated practi- cally by his own efforts. Considered one of the great scientists, statesmen and diplomats of his day, he was repeatedly called to iill many important positions, but he remained very humble through it all. Surely he is a worthy example for every young person today who is inclined to believe his lot in life is a hard one. As students of Franklin High School we do well to emulate to a large degree the Fine qualities of our school's namesake. As citizenship and service seem to stand out particularly strong in his career, can we do better today than place these same qualities well up toward the pinnacle of our own ambition for a successful life? Some had gradu- ated twenty years ago, others ten and still others less. What is he doing? When did you last hear about her? What is the news from this one and that one? And so the evening wore along with all the interest of a succession of adventure tales. Some of the news was greeted with exclamations of pride, some with expressions of disappoint- ment. He should have done better than that, Good for her, He has exceeded my expecta- tions were typical appraisals. ADMINISTRATIUN And so whenever teachers meet to reminisce, whenever alumni gather to relive their school days and revive old friendships, the real acid test of high school values is applied when one inquires of the other, What is he doing? What is she doing? While in school the criterion seems to be marks and credits. As the years roll along these are for- gotten. In their places loom measures of perform- ance in the larger school of life. Sometimes these ultimate purposes may be hid- den in the detail of subject matter. The school may be at fault in not making them unmistakably patent. Through composition, should run the thread of practical utility in the endless activities involving use of the mother tongue in speech or in writing. The manner of expression of Franklin alumni is the yardstick by which the English department is measured. How about citizenship? Has a study of history, civics, and economics yielded favorable results? Have high standards of school citizenship and school loyalty produced high standards of state citizenship and state loyalty? These, after all, are the measures of success which social studies teachers and advisers covet. How do alumni accept their obligations and privileges as homemakers? Do they succeed in Finding a vocation in which they may continu- ously progress? Do they cultivate the sciences and arts as reservoirs of intriguing diversions? Are they good neighbors? The Franklin High School trademark has been worn honorably by many generations of Franklin graduates. It is a challenge to the class of 1940. SAMUEL E. FLEMING. E Y ff' 5.5 sa x.,9'eJ.s'1F2, . 6. We moved on, the next year, to more ambitious undertakings. We bought ourselves class letters, beautifully designed in green and black. We continued the dancing lessons begun the year before, and what dancers we did become! We also demonstrated our dramatic talents by giving a Sophomore play. Eventually we became juniors and began hobnobbing with the worthy Seniors. We gave two matinee dances in their honor, and in every way assumed the dignity of upperclassmen. Three one-act plays, produced during the year, added more glory to the achievements of our class. Now, as Seniors about to undertake new tasks and to assume new responsi- bilities-some thrilling, and all successful, we hope-our officers, Hugo Seren, Jeanie Balser, jack Greenewald, Harold Lipetz and Marjorie Hasselberg, again salute and bid Godspeed to You who fill the places we once filled, And follow in the furrow that we til1ed. Almost everyone has a hobby of one sort or anotherg something they enjoy doing whenever a spare moment offers itself. Today people have more leisure time than they used to have and the need for hobbies has grown. This is a fortunate thing, for hobbies carry with them many values. The adopter, if he is seriously interested, will find himself the possessor of new knowledge- knowledge that will make him a better cctnversationalist and a more interesting companion. That is, if he is really interested. Yes, it is an essential point, for one must take a personal delight in his own accomplishments, do the work just for the pleasure of it and never reach the point where his hobby is a task. It is this thought that the class of 1941 offers you toward the development of a well-balanced, wholesome life. CLASS OF 1941.
