5nis u as 3ran Im Franklin is one of the oldest Surry County ' communities. Always there was a scliool, and several buildings have been used at the present school site. As the area developed, schools were enlarge d, teachers added, and equipment provided. In 1920, this was the school, located near the present road, and it was to be used until the large brick building, to house the elementary grades and the newly organized high school, was built. No story of the growth of Franklin School would be complete without the name of Mrs. Mag Jones. Always interested and always present, she was a beloved person to all who knew her. This group of approximately 55 students made up the entire high school in 1928, the first year of operation. There was no graduating class, but many class activities were begun with enthusiastic participation. The com¬ munity began at once to plan ways and means of securing needed equipment for the school.
