jvmRim Mavoou 1929 1959 PuSlisfied By Svm lin Alumni Association Mount Airy, Nortfi Carolina May 1, 1963 Maroon and Qrey - 1929 - 1959 In 1939, the Franklin High School Alumni Association came into being. At that time, ten classes had graduated and many other students had spent some time here. A feeling among former students was that a closer tie with our school would be of mutual interest and benefit. The first reunion was a community picnic held in the gymnasium, and the organization was set up with the election of officers. Mr. E. P. McLeod was principal at the time. Each year thereafter an enthusiastic, loyal group of Old students have had a banquet meeting. We have renewed friendships, and walked again on familiar grounds, and sat in the desks where once we worked, played, and dreamed of the future. This year of 1963 marks the 25th reunion of the alumni group. We are proud to be one of the very few such organi¬ zations among high schools in the nation. Speaking to us in 1950, the Reverend John Wesley Clay, a revered Methodist minister of Winston-Salem said, It was my privilege to be the speaker at the alumni banquet of Franklin High School, near Mount Airy last week. I was amazed to find such a flourishing and live organization of past students of this great country school. There were more than 250 at the banquet table representing graduating classes during the past twenty years. 1 congratulate Franklin High School. It has turned out a fine group of citizens, and they are proud of their Alma Mater. Good community relationships, a sense of school pride, and cooperative effort have been factors in the growth of Franklin as a school and community of high standards. The Alumni Association is proud to be part of such a community. To us, no other school will ever be as dear to our hearts as Franklin High School. To commemorate our twenty-five years of continuity as an alumni group, we felt it appropriate to gather together in this book the story of Franklin High School. This is our contribution to our school and to the Community which nurtured it.This is our way of expressing appreciation for all that Franklin has meant to her sons and daughters, scattered now over 19 states and 6 countries. 3van lin Alumni Officers - 1963 RUBY WAGONER ' 31 CECIL HILL ' 46. %twduciion 1-6 OFFICERS 1962-1963 .President FRANCES GILLESPIE ' 45.Secretary Vice-President JOE FULK ' 49.Treasurer OaSle of Contents Adveriising 96-105 Pcrsomud 7-16 Dlvcctonj of QraduAics Classes 18-92 106- m Alumni Presidents 42 Siupshots 115 2 Maroon and Qrey Staff ROBERT HOLDER Editor GLENN MACEY Business Manager RUBY WAGONER Assistant Editor LILLIAN KIRKMAN Records Director RUTH BLACKBURN Materials Editor MISS LOUISE KENDALL Adviser Dedication The Franklin Alumni Association is quite unique, and is, to its members, a great organi¬ zation and a great idea. Every such great idea must have its generating spirit, that small spark within the human mind which is so rare, but for which we are most thankful when we find it. We wish, with this dedication, to honor the one whose mind provided that spark, the one who foresaw what this organization could and would be, and the one whose hands have worked so faithfully in making it what it is today. We honor this person as a leader in the truest sense of the word. She deserves this title because she has been able to say the right word at the right time; she has been able to help us find those strengths within ourselves which we did not know existed; and above all, she has been content to let our triumphs and achieve¬ ments be our own. We honor her as a true friend to the organi¬ zation and to each of us individually. We honor her for showing us what a truly dedicated life can accomplish. As long as there is a Franklin alumnus, this friend will have the honor due to such a life. It is with glowing pride, and with deep thanksgiving, that the Franklin Alumni Associ¬ ation dedicates this twenty-fifth anniversay yearbook to LOUISE KENDALL. 3 Stiff MemSevs Cecil Hill, ' 46, Glenn Macey ' 50. Always there was a scliool, and several buildings have been used at the present school site. As the area developed, schools were enlarge d, teachers added, and equipment provided. In 1920, this was the school, located near the present road, and it was to be used until the large brick building, to house the elementary grades and the newly organized high school, was built. Here, Franklin people centered their interests around their school. First row, left to right:_, B. Caudle, C. Hollingsworth, R. Hodge, B. Mauldin, J. Patterson, J. D. Alderman, L. Ball, W. Always interested and always present, she was a beloved person to all who knew her. She gave her time and effort for others, and was never too busy to help her neighbors. 5 This group of approximately 55 students made up the entire high school in 1928, the first year of operation. There was no graduating class, but many class activities were begun with enthusiastic participation. The com¬ munity began at once to plan ways and means of securing needed equipment for the school. Student Body, 3ran lin Hiyd Scfiool, 1928 6 3ivst Principal sm£ •- - JT • EDWARD P. McLEOD Edward P. McLeod came to Surry County ' from Elon College to become principal of the new high school when it opened its doors in September 1927. His administrative ability was immediately apparent, and he was soon firmly established in the community. Mr. McLeod was a man of integrity’ and Christian character. His dignity never deserted him, but his happy smile was also ever-present. No student ever questioned his judgment or sense of fairness. Every ' teacher had his understanding and help in school affairs. Loved by everyone, respected as few men are, he spent fifteen years establishing Franklin High School, and indeed, helping the community ' to develop and grow as a desirable place to live. There is no way to measure the influence of such a man. We, as students, teachers, and community citizens, can only be grateful that we were privileged to know him, to work with him, and to feel his influence in our lives. As long as he lived, Mr. McLeod kept his interest in Franklin and his love for those who shared his years here. He was ever proud of the forward steps made here. We can only keep faith with such a man in our own devotion to the interests of our school and community ' . 7 3ran l in School Principals Mr. Gaddy was principal for the years 1942-1944. During this time, with World War 11 in progress, teachers were hard to get, students were being drafted out of the classrooms, and teaching materials were scarce. Mr. Gaddy will be remembered for his interest in students and his leadership in school activities. He directed the boys in literally digging out several classroom spaces. During this time the school took part in scrap drives, bond sales and other efforts to win the war. Mr. Broome came to Franklin in September, 1944. He had had some sixteen years experience as teacher and principal. Franklin had 200 students and 9 teachers, and was soon to begin an expansion which has never stopped. The Agricultural Shop was built and agriculture classes added. Under Mr. Broome ' s direction, many courses were begun, such as Shorthand, Bookkeeping, Chemistry, Journalism, and Spanish. A football field was laid out and the first team went into action in 1950. The new high school building was ready for occupancy in 1953. These were years filled with success in sports, academic growth, and interest in extra-curricular activities. Mr. Hiatt came to Franklin as 7th grade teacher and coach in 1935-36, moved up to high school as mathematics instructor, and in 1956-57 be¬ came principal. Dean of all coaching personnel in northwest North Carolina, his teaching of high ideals of sportsmanship and his example in clean living set him among those to be most admired. He has been and ever will be loved and respected by hundreds of boys and girls, men and women who know him as a man of the highest character. 8 These men have given their thought, time and work as members of the local school committee. They have been leaders in a continuing effort to secure for this community the best possible school facili¬ ties. Our thanks go to them for their faithful work. SCHOOL BOARD 1963 Gerald Collins ' 36, Moir Carter, Guy Sparger, Joe H. Hall, Roy Kirkman ' 39. 9 5ran in Scdool Building In September, 1927, the doors of Franklin High School were opened. It was a proud day for those who had worked long and faithfully for the realization of this dream. Through these doors came boys and girls from many homes—eager and shy, studious, gay, ambitious and con¬ tented. In this school they grew up, their lives shaped and directed. Franklin didn ' t have all the answers to their problems, but always they found understanding, help and opportunity. From these doors have gone men and women to all walks of life cariy’ing in their hearts the Franklin spirit. Established long ago and nurtured through the years, this spirit helped them learn to do a job well, to give of themselves unselfislily, and to deal fairly with others. Yes, Franklin left its imprint on the lives of hundreds of boys and girls. Years afterward, they look back with pride and joy and say, This was Franklin; this was my ' school. 10 Sarly 3ran in 3iculty Seated, left to right: Mrs. P. Hatcher Starling, Mrs. M. Dear to our hearts are memories of athletic event which took place here during our school days. Built in 1932 tlie gymnasium was one of the first in Surr County. It wasn ' t the finest building— Was it ever Qijmn3iSmm warm? . But it was the center of our lives at one time. Here we played many contests, cheered on by students and fans; here we learned valuable lessons in sportsman¬ ship and in living. Win or lose, P ' ranklin teams gave of their strength, skill and spirit to make their community proud of them. 26 A COLLECTION OF ATHLETIC TROPHIES HAVE COME FROM MANY YEARS OF SUCCESSFUL COMPETITION Long known and respected for its achievements in athletics, Franklin acquired many trophies during its 32 years of competition. In earlier days, FHS baseball teams held their own against all challengers. Such players as Jack Robertson, Wade Lawrence, Roy Kirkman, Smith Hardy and Alfred Gardner will be long remembered. Basketball held the limelight for many years. Girls who were considered top Northwest players include Kat Simmons, Jo Nichols, Lillian Badgett, Berdine Nichols, Geneva Hicks, Bobby Lou McCraw, Dot Nichols, Oneda Booker, Edith Jarrell, Annabelle Webb, and Jill Laughridge. Outstanding boys were such players as Claude Lawrence, Jock Wagoner, T. W. Estes, William Wagoner, Heywood Weddle, Edgar Draughn, C. W. Faulkner, Max Hiatt and Herman Nichols. Many track records are still held by our boys and girls. Coy Kirkman, Cecil Hill, Rawley Amburn, Roger Jones, Johnny Gwyn, and Franklin Haymore were great track competitors. For the girls, Jurmaine Golding, Georgia Gardner, Annie Chandler, and Shirley Draughn were among the best. Football was really just beginning to move ahead from its beginning in 1950, but some outstanding indi¬ viduals should be mentioned: Richard Wagoner, Tim Simpson, Russell Thomas, Kenneth Horton, Clancy Lyons, and Maylon Blackburn. When the last game of the season was played in 1959, Franklin High School closed its record books with a sense of pride in the boys and girls who represented it for 30 years. The record of the games won and lost is one that will hold its own place in athletic achievement in Northwest North Carolina. Long will be remembered the high quality of sportsmanship shown by team members as they exhibited the Old Franklin Spirit in competitive action. 27 class of 1933 First row, left to right: Ford Miller, Jesse Wagoner, Virginia Cassady, Carl Creed. They have directed activities of this group for twenty-five years. During that time they liave lived in this area and have become community leaders. The progress of this organization and of this school owes mucli to tlieir continuing efforts. 42 In 1938 it was apparent tliat more classroom space was needed. The higlr school was using the library- for liomerooms and the auditorium tor study halls. So a de¬ cision to build a six-room building for the high school was made. There were 180 students in high school with five teachers. The building was finished and classes begun in it in January, 1940. Who will ever forget our pride in our new library, spacious classrooms, the gong that hung by the stairway-even the cold north wind that hit the front doors? A new impetus was given to work, sports, and school life as we entered the war years. By this time our student body numbered 200 in high school, with 12 teachers. This building has 9 regular classrooms, a spacious all purpose room for home economics, laboratory for sciences, a large room for commercial courses, and a centrally located library with adjoining w ' orkroom. A cafeteria to seat 300 is a desirable feature. Soon after this building was occupied, a landscaping project for draining and beautifying the grounds was completed. This resulted in a beautiful lawn with shrubbery- and trees. 72 3an]i iar Vi uni’s The entrance hall of the elementary ' building extends a welcome to all who come. Flanking the office door are plaques to the memory ' of Mr. Robert Jones and Mr. Ed Patterson who served so long and efficiently as school board members. The sign is recently erected, but the view beyond it recalls many memo¬ ries of other days. The Agriculture shop was built in 1948 to take care of Agriculture class and shop work. Here Mr. Briggs began work and many projects were carried on. 73 class of 1954 First row. left to ri ht: I. Nichols, J. Flolder, S. Smith, M. Bowman, D. Beasley, P. Jones. D. Sechriest, J.Coe, M. FRIDAY A disastrous fire destroys the Elementary ' Building, On February ' 6, 1957, fire took away the original elementary ' building. About 8:00 A.M., few students were on the grounds and fortunately no one was injured. Hundreds of people gathered and watched as flames totally destroyed the building where so many had attended classes. Fire originated in the attic and had burned for some time when it was dis¬ covered. Black smoke boiled out of the upper windows for some time before flame enveloped the space below the ceilings. Mr. joe Hall, School Board Chairman, and Mr. J. C. Hiatt confer quietly as to the best plans for oper¬ ation in the immediate future. Taken from atop the Junior High Building, this shows the devastation just after the roof collapsed. 84 BRUARY 8, 1951;. 77TH YEAR—NO. 12. 1 With the front section nearly gone the back of the building continue.s to burn. This view shows the whole front wing, offices and lunchroom completelx con¬ sumed. The fire of PTbruar 6, 1957 was a blow, but after the shock passed, k’HS rallied tobuild a better and bigger school. Within days plans were put into operation to finish the school year. The Franklin spirit carried us through hard days toward a better future. Several Iiours later, the flames have died, destruction is complet e. A few students gatlier in front of tbic liigh scliool awaiting transportation. ■Mr ' tBPti iwi r ' iMf 1™ ss A New GlementSiVi) School 1957 Dedication ceremonies were held on November 14, 1957 Editorial from Mount Airy Times, February, 1957 FROM THE ASHES When Franklin Elementary School burned to the ground a couple of weeks ago, the first question asked, after it was determined that no cliildren or teachers were injured, was, What will happen now? Where will the children go? And this community answered the questions, even while the ashes were still smoking. With a spirit of cooperation to be admired throughout this entire county, offers of temporary classrooms came in from various churches not only in Franklin, but also Mount Airy. From the ashes of the old Franklin school will emerge a new, 14-room school according to a report published last week. The building is expected to be ready for occupancy by the 700-plus students by next fall. A school house fire is a terrible thing, but the splendid cooperation of the Franklin community alleviated what could have been a hardship on the children. The South is famed for its hospitality, and in the South, no one can take precedence over the fine people who inhabit the Franklin school community. Mr. J. Sam Gentry, Superin¬ tendent of Surry’ County Schools, presented the new building to the community. Mr. James C. Hiatt, Principal, accepted the building for the school. Mr. Clinton W. Moseley, our representative on Surry County Board of Education, presided and led the dedicatory service. 86 The Community Building and the Fire Department show a spirit of cooperation among Franklin citizens COMMUNm’ BUILDING The Franklin Community Building was completed in 1956 after several years of effort by the members of the Ruritan Club and the Home Demonstration Club. Serving as a meeting place for many community groups, it is a fine example of cooperation among those interested in community progress and development. FRANKLIN FIRE DEPARTMENT The Franklin Fire Department was organized in 1959. With assistance from many people this building was constructed and trucks and fire fighting equip¬ ment paid for within a few years, Tire protection provided by this department is invaluable to Franklin Community. 87 Mascots: P.
