Gordon Weisenberg, Donna Anderson, and Susan Younger lead a class discussion on African geography. COMBINED CLASSES Witha colorful chalk mural as hackground, freshman read about African geography. 25 Through a survey of world cultures, the freshman combined classes supply a groundwork for an in-depth study of American history and contemporary society in the junior and senior years. In its present position as a major world leader, the United States must gain a knowledge of the emerging nations. The combined classes stress the study of these nations, from those of South- eastAsia to those of Africa. Freshmen gain a familiarity with the geography of these regions, especially in its re- lation to world politics. They also acquire an understanding of the reli- gions, customs, and attitudes of these remote lands. In addition to this survey of world social studies, the combined classes provide the freshmen with an introduction to high school English. The study of gram- mar is extended from grade school, and two Works of literature are read. The Odyssey and Huckleberry Finn furnish the freshmen with their first major attempts at analyzing literature. Furthermore, the combined classes serve as the formal orientation grounds for the freshmen in their first year of high school.
