Practical skills for a business career or educational aids for schoolwork can be obtainedthrough the courses inthe bus- iness department. Students who are interested in receiving training for sec- retarial and office jobs, enroll in the advanced courses of shorthand and typ- ing aswell as the office practice cours- es which teach them the operation of several office machines. Students hop- ing to improve the quality of their school work take the courses in begin- ning typing and possibly briefhand. As apart of the business education de- partment, girls are given the chance to work in the school offices during their studyhalls. Inthis way, they learn the courtesy and responsibility required of them in actual employment. The school also maintains a cooperative program with Girls' Poly, in which Franklin girls may receive more tech- nical training in fields such as dental hygiene and medical filing. ART Patty Stang and Miss Boelts use looms as Well as study fabrics in weaving class. 21 Informing abasic understanding in the field of art, students become acquaint- edwiththe principles of color and de- sign through the development of their skills in drawing and painting. For the interested student, there is enjoyment and satisfaction in acquiring these basic skills to prepare for a possible career inthe field of art. The wide selection of courses includes a variety of craft Works inmetal, ceramics, textiles, and interior design. Open to persons with no previous art experience is an art understanding class., This course helps the student to understand art and appreciate its value in a modern society. Today we are surrounded by art in many new shapes and forms. The art depart- ment satisfies and develops an appreci- ation of the beauty and color not only in creative design, but also in the nat- ural world.
