My--NWN -w J Kathy Schwartz. . . Twyla Edwards and Roycella Bateman improve their typing BUSINESS EDUCATION In the business wing the thundering sound of fingers hitting keys and keys hitting paper and platen is known by all. By the evenness of the sound and the speed of it, it is easy to discern who is beginning and who has already gained command of his machine. From another area comes the sound of pens scratching on paper as students desperately try to keep up with the teacher's dictating, as they put into practice the fundamentals of shorthand which they have been learning. With the scratch of his head and a cry of exasperation, a student looks up, wondering why in the world his prob- lem in bookkeeping didn't balance. Then in another room students try to remain calm as they work to master the use of diverse business machines. These courses of typing, shorthand, bookkeeping, business machines, and briefhand, a simplified method of notetaking, are offered by the business department so that the student may adequately prepare himself for college work or learn those skills which will aid him when he enters the world of com- petition after graduation. 22

Jeff Starr practices oral interpretation for advanced speech. ENGLISH The English Department of Franklin seeks to develop in each student the ability to think for himself and to ex- press his ideas both in writing and orally. This goal is achieved through the carefully planned course of study. The students delve into the meaning of the works theyread, then write papers and have discussions in class, thereby gaining an insight into the aspects of man's philosophy as expressed in the books. This waythe students have the opporttuiityto voice their opinion, to gain experience in defending it with evidence from the text, and to become familiar with the thoughts of others. During the freshman year the students investigate the properties of la Odys- QXL in connection with their study of ancient civilizations. lnthis way they become acquainted with the thinking and literary style of the Greeks. Throughout the sophomore year a di- Versity of literature, from AEE: Q ly-o Cities to The Human Comedy, is studied. This broad background helps prepare the students for their next two ye ars. Inthe junior year, emphasis is placed on the works of American authors. While studying the development- of literature, the students have the chance to observe the growth of philos- ophy. The reading of such books as Ethan lfrgme, The ,Scarlet Letter, and The Qld-Man Egg ka provides the has-is for Hlividual study, paper writ- ing, and class discussion. The senior year parallels the preceding year except that it is now a study of English Literature and the English Lan- guage. To carry out this study the older authors, Chaucer and Shake- speare, are read along with more con- tomporary writers, such as Somerset Maugham and Graham Greene.
